The Chilean rose hair Grammastola rosea is among the gentlest of God's creatures.Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. Still, it is an exceedingly docile species of tarantula, and among the easiest to handle. No wonder it has gained so much popularity amongst exotic pet owners. I've even allowed little children to hold my rose hair specimens, on occasion. I wouldn't normally allow that, due to the risk of harm to my beloved pets, but I have allowed some exceptionally calm children to hold them on occasion. |

It's worth remembering, however, that individual specimens can vary in their level of docility. Even though rose hairs are pretty darned gentle, there have been reports of a few individuals who were more prone to bite. I also recommend reading up on safe handling techniques before attempting to hold these, as a single bite can be pretty painful. Also, as with any venomous creature, there is still a small risk of a severe allergic reaction, which could theoretically be fatal. | |
