Chapter 3

Matt walked down the dirt road toward his house. Damn Jeff wrecking his car and having to borrow his. Why did the mailboxes have to be a mile down the road?

“I should hitchhike. I’d get their quicker.” Matt grumbled kicking a rock out of the way.

His thoughts were still on Yonni. He hadn’t seen her in a week, and was worried. He had a couple days left before he had to go out to the RAW taping.

The unmistakable sound of a car and gravel was behind him. He sighed. “Why not try this hitchhiking thing. I still have a long walk ahead of me.” He looked down the long road, after the turn at the very end was his driveway. That was about another 15 minutes, he figured.

Matt stuck his thumb out to the cute little green trans-am that was a ways away. The windows were black so he couldn’t see in, but was quite surprised when it came to a stop beside him. The window rolled down and he gasped when he saw who sat inside.

“Hey, Matt. Need a ride?”

“Yonni! What are you doing here?”

“I was about to ask you the same question. I live on this road. What about you?”

“Yeah, so do I. After the turn.” He pointed toward it.

She nodded. “Close enough to me. Get in.” Matt got in the little car and was surprised to find it was quite roomy.

“So what are you doing walking? What happened to that nice little Viper?”

Matt made a sour face. “Jeff was in a wreck.”

“Oh no. Is he okay?”

“Oh yeah. He’s fine and dandy...enough to use my car to go down town to meet some girl!”

Yonni laughed absently. “So where are you coming back from?”

“The damn mailboxes. Why do they have to make them so far up the road?”

“I don’t know. Maybe we should complain.” They both chuckled.

They were silent for a moment watching the scenery pass.

“So how did thing’s go with Mark?”

She cringed and Matt felt a familiar anger in his stomach.

She took off her sunglasses exposing two still black eyes.

“Yonni! He did that to you over a week ago! Didn’t he?”

She nodded.

“Gosh. Yonni, you have to leave him. He might really hurt you.”

She shook her head. “No. He loves me..”

“...In his own way! Yon, don’t you think that he is dangerous in the least? I don’t think he’s safe. He might really hurt you! He could put you in the hospital! I don’t want to see that happen to you!”

“Matt you’ve known me less than two weeks and you already think you know me! I..I love him, and he loves me whether you want to believe it or not! He doesn’t mean to! I’m just insolent!”

Matt opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out.

“I know you want to protect me, but you have to believe, he is gentle sometimes, he cuddles and loves me. That is who I love and that is who loves me.”

“I’m sorry, Yon. I don’t have any right to tell you what to do. I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

She moved her hand to his lap. “I wont Matt. So, just after the turn?”

“Yeah. Do you want to come in for a cup of coffee?”

“I guess so. Mark wont be home for another 5 hours so, I can’t see there being a problem.”

“Good, this is the driveway right here on the left.”

They pulled down the driveway. It was a fair length and even driving it took them a minute to get in sight of the house.

“Oh my... what a beautiful house!”

“Yeah?” Matt said. “Looks can be deceiving. It’s nice on the outside, just wait to you get inside, gosh. And Jeff’s room is definitely one of the neatest parts of the house!”

“It can’t be that bad.”

“Well you be the judge. I try and keep it looking nice, but whenever Jeff is their he makes it look like crap.”

She smiled and parked the car. They both got out and took a deep breath.

“Oh your property is so beautiful. How many acres do you have?”

“To tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea.” He laughed and opened the door for her. “So, am I right? The house is messy, huh?”

She blushed. “Well as much as I feel like a twit when I say it. Yeah, you are right.”

He laughed. “Don’t feel bad. Everyone who comes here says it!”
