Samantha Jones

Samantha Jones, played by Kim Cattrall, is the most masculine character on "Sex and the City especially regarding her sexual lifestyle. In fact, Samantha refuses to be anything but masculine in her sexual life. She does not believe in monogamy. Sex to Samantha is only for physical pleasure; there is no emotional involvement. Consequently, Samantha quickly gets over one intimate relationship and quickly moves on to the next affair. And so, Samantha Jones reaps the benefits of the Second Wave Feminism which promoted the use of birth control for women so they could have more liberal sex lives.

However, Samantha also benefits from the 1970s Feminist Movement when it comes to abortion. In 1973, it was decided in the Supreme Court trial of Roe vs. Wade that most laws against abortion were violating the constitutional right to privacy; thus, abortion became legal giving women yet another freedom--the right to choose if they wanted to have a baby or not. For Samantha Jones, she chose to have two abortions thanks to Roe vs. Wade. Her career, her singlehood, and most of all her independence were more important to her than being a mother. And so, Samantha once again took advantage of the Women's Movement accomplishments by being able to choose not to be a mother.

Samantha does not only benefit from the Women's Movement in her sexual life, she also benefits from the feminist ideas in her public life. The main objective of feminism is to promote a woman's independence. Samantha Jones is nothing but independent. She is insensitive, opinionated, and most of all self-sufficient. By owning her public relations firm, Samantha is completely self-reliant and independent. As a result of her independence, Samantha is an example of what feminists throughout time have been supporting--a woman's right to independence and choice.
