HALIFAX!
Wait For This Site It is Worth it!

MY PERSONAL SPIEL: I love this city. I've lived here all my life, and hope to continue to. I have gone to school here grown up here and have become quite attached to it all. It's not too big, not too small. It has all the features of a big city, but the friendlyness and warmth of a small town. You can also walk everywhere, making for an enjoyable atmosphere. We have a busaling downtown, and a semi-conveniant bus system. It gets us around. We have dozens of world chain hotels, several B&B's, thousands of buisinesses, and thousands of retail outlets.

INTRODUCTION: The province of Nova Scotia, "Canada's ocean playground," is an eastern province of Canada, consisting of a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic and Cape Breton Island, totaling: 55,490 sq. km. (21,425 sq. mi.); and population of 1,000,000. However, the ocean is usually cold, and except for summertime, only wet suited windsurfers will venture in. Most of us prefer to watch whales (best area on the Atlantic Ocean to see them), sail (or watch the Bluenose II sail), eat lobsters, and go fishing, inland or at sea. British settlers founded Halifax in 1749. Great Britain maintained a military base there for many years because of the city's strategic location.

THE CITY OF HALIFAX: is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, and is a major sea port on the Atlantic Ocean. Halifax has five major academic institutions, a college for art and design, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, several other research centers, and a large Department of National Defence Canadian Forces Base (Shearwater). Population (Metro): 380,000 (approx). City of Halifax (Area): 79.2 sq. km.

The metropolitan area is located on the southeastern coast of Nova Scotia. The population is concentrated around Halifax Harbour, a sheltered inlet penetrating nine kilometers inland from the Atlantic coast. It is the world's second largest natural harbor and remains open through the winter months when ice closes most other eastern Canadian seaports. The port handles about 11 million metric tonnes of cargo annually.

Halifax has a special flavour romantic, cultured and captivating. Founded in 1749, it's a friendly city with tree-lined streets, parks and green spaces that invite you to explore. Modern towers of glass and steel overlook graceful historic buildings, and broad boulevards cross narrow cobbled streets where you can almost hear the historic echoes of horse-drawn carts.

Halifax's downtown area is a bustling hub of commerce, education and culture. Sidewalk cafÈs create a lively international flavour. Vibrant shopping districts have something for even the most discriminating tastes. With five universities and two colleges, Halifax is a major centre of learning. In addition, a growing number of technology companies are calling Halifax "home".

Called "The City of Trees," Halifax is known for its many lovely parks. Point Pleasant Park offers harbour views and paths for biking, jogging or just plain strolling. The Public Gardens are a colourful oasis of Victorian floral splendour in the midst of the city. Inside the massive stone walls of the Halifax Citadel - Canada's most visited National Historic Site - uniformed re-enactors dressed in the kilts and feather bonnets of the 19th century Highland regiment that once garrisoned the fort, bring to life the sights and sounds of Halifax's military history.

At the heart of Halifax's romance lies the harbour. There's a feeling of being close to the seaäthe crisp tang of salt air, the ever-changing panorama of colour and light, and the excitement of a busy port that welcomes ships from around the world.

A walk along the waterfront is a perfect way to experience the city's seaside charm. Spend a day discovering the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, or explore the Historic Properties, stone warehouses that once held privateers' captured bounty and are now home to a colourful array of shops and restaurants.
