Fraser, MI The Motor City Mechanics newest acquisitions, Chris Chelios, Derian Hatcher, Bryan Smolinski and Sean Avery, stepped up to the task last weekend, combining for nine points and helping the Mechanics earn two victories.
Friday, February 11th @ Port Huron 3-2 WIN: Newly acquired NHL center Sean Avery netted two goals, including the game winner, in the Mechanics 3-2 win over the Port Huron Beacons Friday night. Trailing 1-0, Avery scored his first UHL goal on the powerplay, with assists from Blair Manning and Kevin Hansen to tie the game. The Mechanics took a 2-1 lead midway through the second period on a goal from Jeff Doyle before the Beacons knotted the score at two three minutes later. Avery found the back of the net for the second time 5:48 into the third to win the game. In goal, Cory Campbell made 30 saves for Motor City.
Saturday, February 12th vs. Muskegon 3-1 Loss: Despite outshooting the defending Colonial Cup Champions 43-19, the Mechanics suffered a 3-1 loss. The Fury dominated early, scoring three first period goals, including one shorthanded, to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Kyle Kos cut the lead to two 13:21 into the second, but Motor City was unable to muster the extra offense to close the gap. The Fury and the Mechanics combined for 88 minutes in penalties on the evening.
Sunday, February 13th vs. Port Huron 4-2 WIN: Bryan Smolinski scored two goals and added an assist as the Mechanics smoked the visiting Port Huron Beacons 4-2 on Sunday. With the score even at one, and after a scoreless second period, Smolinski broke the tie 7:34 into the third. Avery boosted the lead to two and Jeff Doyle added an empty-net insurance goal with 38 seconds remaining in the game. The Mechanics dominated the shots on goal for the second consecutive night, outshooting the Beacons 44-24. Kyle Kos added two assists on the night and Derian Hatcher and Chris Chelios each posted an assist. Kos (6-2632) now ranks 5th amongst defenseman in league scoring.
UP NEXT:
The Mechanics host the Richmond RiverDogs on Wednesday, February 16th at 7:30pm. This will be the third meeting between Richmond and Motor City this season, the series is even at 1-1. Following Richmond, the Mechanics hit the road for games against the Danbury Trashers on the 18th and 19th.
