SUMMARY
AIM: Impedance ratio of Ductus Arteriosus (D.A.) [Aceleration time(TA)/ ejection time (TE )] and Pulmonary Artery (PA) when considered separately, they behave in opposite fashion. We consider that the Relative Impedance Index ( DAPA TA/TE ), which varies along the normal growing pregnancy, could be used as a diagnosis test of preterm, term and postterm pregnancies.
MATERIAL & METHODS: 134 pregnant patiens were involved in this study, 52 patients carried preterm pregnancies, 65 term and 17 were postterm. Ductus Arteriosus and Pulmonary Artery blood flow velocity waveforms were investigated in all pregnancies by pulsated-wave Doppler ulrasound. The ratios (TA/TE) x 1000 of Ductus Arteriosus and Pulmonary Artery were calculated and divided to obtain the Relative Impedance Index (DAPA TA/TE ).
RESULTS : In 94% of preterm pregnancies (49/52) the values of Impedance Index were above 1,1. 87% of patiens with term gestation showed range values between 1,0 to 1,1. In the postdatism group , 100% of the cases showed values under 1,0.
CONCLUSION : Along the normal pregnancy, Ductus Arteriosus and Pulmonary Artery impedance ratio values show opposite tendency patterns. Ductus Arteriosus impedance increases toward term as Pulmonary impedance decreases. At term, the Relative Impedance Index values are close to 1,0. In postdatism patients the Impedance Index values are below 1,0. We suggest to use this value as a disgnostic criteria in the functional assesment of the gestational age.
