Type of Conflict

The conflict of Northern Ireland vs. Southern Ireland, which today is known as “the Troubles” began in reality thirty years ago, but has roots that date back to the sixteenth century. The conflict is usually describes as religious, because it is a conflict between the Protestants and Catholics, but it truly deals little with the religions, and is focused on disagreements involving nationality and colonialism. Since 1969, over 3,225 people have been killed in armed fighting, making the Northern Ireland Conflict Europe’s second deadliest encounter since World War II.
