The Romance of the Roses Saga

The Romance of the Roses Saga

Forward

This is a story based on Revolutionary Girl Utena. The characters are all from the anime except for Airen, who is my own creation and is based on myself. This takes place after the end of the Black Rose Saga. It has a few similarities with the remainder of the series, but I will not reveal any of the anime or manga conclusions, so consider it a sort of amateur alternate ending. The Utena characters I use have certain similarities with people I know, so parts of my story come from real life. I do use certain aspects of the anime’s symbolism, and for those of you who know how the anime ended, it should be easy to spot what came from the original story. For the rest of you, if you don’t want to spoil the story, it’s better for you not to read it..

Thank you for reading my fanfic.

Part Eight

The wall of roses was alive with shadows. Three male shaped shadows stood alone on the right, their heads hanging. The three female shadows stood alone on the left, and they huddled together cupping their hands over their faces.

"Do you know? Do you know? Do you know what I saw?" asked the first girl.

"The fencing team captains was crying in the hall," sniffed the second.

"She lost something that was precious to her," the third said, clicking a stopwatch.

"If she looks hard enough, she can find it, I'm sure," said the first dresses as Sherlock Holmes, as all three looked about with magnifying glasses.

The three male shadows leaned close together.

"Do you know? Do you know? Do you know where they’ve gone?" asked the first boy.

"Those girls and the pretty boy have been absent too long, " said the second.

"They all were at school, and then disappeared," said the third, making a string of scarves disappear.

"Don’t be surprised if they’re still somewhere near," said the first, as all three leaned back to back.

Juri stood alone in the practice room. She held Miki’s sword in her hand. She didn’t want to be alive. She wanted to be dead. Maybe then she could be with him.

"Ah, but what a waste that would be," a sad voice interrupted her solitude. Juri looked up to see Airen. She wore her black and red school uniform. She held out her hand, where the stopwatch lay.

"Where did you get that?" Juri was angry, but she held herself back.

Airen laid the watch on a table and left the room. Juri stared at it, then, walking over to it, she picked it up and held it to her chest. She looked up, but Airen was gone. She left the building, heading for home. At the fountain by her dorm, she stopped to sit down. Taking out her locket, she opened it, holding it close to look into a pair of blue eyes she would never see again. Her vision blurred and tears fell.

"Miki…"

He felt like he was frozen. Miki opened his eyes. Silver roses. He was surrounded by silver roses. He pushed himself up on his elbows, looking around. It looked like the dueling arena, but there was no exit, and the sky was black. Getting to his feet, he stopped and listened. Someone was singing. He followed the sound. He came to a staircase. The voice seemed to come from that direction. He climbed to the top only to find himself at the floating castle. At the door, he saw a crouching figure. As he drew closer, he saw it was a small girl. She had short cherry red hair and was very pretty. A cute child, he thought. The girl looked up at him.

"Hello." The girl had a very sweet voice. Miki smiled.

"Hello. I’m Miki. What’s your name?" The little girl smiled.

"I don’t know. I never knew my name."

"Why are you here?"

"I’m looking for my little brother."

"Oh, is he in the castle?" The little girl stood and walked over to him.

"I don’t know. They won’t tell me."

"Who won’t tell you?" The girl did not answer.

"Why are you here, Miki?"

"I…I think I died." The girl laughed.

"No, you’re not dead."

"Do you know what this place is?" Miki was very confused. This girl looked familiar.

"It’s a place where people wait."

"Wait for what?"

"Their prince.

"Who is the prince?" He waited for her to answer, but she never did. At that moment, a man came walking to the gate.

"Akio?"

"Ah Miki. I see you’ve found a new friend." Akio looked very smug. The little girl moved closer to Miki, afraid.

"How did you get here?"

"I come and go from here as I please. I am "End of the World" after all." This was not quite a surprise for Miki as he knew this from Touga. Miki decided to ask his help, and he would not leave the girl here, it wouldn’t be right to abandon a child.

"Can you help us escape?"

"Us?"

"The girl is coming with me." Miki felt her small hand in his and he smiled down at her. Akio startled him by laughing.

"How sentimental, but its not possible."

"Why not? Miki asked.

"Because she does not exist." Miki looked down at the girl. She smiled and placed something in his hand. He looked at the small object she’d given him. It was a silver locket. He opened it and looked into a pair of aqua eyes framed by firey curls.

"Juri." When he looked up he found himself standing at a fountain. Juri looked up from where she sat. It took her a moment to realize what she saw was real. In her hand she had an open gold locket.

"…M…Miki?"

"Juri!" The water reflected their embracing forms.

"A happy reunion." Airen watched them from the trees, hidden in the shadows.
