DAMIAN DAME
THIS PAGE IS DEDICATED IN LOVING MEMORY
TO
THE MUSICAL DUO
(DAMIAN DAME) WHICH CONSISTED OF DEAH
DAME(DEBRA JEAN HURD)
AND DAMIAN (BRUCE EDWARD BROADUS).- FOR
SOULS
AND GOOD
MUSIC NEVER CEASE TO EXIST.
DAMIAN DAME Consisted of members Deah
Dame
(Debra Jean
Hurd) and Damian (Bruce Edward Broadus).
They were the
first act on the Laface/Arista record
label
in 1991. They
were famous for hits such as
"Exclusivity",
"Right Down To
It" and Gotta Learn My Rhythem".
Deah Dame was the lyricist and Damian
wrote
the music.
Damian Dame is credited for writing
their own
cuts on the
album such as "Virgin Island", "Love
Come
Near Me" and
"Believer". She chose her lyrics as
what best described her personality and
her high standard morals. Deah
particulary preferred
singing ballards
because she said that there was a strong
emotional impact
both to singer and audience when the
song was
done right.
Deah originally was going to be a solo
act
but after Damian
heard her voice on a demo tape from
another
musician he was
determined to sing with her. She was
blessed
with a
limitless vocal range. Only a year
after
they met they met in Los Angeles, they hooked
up with Laface records, and then moved to
Geogia,
formed the duo Damian Dame and put out
their
self titled
album.
Before there might have been a second
album
Deah's physical
life was taken away by a fatal automobile
collision on June 27, 1994,
She was 35 years old. She is survived by Her
parents Dr Chester, and Mrs. Hurd
sisters Carrie, Lucille, Janet, and
brother Matthew. Donations
in her
memory went to the Untited Negro College
Fund.
In
1995 Damian moved on and put out a solo
album
called
"Damian 199sex", which is on "Chip
Records
and H & H
Productions.
This album shows his own
style
and
creativity. Trust me the album is all
that and more. He dedicated the album
and a
wrote a special
song in her Deah's memory called "Guess
You
Didnt Know".
The songs on this album were still
relationship orientated
as their first album, but basically
focuses
on a sexual
theme. It's all good though- it's message is
promoting Safe Sex and a One Partner
Relationship, but you need to go by the album
to see that. It has love songs, as
well as
dance
songs, rap and 2 songs with a female called Babydoll. You can hear samples from
it by clicking my friend Tiffany's, DAMIAN
MEMORIAL PAGE at the
favorite links section at the bottom of
my page. I have made a seperate MEMORIAL PAGE FOR DEAH
there too with her work- B sure to check it out.
Unfortunately, Damian passed away on June 27,
1996
of colon
cancer, only days after his solo album was
released. Strangely enough, this is the same
day that Deah passed away, two years apart,
and they were born seven days apart. He is survived by
his mother-
Zona, Alene
Broadus, Grandmother Zona Nance , sister
Angie Broadus, son
Dominic Dixon, daughter Sky Morrow-Broadus, and
friend Carol Morrow.
PERSONAL BIO'S
Deah Dame was born Debra Jean Hurd on
September 20th, 1958 in
Houston
Texas and
raised in San Jose California. She last
resided in Atlanta Georgia. She was
5'1",
very soft
spoken, poetic, lyrically deep, quite
articulate, very
focused, professional and quite
a free spirit and a
conservative dresser. As quoted by her
father, as an infant
she was already humming out tunes. She
sang
in the choir
with her older sisters
and at the age
of 18
she toured
with her older sister and brother in-laws
band. Prior to "Damian Dame, she was no stranger to the music biz, she had a self
titled album "Debra
Hurd", on David
Geffen Records in 1983. She performed
cover
songs such as
"Gotta Broken Heart Again" by "Prince"
and
"Hug Me Squeeze
Me" by Brandon Barnes and Calvin Frost.
She
also song on
"Babyface's" album "Lovers". She sung a
duet
with him
called "Faithfull", and can be heard at
the beginning of the song "lovers". She
also has sung on albums by the group
"The Deele", "Karyn
White", Shalamar, The Jazz Crusaders- a.k.a. the Crusaders,(they had that hit that crossed over to R & B (Keep that same old feeling), also Ronnie Laws, - who is mainly Jazz, but crossed over with R & B hits, such as (Very Special), I know ya'll remember that one he sang as a duet with his sister (Debra Laws)- back in the 80's, It was a big hit. She has worked with (Perri-Pebbles Reid)- who now has
started her own christian ministry called
(Woman Of God Changing Lives Through Christ)-(if you like pebbles, you can find her ministry online. Chilli, of TLC, got her start as a dancer for Damian Dame with the "Showcase Babydolls, shoutouts to the other members Meleika, Leon, Greg and Deneen. And I believe she did some engineering/producing work on a group called "On Edge" in 1994 and maybe some music with jazz group "Pieces Of A Dream", as she hung with them.
Deah's
musical
influences
were Deniece
Williams, Teena Marie,(Teena is spiritually
deep- listen close to her lyrics-), Minnie
Ripperton (RIP)
Chaka Kahn among other artist.
Damian was born Bruce Edward Broadus on
September 13, 1966 in Marshall
Michigan. He was later raised in Battle
Creek. He last resided in Atlanta
Georgia. Damian taught himself the
piano at
the age
of nine, through a cousin who played in
gospel singer "Andre Crouch's band." He also
played the drums and guitar.( A musical genious). By
sixteen he was already
playing
in clubs in
Kalamazoo. He was in a group called "ShyBoy"
in the 80's, and had his own production company called (K-Zoo) in LA. In 1994, he produced a group called "On Edge" who had out an album called "Edge of my Bed". He was 6'1", wore a lot of
ying/yang and silver jewelry, loved doing card tricks,
and a free spirit who kept it real. . And,
boy of boy could the brother
dress, talk about style. He and Deah also
has a cut on
the soundtrack "Boomerang" called
"Reversal Of A Dog". His
musical influences
were Michael Jackson and Prince (yup-prince
is the man), Public Enemy, among
others.
Both will be greatly missed, but have
left us
with a
beautiful gift of song and a positive
message. So remember, if you dont have it
already, get the album Damian Dame, Damian
199sex 'Debra Hurd"-, "Boomerang", the other stuff they participated on and help keep their memory
alive.
