Notes for BERNHARDT STEUER:
It was said that he was the first to take the name Steuer. It was said that the original family name was Yudkavitch, meaning son of a Jew. It was said that his wife's grandfather asked him to take on his family name since he had no sons to carry on the family name. He took on his mother-in-law's maiden name. His brothers who immigrated to the USA also took on the name, so their wouldn't be any question to their being family.

Gazelle Steuer Rosenberg had mentioned a similar story at a party ca 1930, but no one believed it.

It's believed that 6 brothers remained in Hungary. As far as they knew their descendants were wiped out or lost track of.

She was short and thin. Cemetery files were destroyed by fire. To get to the cemetery, take the BMT line and get off one stop after Grant Street.

1900 New York Census shows that she lived with her son Max in Manhattan and was the mother of 8 children, 2 still alive and that she couldn't read, write or speak English.

Notes for MAX DAVID STEUER:
Grossvardin, Austro-Hungarian Empire is now Oradea, Romania. The area of Hungary he came from was Transylvania. This was ceded to Romania after WWI, even though it's population was mostly Hungarian. It is hilly country and known for grapes and wine.

He was about 13 years old when he immigrated. He travelled in steerage. On the way over he ate butter that was rancid, got sick and never ate butter again. He and Jennie were engaged on 12 July 1891. The marriage took place at New Irving Hall on Broome St. in Lower Manhattan.

During his working life he was mostly engaged in cigar making (on a piece-work basis) and working as a clerk in a cigar store. He was also a tailor at one time. Another tome he and his wife ran a confectionery store. His wife's inheritance was down payment on a house in Ozone Park, New York.

Although he was small in stature (short and thin), all his children (some of them pretty big) were afraid of him. Max sometimes expressed doubts about G-d's existance but said that he was afraid not to believe. He lived in the USA for 72 years.

1900 Census shows some different dates for births of his children:
Minnie Nov 1893, Bernard Dec 1894, Joseph Oct 1896 and Aaron Feb 1898 (same), Sadie Aug 1899.

Notes for MARY STEUER:
She was a plump woman. Occasionally stayed with her brother and his wife their children were growing up. Adele (Steuer) thinks she remembers that her grandfather's sister (Mary) was there to help with the children because there were so many children.

According to Michael, Mary Steuer, my grandfather's sister married someone named Friedman. Michael's father was in contact with a Bob Friedman, probably Mary's son. He was a physician and visited with Michael's family during WW II when Bob was stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland. Michael remembers that Bob was wounded in the war, something to do with his lungs and in the 50's he retired somewhere in the West.

Max's middle name was anglicized into David - original name unknown. It's believed that he came to the USA with two older sisters.

Max D. had an exceptional memory and played golf. He was 26 years old when he married. He began private practice of law in 1893. He never referred to notes, but used the exact quotations he needed in citing testimony. His knowledge of the law was vast and success attended his efforts as counsel in many cases of nationwide interest. Max D. was the Chief Defense Lawyer and won the acquittal for the owners of the Triangle Shirt-Waist Factory fire in 1911. He represented Frances Hodgson Burnett and William Randolph Hearst in libel cases. He was a trustee of Beth Israel Hospital and later of the Federation for Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies. Life Magazine wrote an article on his unusual art collection in its 29 Oct 1941 issue, and later wrote a correction to the article.

Max died while on vacation at Wentworth Hall Hotel in Jackson, New Hampshire.

He was a brilliant lawyer. His office was in the American Trust Building. He also was a horrible drunk. When he was drunk, he was an awful, terrible, horrible poker player. He was addicted to gambling. His "friends" knew this and plied him with booze before his poker games. Needless to say, he lost the family "Jewels" literally! He lost much of the money that he and his wife inherited from her father. He committed suicide absolutely broke, except for some stock he left to his wife, Rebecca. This kept his daughter, Gazella, from going to college, which perhaps made her the bitter person she became.

He wasn't a bad person-only when he was drunk, and then, only on poker nights. According to his grandson, Ed Reid, "There had to be something Good about Edward, since three of the four grandsons were all named Edward." There was himself, Edward Rosenberg (Reid), R. Edward Kaplan and Edward "Buddy" Steuer.

He was in the first Law Class Graduation of Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

The census report also states that he immigrated in 1880 from Hungary and his mother tongue is German. His parents were from Hungary and spoke German. Beatrice Steuer Cohen wrote "...uncle "DB" was David. My father was Joseph and he was brought to America with the rest of the family when he was 4 yrs old. He's buried in Cleveland."

Paul Klein has Joseph's mother as Gertrude, his source: Cuyahoga County Marriage Application. He also has his date of birth to be in 1873, after June 22. Edward Steuer is older than Joseph and his mother was Widow Haupt Friedman. This could be the confusion, both women have the same maiden name of Haupt. They were sisters.

They lived in the same neighborhood, but Harry's family moved frequently depending upon whether Harry was in the money or out of it!

He worked with his father's 1st cousin, Max David Steuer in his law office, 17 John Street, for awhile. He sent his brother Harold to Law School. Later he opened his own law office. Harold came to work with him. After his first heart attack, he sold their home in Cedarhurst, Long Island and moved his family to Miami, Florida, due to his health problems. He returned to New York frequently, because he still had a law office there. His brother ran his law office for him. He died at his residence, 27th of Tevet, in Miami, FL of heart disease, at the age of 48.

He was buried in the Temple section of Graceland Memorial Park, Tamiami Trial (the street) and there is only a plaque, no tombstone.

His studies at Harvard were interrupted by Army service. Aron was secretary of Harvard Class of 1920. He was an contributor and editor on the Law Reviews in 1923. He was director of YMHA of New York, 1924-1939. Also, he was the author of "Max D. Steuer: Trial Lawyer, 1949". He wrote the "Aesop in the Courts" column, a weekly series of legal fables in the New York Law Journal from 1964 to 1979. The articles were always like fables, starting with "Once upon a time" and he signed them with just the letter "S". Judge Steuer was considered a conservative in criminal cases.

He was known for his incisive legal thinking and concise style. Columbia County Association, 1950 and New York Association since 1953. He was raised Catholic and was pretty devout up to 18 yrs or so. He's been atheist ever since. Culturally, he regards himself as being Jewish. He went to London originally to a Ph.D. at the London School of Economics. His learning was interrupted for two years by being drafted into the US Army. We he returned to LSE, he divorced his wife and was offered a job there.

Originally, he had no intention of staying in acedemic life, or in London for that matter. He thought of himself as being an economist in Washington. Temple Beth-El dedicated a magnificent tapestry entitled "Eternal Light" in the memory of Urlich and Edith Steuer. He served in the Jewish Community of Heidelberg, Germany. Urlich and Edith left Germany, along with their oldest child, for Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA in the late summer of 1938. As a farewell the organ played Handel's "Largo", which had been played at their wedding a few years before. This was just 3 months before the fires and devestation of the Kristallnacht, the famous night of "Broken Glass", from the 9th to the 10th of November 1938. He worked as a ghost writer for Dick Gregory, the African-American comedian in the late 50's and early 60's. He's the author of "Camp". His wife is a daughter of one of the Vice-Presidents of Jolues (sp?)-Marville Crop. They were on their honeymoon ca 1951, while his mother took care of the child. He developed debilitating arthritis systematically in the late 1960's. To treat the pain from the disease with medication, he moved to Tibet, and later India, joining a monastery, learning to meditate and to overcome the crippling disease. It was in 1976 that he decided that he would not pay taxes to the U.S. Government and moved to Siri Lanka and became a "monk". He abandoned his family. He felt that his mother didn't much care for him. This was confirmed by an Aunt. He tried to gain her approval to no avail. He was a better student than his brother, Howard, and he believes that he has done more with his life than he did. He & his brother were always very very close.

He used to carry his other physically into the natorium to watch him swimwhen he was in meets. He was very close with his fahter. One of his favorite people was his grandmother Rebecca Gelb Steuer. They spoke only German to his Granma Gelb, until the day she died.

He was a Naval Aviator in WWII. His permanent rank at discharge wa Lt. (Sr. grade). It's unknown as to why it went down one rank at discharge. He spent most of his 4½ yrs in the service and he liked it very much. He met his wife in Cleveland when he was home on his graduation from the Cadet Corps. He was at his second cousin's, Helen Eisenberg, house waiting for her to finish dressing, so they could go to dinner and a show when Marian (Stotter) called to talk to Helen. He answered the phone. Helen had been waiting to introduce them. They went to Marian's house first, and he and Marian had their first date the next night. They were married six weeks later in Corpus Christi, Texas.

San Francisco, California is his favorite place in the USA. His first wife's paternal uncle, Dr. J. Stotter, was a paulbearer at Dr. Ignatz Friedman's funeral (Ed's grandfather's step-brother).
