Manny was born into poverty. The Dominican Republic has little oppurtunity and is a very poor country. Manny's mother decided to try to make a better life for her and her children by moving to New York. Manny had a tough time in school, he was unwilling to learn english and couldn't concentrate, so because of that he was basiclly called stupid and they said that he could never amount to anything. But one day he picked up the bat and found something he could succeed at. He took all his frustrations out on the baseball which enabled him to hit exeptionally well. His high school coach noticed his talent and by the end of high school he was drafted by the Indians and was offered a minor league contract. Two years later he had his first major league game.
