Enchantments of Judaism: A Course for Christians and Others
The purpose of this course is to introduce the adherents of the majority religion to some of the charm and beauty to be found in Judaism.
We will spend the first meeting, on Tuesday, January 9, at 7 P.M. in 66-154, listening to contemporary and classic settings of key liturgical texts connected to Sabbath worship. We will also discuss (briefly) the structure of worship in Judaism. Recorded artists will include: Stuart Binder, Congregation Beth Chaim, Princeton, New Jersey (singing the shalom aleykhem, lekha dodi, and the khatsi kaddish),
Temple Sinai Quartet, Brookline, Massachusetts (singing the barekhu, avot, gevurot, and the oseh shalom), Lev Ba-Esh, Temple Israel, Dover,
New Hampshire (singing the avot ve-imahot), the late Shlomo Carlebach, o"h (performing the veshamru), Bruce Benson & Kenny G, (performing the oseh shalom and the aleynu), and the New York Baroque (performing Salomone Rossi's eyn keloheynu and adon olam).
The second session, on Tuesday, January 16, at 7 P.M. in 66-154, will be devoted to a textual study on the topic of sacrifice in the Hebrew Bible and in rabbinic literature. We will also listen to some recorded music for erev shabbat during the second session.
All interested persons are welcome to attend. Our focus will be beautiful music for liturgical texts.
