Mechanics Earn Point In Tough Weekend
Fraser, MI – The Motor City Mechanics hosted a triple header this past weekend, earning a point against division rival Port Huron.

Friday, January 7th v. Danbury 5-0 L:

Led by Brent Gretzky, who contributed two goals and two assists, the Mechanics fell victim to the league leading Danbury Trashers. The Trashers netted three powerplay goals and one shorthanded goal in the 5-0 shutout over Motor City.

Saturday, January 8th v. Port Huron 7-6 Shootout Loss:

The Beacons dominated the first period, taking a 4-0 lead and outshooting Motor City 16-9 in the opening frame. In front of over 2,000 fans, the Mechanics battled back. Joe Burton, with an assist from rookie David Bonk, scored to put the Mechanics on the board at 5:59 of the second period. Burton returned the favor, assisting on a goal by Bonk, to bring the Mechanics within two. Port Huron found the back of the net again, edging their lead once again to three. With 39 seconds remaining in the second period, Jeff Goldie scored to make it a 5-3 contest.
In the third period, David Beauregard scored first for the Beacons, making the score 6-3. But Motor City climbed out of the hole, tallying three powerplay goals. Burton and Bonk each notched their second of the game while newcomer Chris Gignac scored his first of the season to tie the game at six. In a seven round shootout, Goldie and captain Blair Manning each scored for the Mechanics but it was Port Huron who beat Motor City netminder Rod Branch three times for the 7-6 victory.

Sunday January 9th v. Muskegon 5-3 Loss:

The defending Colonial Cup champions visited The Garage on Sunday evening. The Mechanics took control in the early going with goals from Goldie, Manning and Dan Price. Leading 3-0 early in the second period, Muskegon rallied for five unanswered goals through the second and third periods, including one empty netter to take the 5-3 win.

UP NEXT:

The Mechanics hit the road for games in Kansas City, Fort Wayne and Kalamazoo this week. Wednesday, January 12th, the Mechanics will face the Outlaws for the fifth time this season. The series is knotted up at 2-2. Friday, January 14th, Motor City will visit Fort Wayne for their fourth meeting of the season. The Mechanics have yet to beat the Komets. Saturday’s matchup will feature the Kalamazoo Wings for only the third time this season. In their last meeting, the Mechanics fell 2-1 after an 11 round shootout. The K-Wings lead the series 2-0.

Hot Hands:

The Mechanics racked up four powerplay goals on Saturday night against Port Huron. Forwards David Bonk (2g, 1a), Chris Gignac (1g, 3a) and Joe Burton (2g, 2a) combined for nine points in Saturday’s contest.

Sparky Welcomed With Open Arms:
The newest addition to the Mechanics roster, mascot Sparky, was welcomed with open arms this weekend. Be sure to catch Sparky at each Mechanics home game and keep an eye on the website for opportunities to meet Sparky in the community.

Skate With The Mechanics:

Campus Martius Park, the outdoor skating rink in downtown Detroit, is hosting the Motor City Mechanics for a public skate and meet and greet on January 27th from 7-9pm. Campus Martius is located on Woodward Avenue between Fort St. and Michigan Avenue. Be sure to bundle up and come skate with your favorite Motor City players on Thursday, January 27th.
