Gray City is where the story takes place. It is a town like many other towns with its rich, its poor, its super villians and bungling police. What is interesting about Gray City is how well it fits its name. Nothing in ShadowLady is black or white, but variying shades of gray. Many of the characters who people at first thought were good, upholding citizens turn out to be the foulest kind of muck. A man Aimi has a crush on turns out to be a kidnapper and a holy preist turns out to be a gold glutten, who has been cheating everyone. Shadow Lady herself, who the town looks upon as public enemy number one, is really not bad at all. As they say is SailorMoon light calls the dark as darkness calls the light.
Hecate would like to add that the architecture in Grey City also adds to the notion that nothing here is clear cut. The intricate buildings feature ornaments ranging from fearsome bug-eyed gargoyles to Italiante sun motifs. Most of the roof tops are either round or sharply pointed, indicating that life here is a mix of harsh and smooth. Another interesting thing to note is that the city is a mix of old and modern. A subtle comment on the mingling of classic story with new twist, or Hecate-the-English-Major Strikes Again? Definatly study the background art in this series!
