Hatori Sohma is the doctor of the Sohma family. He is also great friends with Shigure and Ayame, Yuki's brother. He is seen as a parent figure to the rest of the Sohma children. He cares deeply for his family members, but tries to avoid confrontation as much as possible especially with Akito or Shigure. He really cares for Tohru, and he wanted to convince her to leave the Sohma family because it might end up in tragedy for her.
Hatori is living in the past. He once had a love in his life, but which ended in tragedy for him. Partly due to the Sohma family's response to his falling in love with someone. The event made him more serious, and now he avoids people on the outside of the Sohma house and even avoids falling in love because he does not want to the same to happen to another person. This is why Tohru gets sad and tells him that she believes he is so kind of a person and that only he wanted to protect her from the Sohma family and any pain, but she upholds that she loves the Sohmas and wishes to live with Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure.
Hatori has a really complex relationship with Akito. He does not get involved with other people's problems, but he still tries to protect the others from his wrath. Hatori also still watches over Kana, his old love. Ayame said to Hatori, I want you to be more happy than Kana, two hundred times more happy because one hundred times isn't enough. And to Ayame's surprise, Hatori says that he is happy and content. One gets the feeling by listening to what Hatori says, he seems to understand the situations of everyone. If he acted on his feelings and took an active role, he might help solve alot of the problems of the Sohma people, but he does not do this because he believes its hopeless. Even then, Hatori still watches over everyone wishing well for the Sohmas held back by the curse. And perhaps, Hatori is not as hopelessly lonely as one might expect.
