Chapter 20

“Come on, pick up!” Jamie urged as she twisted the phone cord around her fingers.

“Hey, you’ve reached Scott Matthews, I’m not here right now, but if you leave a message, I’ll get back to you as soon as possible,” the answering machine played after the 4th ring.

“Scott!” Jamie squealed into the phone after the beep, “Pick up! I know you’re there. Come on! I gotta tell you something. It’s important!”

Jamie sighed, “Fine, give me a call whenever you get in.”

Jamie was about to hang up when she heard a beep and Scott’s voice on the other line. She quickly put the receiver back to her ear.

“Jamie, you there?” Scott asked, a little out of breath.

“Yeah,” Jamie replied, “You ok? You sound outta breath.”

“Maybe cause I had to run to pick up the phone,” Scott said with a little laugh, “what’s so important?”

“You will be introducing your parents to Danny sooner then you thought,” Jamie replied.

“You told him?” Scott exclaimed, “what’d he say? When?”

“Well,” Jamie said, recalling the whole story, “I just kind of told him when we got back to the country club. I guess my dad gave him a hard time when you and I left, and I was telling Jeff to forget about him, because I don’t care what my dad thinks, and that I love him.”

“And what’d he say?” Scott asked.

“That he loved me too,” Jamie said, a smile on her face, “and no matter what happens in our relationship, it’s worth fighting for.”

“That is so cool James,” Scott replied, “Where is Jeff now? Is he there?”

“No, he left with the WWF again, he’ll be back Wednesday afternoon, he’s taking me to dinner Wednesday night,” Jamie said, “he just left yesterday, and I miss him already!”

“I know how you feel James,” Scott agreed, “Danny and I are always somewhere else on business, and it makes those times we are together even more special. You and Jeff will learn to make the time you have together valuable.”

“Speaking of Danny…” Jamie interrupted, “When do you think you’ll tell your parents about you and him?”

“I kind of did,” Scott admitted.

“You did?” Jamie cried, “What did they say?”

“Well, I told them that I have someone special in my life,” Scott said, “We’re going out to dinner this weekend, and I’m going to introduce them to Danny.”

“That’s great!” Jamie exclaimed, “Oh, good luck. I know it’ll all work out. I’m sure they’ll love Danny!”

“You’re such an optimist, kid,” Scott laughed, “Listen, I gotta run cause I have to take care of some paperwork. I’ll give you a call later James.”

“Already, good luck if I don’t talk to you before this weekend.”

“I might need it,” Scott laughed, “later kiddo.”

“Bye,” Jamie said, hanging up the phone in it’s cradle with a small smile.

Jamie flopped down in her leather recliner next to the desk and shut her eyes, picturing Jeff’s face, and smiled. So what if she and Jeff had a few obstacles to overcome in their relationship? They weren’t as hard to overcome as Scott’s and Danny’s. Sure, her father and Jeff’s brother looked down on their relationship, but a whole society looked down on Scott and Danny’s. If Scott was so sure that a relationship with the person was worth fighting for, and even willing to break his parents’ hearts with the news that he was gay, Jamie could fight a little harder to make sure her father would accept hers and Jeff’s relationship.

Jamie was knocked out of her thoughts as the phone next to her rang. Leaning over and picking it up quickly, she looked at the caller-ID and smiled.

“Hey sweetie,” she said, picking up the phone with a smile.

“Hey,” Jeff replied with a chuckle, “how are you doing?”

“Not bad, and yourself?” Jamie asked, leaning forward in her chair and leaning on her elbows with a grin.

“I just got done with a match for a house show,” Jeff told her, “and sore as hell. But I’m ok besides that.”

“Sorry baby,” she replied, then laughed as she heard voices in the background, “who’s that?”

“Jay and Adam,” Jeff explained with a small laugh, “hold on a second.”

Jamie listened, she could tell Jeff put his hand over the mouthpiece, but she could still hear his muffled talking, and Jay’s and Adam’s.

“Would you guys please go away?” Jamie heard Jeff beg.

“What can you say to her that we can’t hear?” either Jay or Adam asked, Jamie couldn’t differentiate between the two voices.

“Just that he loves her and he can’t wait to see her again,” the other one teased.

“Shut up Jay,” Jeff said, unable to hold back a small laugh.

Jamie shook her head and laughed as she listened to the argument on the other line for a good two minutes.

“Thank you, goodbye!” she heard Jeff finally say.

“Tell her we said hey,” one of them called, then Jamie heard a door close.

“I’m back, you still there?” Jeff asked, moving his hand from the mouthpiece.

“I’m here,” she replied, “Jay and Adam?”

“Of course,” Jeff laughed, “they’re pretty annoying, but good friends none the less.”

“So, what do you have to tell me that you couldn’t say in front of them?” Jamie asked teasingly.

“Just that I miss you and I can’t wait to see you again,” Jeff laughed, “and I love you. I guess Jay was right.”

“I guess so,” Jamie giggled, “well, I miss you and can’t wait to see you again.”

“I’m gonna get going, do you want me to call you when I get back to the hotel?”

“If you want to,” Jamie replied.

“Ok, I will,” Jeff replied, “Bye beautiful.”

“Bye,” Jamie replied as she heard a click as Jeff hung up his cell phone. Jamie gently placed her phone back in its holder and smiled to herself. This relationship was definitely worth fighting for.
