Wishing Upon A Star

Good and Bad

Today had its ups and downs.

Work was out of hand, due to my absence yesterday. I had too much paperwork left to clear up, too many phone calls to make, and lessons that needed to be run off. So I guess in general it was a typical day.

I managed to weed through a pile of the paperwork, but haven’t finished all of it. I still have to make sure I have copies of everything, as things seem to disappear from the central office on a regular basis.

I flew out of there at three o’clock, though.

I came home and tried to unwind a bit, knowing that I had to be in decent shape for tonight’s dress rehearsal. Friends and families are invited to see our contest package as well as a few other numbers.

I decided to wear the costume so I didn’t have to get changed there. That was a risk. Fuchsia sequins aren’t my usual driving attire. I make sure I stick to the speed limit and pray that the car doesn’t break down. I have to say that I like the costume a lot. We have a black pantsuit that we wear as the basic costume and a diagonally cut triangle of fuchsia sequins as a bib on the front. We also have sequined cuffs. It’ll look great under the stage lights.

The performance was fine from a musical standpoint. I think we sounded good, and the choreography was crisp. The emceeing, which is an absolute sore spot with me, was nothing short of horrendous. We had no idea what songs were going to be when, and neither did the audience. It was a flat out embarrassment. If the director doesn’t see that then she really has something wrong with her.

The highlight of the evening came when a former chorus member came to find me so she could tell me how great my side of the risers looked, and how wonderful our faces were. She said that the five of us that form the perimeter of the group were riveting to watch! Yeah me!

That made my night!

So now it’s eleven and I need to go to bed. I have a 7:45 parent meeting in the morning. But then I have one of those every morning this week.

Trivia: What are the states of freeway traffic flow?

Although freeway traffic flow is very complex, science is beginning to reveal its dynamics. It turns out to have distinct states, like the gas, liquid, and solid states of matter. When traffic moves like a gas, the cars are far enough apart that each one can move freely without much affecting its neighbors. Drivers instinctively maintain large separations, and traffic flows at maximum speed. When things get a little busier, cars slot together into clusters that travel only a little slower than they do in the gas state. The clusters are like condensed droplets of liquid, and they are separated by intervals of gaseous traffic. If traffic gets even heavier, another transition happens. The traffic enters a thick, viscous state like honey or tar. If it gets much heavier you have gridlock, the solid state of traffic flow.

Cool word:maudlin [adj. MAWD-luhn]

Do you know someone who is easily moved to tears? If so, you can describe them as maudlin. Anyone who is effusively sentimental is maudlin. Near synonyms include weepy, syrupy, mawkish, and mushy. Example: "Anne had a tendency to get maudlin when looking through family photo albums." Maudlin is derived from Magdalene, as in Mary Magdalene, the weeping sinner who washed Jesus' feet with her repentant tears. According to the Bible she was present at Christ's crucifixion and was the first to meet with him after he had risen from the dead. In religious paintings of the Middle Ages she was often shown with red eyes or crying. By the 16th century Magdalene had gradually eroded into maudlin which the English used to describe someone who was in a tearful drunken state. This second sense of maudlin, describing someone who has had so much to drink that they are emotionally silly or sad about life in general, remains in contemporary use.
