Lettuce on the Lawn

It was so long ago
But I still remember,
He came over with the other
And ate McDonalds on my driveway.
He threw the lettuce on my lawn
And the sprinklers were going.
And in the morning,
The lettuce was still there.
How I wanted there to always be
Lettuce on the lawn
And even now, married and with
Children and an older woman,
Sometimes I turn on the sprinklers
And go outside, and I stand there
And I feel the grass beneath me.
I reach into my pocket and I put
Lettuce on the lawn.
And I cry, I cry for all
Those times he came over and
All those times he didn't.
For all we did and all
We ever said and
All we were going to
Make of ourselves.
And I sit down in the
Lettuce on the lawn
And I just cry.
