Chapter 26
“I got some great shots!” Jamie announced happily, unlocking the apartment door and walking.
“Great,” Scott called from the kitchen, “James we gotta talk again.”
“Sure, what abo…” Jamie started to ask, but lost her voice in shock as she entered the small kitchen where Scott and Danny stood, her jaw dropping as she looked over towards the counter.
“Hey Jamie,” Jeff said from his seat at the counter, his face expressionless as he climbed to his feet.
“Jeff?” Jamie asked, almost not able to believe her own eyes, “what are you doing here?”
“What do you think I’m doing here?” Jeff asked, annoyance filling his voice, “I found Scott’s number and gave him a call, I wanted to see you.”
“You wanted to see me?” Jamie asked surprised.
“Yeah,” Jeff replied seriously as he walked towards her, “we need to talk
“Danny and I are gonna go out,” Scott interrupted as Jeff and Jamie looked at him quickly, “give you guys a little privacy.”
Jamie nodded as Jeff looked down at the ground without saying anything. Jeff looked up as he heard the door to the apartment shut and just himself and Jamie were left.
“Jeff, I…” Jamie started, then stopped and looked down at the floor. The two were as awkward as if two teenagers on a first date, and the tension in the room was unbearable.
“It’s great to see you,” Jamie finally managed to say, “you look great.”
“You do too,” Jeff replied, almost uncomfortably, his green eyes avoiding Jamie’s.
“Would you like the tour?” Jamie asked, not knowing what else to say.
“Sure,” Jeff shrugged, a small smile finally appearing on his beautiful face.
“The bathroom and bedroom Scott and Danny share is down there,” Jamie said pointing to a short hallway, then pointed at the living room, “and this is my living space.”
“Nice,” Jeff said softly, looking around the small living room.
“You can sit down,” Jamie offered, pointing to the couch as she stood awkwardly wringing her hands together.
“I’m ok,” Jeff replied, staying standing in front of the couch as the two once again shared an uncomfortable silence and Jeff dug his hands into his jean pockets.
“How are you liking the city?” Jeff asked.
“It’s alright,” Jamie nodded, “How’s wrestling?”
“Not too bad,” Jeff replied casually.
“I’ve missed you,” Jamie squeaked, catching Jeff off guard.
“I don’t know how to reply to that,” Jeff said honestly, walking over towards Jamie, taking her hands in his own and looking at her face.
“Say you’ve missed me too,” Jamie whispered, tears forming in her eyes as she squeezed Jeff’s hands.
“Of course I have,” Jeff replied softly, “You know I have, I… I just don’t…”
Jamie stared at Jeff as he searched for his words carefully. He let go of her hands and turned his back to her, running his hands through his colored hair. She heard him let out a groan.
“Why did you leave like that?” Jeff asked loudly, turning towards Jamie, “you just up and left.”
“I thought it’d be easier,” Jamie answered quickly.
“For who? You?” Jeff yelled.
“Do you think leaving you was easy for me?” Jamie argued.
“You sure made it look easy,” Jeff retorted.
“Well, it wasn’t! Leaving your house that night was the hardest thing I’ve ever done! Then at the photography exhibit… to have you so close, at an arm length and just have you feel so far…”
Jamie sighed as she removed her glasses and tossed them on the couch, then moved her hands to her face.
“I didn’t want to hurt you,” Jamie cried, “it’s the last thing I’d want to do would be hurt the one person I care about so much…”
“Jamie…” Jeff soothed, walking over to her and enveloping her in a hug.
Jamie couldn’t hold back a sob as Jeff held her in his arms. It seemed as if time had stopped and the three months it had been since they’d seen each other had disappeared.
“I still love you,” Jamie whispered against Jeff’s neck as he tightened her grip around her and pulled her closer.
Jeff cupped Jamie’s face in her hands, wiping away tears that had spilled onto her cheek with his thumb. His eyes burning into hers, his cold hands on her warm, tear stained face.
“I never wanted to leave you Jeff…” Jamie whispered, only to be cut off my Jeff’s thumb covering her lips.
“It’s ok,” Jeff said, a small smile appearing on his lips as he smoothed Jamie’s blonde hair softly, “I know…”
“I’m sorry…” Jamie squeaked, tears blurring her vision.
Jeff pulled Jamie into a kiss as she wrapped her arms tightly around him; her tears now on his face as their bodies melted into each other. Jamie’s body shook at the feeling of Jeff’s lips on hers again, and she knew that with Jeff was where she was meant to be.
“We’re gonna make it work this time…” Jeff whispered breaking the kiss and resting his forehead on Jamie’s as she nodded, a small smile on her face.
“We are…” she agreed quietly, her lip trembling.
“I’m not going to lose you this time Jamie,” Jeff said taking her hands and staring into her eyes with a passion Jamie had never witnessed before.
“You’re not,” Jamie said, placing small kisses on Jeff’s lips, “I’m not going anywhere this time.”
“Good,” Jeff laughed pulling her into a hug as the two laughed uncontrollably.
Jamie didn’t know why she was laughing, she just was. She couldn’t control it. She and Jeff fell onto the couch in a heap of out of control laughter, their arms still wrapped around each other tightly.
“Why are we laughing?” Jamie asked between laughs as she snuggled against Jeff’s shoulder, small laughs still escaping her lips.
“I have no idea,” Jeff laughed, resting his head on Jamie’s taking a deep breath and controlling his laughter as he heard Jamie sigh and saw her close her eyes. Jeff felt her slip her hand through his.
“I didn’t realize just how much I missed you until just then,” Jeff said after a few minutes of silence, “to have you in my arms again, your lips against mine, your breath on my face…. I love you.”
Jamie smiled and reached up softly, placing her lips against Jeff’s as the two shared a passionate kiss. Jamie’s mind raced, as did her heart, as Jeff’s lips pressed against hers.
She couldn’t believe she was in his arms again. It was like she was in a dream and she should be pinched, but didn’t even want to try in fear of waking up.
Jamie snuggled into Jeff’s arms happily as the kiss ended. His arm wrapping securely around her shoulder.
“What are you thinking about?” Jeff asked, noticing the serene expression of Jamie’s face.
“This feels like a dream. One I never want to wake up from, I’m scared to pinch myself that I’ll wake up and you won’t be here.”
Jeff smiled and quickly moved his hand to Jamie’s arm, pinching her gently and smiling as she let out a small surprised squeal.
“I’m still here,” Jeff said with a smile, “this isn’t a dream Jamie, this is real.”
“We need a picture!” Jamie exclaimed, jumping out of Jeff’s arms and dug through a hall closet.
“What are you looking for?” Jeff questioned, watching her look frantically in the small closet.
“This!” she said with a triumphant smile, pulling a Polaroid camera out and holding it up.
Jeff laughed as she placed the camera on the table across the room and pressed a few buttons. She quickly walked over to the couch and onto Jeff’s laps where he wrapped his arms around her tightly.
“Say cheese!” she cried as she smiled and cuddled into Jeff’s arms.
The flash went off, blinding both of them momentarily. Jamie quickly jumped out of Jeff’s lap and ran over to the camera, taking the picture out and blowing on it gently. She walked back to the couch, photograph in hand, and sat next to Jeff as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
“It’s starting to focus,” Jeff said with a laugh as the colors started appearing.
Jamie and Jeff watched the picture intently as it focused and became less blurry and their smiling faces appearing. Jamie let out a small giggle as the picture came into full focus.
“It’s my best work left!” Jamie exclaimed with a laugh.
“What are you gonna call it?” Jeff asked, looking at the picture, then kissing Jamie’s cheek softly.
Jamie looked at Jeff with a small smile, then studied the picture again carefully. She sighed and looked at Jeff again, a smile still on her lips.
“I think I’m gonna call this one ‘Worth It’.”
