With the Kentucky Derby and Preakness already under his belt, Smarty Jones is creating quite a stir, as people expect to see him become the first Triple Crown champion in quite some time. With a win at the Belmont stakes, that will become a reality.
Challengers for the undefeated thoroughbred are few and far between! Yes, Smarty's competitors have been ducking him since the beginning! The Cliff's Edge has a nice excuse after "throwing a shoe" in the Kentucky Derby and sitting out Preakness with a sore foot. If you ask me, it was more like "Throwing the race" when he knew he wasn't going to win, and sitting out with some sore pride! The skittish Rock Hard Ten appears to be his toughest challenge, and they barely got him in the gate at Preakness! Some say it's because he's scared of Smarty and the Smackdown they know he can lay on the other horses. (Which seems justified... He did win by a Preakness record 11 1/2 lengths.) "But Joe," you say, "why all the horse racing talk? And where's the freakish twist that makes this a Julio article?" Well, my friend for whom I provide dialogue, here is the twist... The main man himself, Jorge "God" Julio is thinking of entering the Belmont Stakes to compete with Smarty. "It's a rare occasion when you can compete with such a dominating athlete at the top of his game," said Julio. "It's like fighting Ali in his prime, or stepping in the batter's box against me. It's an opportunity I just can't pass up." When asked about possibly wrecking the shot at a Triple Crown, Julio said "Look, the Triple Crown is a big deal... Nobody's going to lay down and give this to Smarty like Favre did for Strahan. If he beats Julio, he deserves this honor." What a sportsman! When asked what horse he'd be riding in the race, Julio was quoted as saying... "Horse? I was just gonna run really fast." Well, we know that Jorge is good, but let's see if he can keep up with the Jones. Depending upon his performance at Belmont, Julio is considering a "run" at the Indianapolis 500. More on this as it becomes available.
