STOP THE DEA'S WAR ON MEDICAL MARIJUANA PATIENTS (6/5/02)

Taking advantage of the public's focus on terrorism, the US Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA) is seizing the opportunity to wage a
series of reprehensible attacks against medical marijuana patients
and the institutions that serve them. On May 29, the DEA raided a
legitimate medical marijuana clinic in Santa Rosa, California,
forcing the clinic's 100 patients to procure marijuana in the black
market instead, and subjecting the clinic's operators to possible
federal prison sentences of five to 60 years. And last Friday, May
31, the federal government filed asset forfeiture proceedings against
the Los Angeles Cannabis Resource Center, a well-respected patients'
cooperative sanctioned by the city. Medical marijuana advocates
anticipate greatly increased DEA pressure after a June 6 court ruling
(tomorrow) that is expected to be unfavorable.
