The major theme of this book is how the migrant people overcame with the hardships they had in California. The thing that made it possible for them to get over with hard time was that "one big soul that everybody is part of." The migrant people helped each other when they were in a bad situation. They were able to bond and feel unity in them because they had the same troubles.
