Chapter 7

Jeff nodded at Matt as he slid into the passenger seat of Matt’s car.

“What time did you get in around?” Matt asked as he backed out of Jeff’s driveway.

“Not too late,” Jeff shrugged, “Sorry I didn’t call. I knew you wouldn’t forget to pick me up.”

“Where were you?” Amy Dumas, Jeff’s good friend and Matt’s girlfriend asked from the backseat.

“At Jamie’s,” Jeff said. He looked over at Matt and took a deep breath. He knew what was going to happen now.

“A girl he doesn’t even know,” Matt added looking back at Amy.

“Matt, let’s not do this,” Jeff pleaded, “I know plenty about her.”

“What’s her last name?” Matt questioned.

Jeff smiled sheepishly, “I forgot actually.”

Matt groaned, “How old is she?”

“Around 23, I guess,” Jeff shrugged, “I forgot to ask.”

“Do you know anything about her Jeff?” Matt asked exasperated, “Do you know anything about her family, her life?”

“Her Mom left when she was 10, she works in an advertising company, and she does photography,” Jeff said with a grin.

“That’s all you know about her?” Matt asked, “Jen told me some stuff about her. She’s a rich, little daddy’s girl Jeff. She knows that you make money, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s all she wants you for.”

“You don’t even know her!” Jeff yelled angrily.

“Neither do you!” Matt yelled back frusturated.

“I know that I care about her,” Jeff said loudly, “I know that we have a connection.”

“You’ve known her 2 days!” Matt said with an annoyed groan.

“Didn’t you know that you were meant to be with Amy when you met her?” Jeff asked pointing to Amy in the backseat.

“He’s got a point Matt,” Amy said softly from the backseat, her hand reached up and rubbed Matt’s shoulder, “Calm down sweetie.”

“Amy, don’t start,” Matt said irritated, “I don’t think this is good news. Did you sleep with her?”

“Matt!” Amy yelled, in disbelief that Matt would ask Jeff that. Amy looked over at Jeff and was surprised to see him smiling.

“No,” Jeff said, his smile not fading, “We did not sleep together. We ate dinner, talked, kissed, that’s about it.”

“I still don’t like the idea…” Matt started.

“You know what?” Jeff interrupted, unable to hide his irritation, “I appreciate you trying to protect me, but I care about Jamie. Ok? I really like her and I really care about her and I don’t care what you or anyone else thinks.”

“Fine,” Matt said, not bothering to hide his annoyance either, “Do what you want. But don’t come crying to me when you find out I was right.”

“You guys, stop!” Amy demanded from the backseat, “We’re almost to the airport. Just drop it!”

“Fine,” Jeff mumbled, looking out the window.

“Whatever,” Matt said softly, changing the radio station.

Amy sat back in her seat as the 3 rode the rest of the way to the airport in silence.
