Chapter 6
“Matt? Are you home?”
“In here, Jeff!”
Jeff walked into the kitchen that lead off to the living room. He opened the fridge and grabbed the container of orange juice, drinking it right out of the bottle.
“Jeff do you have to do that?” Matt came in with a microwave dinner plate.
Jeff winced. “Dude, you must have been really desperate to eat that crap.”
“No. Just bored. How was your date?”
Jeff frowned and took his shirt off. Matt looked at him funny.
“Why did you take your shirt off?”
“Hang on...you’ll see.”
Matt sighed.
“This..” Jeff took off a piece of cloth on his right arm. “Is why.”
Along his arm were a series of deep cuts.
“Damn, Jeff! What happened?” Matt went under the counter to retrieve a first aid kit.
“Her boyfriend showed up.”
Matt hit his head on the roof of the cupboard. “Ouch! Damn it... Boyfriend?”
“Yeah, some guy named James.”
“JAMES?”
Jeff looked at him. “Yeah, why?”
“What did he look like?”
“I don’t know. Black hair, beard, mustache... about your age, I guess..”
“Hmm...did he have a tatoo?”
“Yeah. How did you know?”
“Remember those guys in the bar when we first met Yonni?”
Jeff nodded.
“Well, the guy who slapped Yonni is James. He came by today when Yon was here and started to harass her. She said he was going to say that we were fooling around. What happened with you?”
“Oh, he just broke a bottle and swung it at me.”
“WHAT!?”
“He got arrested, don’t worry! They were going to call an ambulance but I said my big strong, smart brother would take care of me!”
Matt looked at him. “You are messed in the head, boy.”
“You just figured that out?”
“Jeff! This isn’t a time for jokes! You don’t have any glass in here but it is still a deep cut. Wash
it and put this on.” He handed him a string of gauze.
“Yeah, fine.”
Matt shook his head walking into the living room he turned on the TV.
“Why is daytime TV so boring?”
“Maybe it has something to do with the fact that most people are out, oh I don’t know, LIVING!” Jeff yelled from the bathroom.
He emerged later bending his arm in a few different directions trying to loosen the muscle.
“Whatever man. I still have more of a life than you do.”
Jeff raised his eyebrow. “Right..”
“I do!” Matt said. “I go out.”
Jeff laughed.
“I do!”
The phone rung. Matt and Jeff both looked at each other.
“Just incase it is another fan, I’m not, no, I wont answer. I’m not going through that again!”
Matt laughed at the memory, Jeff sitting in the chair, hanging up, but she kept calling back. She even got him to cry.
“Don’t worry point-dexter! I am expecting a call from Yon.” He grabbed the phone ignoring the look from his immature brother.
“Hello?”
“Matt?”
“Yeah. Yonni, is that you?”
“Yeah, Matt please. Come here. I need help I...” there was pain evident in her voice.
Matt felt fear like nothing before. “Yonni, what happened!?”
“Mark. James told him a whole bunch of stuff. He said we kissed, and Mark, he...oh god Matt please. I’m no doctor but there is
something wrong with me. Please...439 Winchester Road. Hurry..” She hung up and Matt had to compose himself before he could turn around.
Jeff stood watching him, a worried expression on his face. “What up?”
Matt bit his tongue to keep from yelling. “Mark beat her up. She told me something was wrong with her, and to come quick. Just get in the car now.”
“Do you know where she lives?”
“I just got her address, 439 Winchester Road.”
“That is a 10 minute drive!”
“Not in my Viper it wont be!”
Jeff swallowed hard. “Matthew Moore Hardy, if you get me killed, I’m coming back and haunting your ass till you turn into Scrooge!”
