Chapter 8

Matt and Jeff sat in the waiting room, waiting for any news from the doctors.

A middle aged woman walked in and looked around. A nurse followed her, “Mrs. DeVanii, stay in here, the doctors will tell you how Yonni is when they come out.”

“Are you Yonni’s mother?”

The woman looked at Matt. “Yes, and who may I ask are you?”

Arrogant isn’t she, Matt thought to himself.

“I’m Jeff, and this is my brother Matt.” Jeff said. “We are friends of Yonni’s.”

The woman stared at us. “Well, if you are such good friends of her’s, could you tell me where Mark is then?”

Matt went red and Jeff had to answer. “What did the doctors tell you when they called?”

Mrs. DeVanii looked at them. “What kind of a question is that? They called and said that my daughter was in the hospital, so I came down here. No questions asked!”

“Well, then. Maybe I can add to why she is here.” Matt said looking her in the eye. If looks could kill, she’d be a goner.

“Well then, Matt...”

“Hardy.”

“Hardy.. Well then Mr. Hardy. Tell me what I don’t know.”

“Mark was the one who put her in here. He beat her up, and she called me begging me to come and get her!”

She looked at him angrily. “I don’t believe it. Mark would never touch her!”

“How often do you see your daughter, Mrs. DeVanii?”

She frowned. “What is your profession, Mr. Hardy? If you have one.”

“I am a professional wrestler.”

“Hmm, reverse Darwinism, survival of the most idiotic. Well Mr. Hardy, I am a lawyer, so I’d watch what you say to me if I were you.”

“Good thing you aren’t me.”

“Matt, chill okay?” Jeff leaned back on his brother to calm him down.

He shrugged him off and leaned forward resting his head in his hands.

“Mrs. DeVanii, Matt, Jeff?” A doctor approached. They all looked up eager to receive any news.

“Well, we found out why she was complaining about her stomach. She had some internal bleeding, but we managed to get out all the blood and sew the wound. You two are hero’s.” He said gesturing toward Matt and Jeff. “Thank God you got to her when you did. If you didn’t, I don’t know what would have happened. Oh, and whose idea was it to clean her up?”

Matt looked guilty. “That was me, I did it on impulse. Sorry if it disturbed anything.”

Mrs. DeVanii smirked, obviously happy that he may be in trouble.

“Quite the contrary, Matt. It saved us time. We didn’t have to clean her up, so we did not have to waste valuable time. Thank-you. She owes her life to both of you. You owe them a thank-you, Mrs. DeVanii. You can all go see her now. I think Mrs. DeVanii should have a while, then you two can decide who goes in. But after that I want her to rest, she’s had a hard day. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for you to go home and rest as well.”

She looked at the brothers and nodded her head as she walked past to see her daughter.

“Honey?” She asked when she entered the room closing the door behind her.

“Mom?”

“Yes, sweetie.” She moved to the edge of the bed, sitting. Yonni was cut and had stitches in her arms and one tiny cut on her cheek.

“How are you feeling?”

She smiled rawly, ignoring the pain from her split lip. “Better.” she sighed.

“Where is Mark?”

“He isn’t here. If he comes here, he will be arrested.”

“Why?”

“You don’t know?”

“For heavens sake, child! If I knew do you think I would be asking?”

Yonni nodded. “He beat me up. That is why I am in her. Matt and Jeff saved me. The doctor said if they hadn’t come I’d be dead. I owe them my life.”

“Nonsense, Mark loves you and when he comes, he will come, you are going to thank him for coming.”

Yonni looked at her mother. Anger was setting in, and she realized Matt had been right the whole time. She should have left Mark. He was dangerous, and now her mother. Her very own mother, wanted her to thank him for coming after he almost killed her! This was too much.

“No, I wont.”

“What? But why?”

“He doesn’t love me! If he did he wouldn’t hit me! He wouldn’t have tried to kill me, and he wouldn’t have believed James when he said I was messing around on him with Matt! I...I love Matt! And I don’t care if Matt doesn’t feel the same. He is the most wonderful person I have ever met, and he would never hit me or hurt me!”

Mrs. DeVanii stared at he daughter in shock. “Listen, you deserve a man who is going to be there for you all the time! Matt won’t do that for you! He is a wrestler! Aren’t they on the road all the time?! He would never be there for you!”

“I don’t care! We could make it work! You want me to stay with a man who is going to kill me?!”

“Mark wont try and kill you! He loves you!”

“BULLSHIT!” She screamed. “I am staying with Matt! He cares about what happens to me!”

Her mother frowned. “Alright, stay with him. But, if you stay with him, I wont ever talk to you again! But if you stay with Mark, I will come by every weekend to see you!”

Yonni stared in shock. “That..That’s not fair!”

“Listen darlin’, Life’s not fair! All’s not fair in love and war! Deal with it! What is your choice!?”

Tears were sliding down her face. She couldn’t go back to that abusive monster, but she didn’t want to lose her mother. She didn’t see her that often anyway. This was the first time she’d seen her in a year.

“Matt.”

“That’s what I...what? Matt?”

“Yes, Matt. I love him, and I refuse to go back to that monster you call Mark.”

She looked at her daughter laying on that hospital bed, sad, broken and abused. “You would rather disgrace your family by staying with a man who wrestles!? You come from a nobel family of good professions! Think about your father! If you stay with him, he wont talk to you either! Mark’s parents and your father and I wanted to make sure you two stayed together to hold family ties!”

“You made us stay together so that you and daddy would be able to keep the money in Mark’s family under your wing!”

“Watch what you say to me! I’m your mother damnit!”

She swallowed. “I’m staying with Matt. I wont go back to Mark and an all around unloving family to start with.”

“You... you don’t ever speak to me again. Turn-coat...” She fixed her daughter with a deadly glare and walked from the room.

Even as a child her mother and father never paid any attention to her. The only thing they wanted her for, was to marry into a rich family, no matter how abusive, and give them money.

Long after she was gone, Yonni sat there, waiting for her to run back in and hug her saying she was sorry, just like in the movies. But in her heart she knew she wasn’t coming back.

“Yonni?”

She looked up at the door to see Matt standing there with a smile on his face. She hadn’t known him that long, but she was sure that he was who she wanted. She loved him.

“Matt...” tears were now freely falling down her face.

“Aww, Yon, don’t cry! I’m here.”

“That’s what I’m crying about.”

Matt stopped. “You don’t want me here?” he felt as if his heart were being torn out of his chest.

“No, no! I want you here. More than you’ll ever know. I...I love you Matt.”

He stood frozen to the spot. Had he heard her right. She loved him? She loved him!!

“Really?”

She laughed. “Yes, Matt. I didn’t know until now. I should have listened to you. I think I loved you since I first saw you on TV. But I didn’t know you so I just shrugged it off. But I did, Matt. I always have, I just didn’t know it. And when mom told me to choose between you, and her and Mark. I couldn’t leave you. Even for my mother. I couldn’t hurt myself like that. Forgive me for being so stupid?”

Tears were now sliding down his face too. He nodded. “Yeah, I forgive you.” He walked over to her and ever so gently kissed her lips, she pushed against him, even though it hurt her.

“You wont leave me?”

“I swear to you, I will never leave you, I will never betray you, and I will never, ever hurt you.”

For the first time in a very long time, Yonni felt safe. Oh and what a feeling it was.

(End of flashback)

“Yonni? Hello! Earth to Yonni!”

“Huh?” She said looking to the doorway of the house she saw Matt wearing a goofy grin.

“Are you ready to go? You have been up here for ten minutes since I last called. Were you thinking about your mom?”

She nodded.

“So, do you think you made a mistake?” he sounded worried about what he might hear.

She got up and went to his arms placing a single kiss on his lips that quickly grew into a slow passionate one.

“Nothing,” she pulled away from his embrace to stroke his chest. “From heaven to Earth, would make this, make us, a mistake.”
