Providence Little Rhody

Providence Little Rhody is the first foal born at our farm. His sire is a black, Section A Welsh, Liseter Shinining Star (the same sire as Epona Du Jet Star) and his dam is a black, grade Shetland (Little Tar Baby).

The story behind Rhody's birth is somewhat amusing. It is one of our favorites, so please read on...

Rhody was due in early March (an awful time to have to do foal watch!) and I was preparing to spend a few nights sleeping in the barn. Of course it was not to be! The week before the due date, I had a terrible riding accident which resulted in one major surgery and a two week hospital stay. The whole time I was hospitalized, all I worried about was the mare. My husband and friends checked her daily, and consistently reported back to me that she had a long way to go, so I thought that maybe I would be home in time.

On the day of my surgery all I remember is being wheeled out of the operating room when my husband said "It's a boy!". Since I did not remember being pregnant, I was quite shocked! I wasn't sure at that time if it was the Morphine or maybe I had hit my head in the accident and forgotten something. Needless to say, we will never forget March 18, 1997.

Rhody is off to a great start driving this fall and will be started under saddle in the spring of 2000. He is sure to be a big hit as he grows into his role as a Providence Farm school pony.
