MECHANICS ANNOUNCE NEW HEAD COACH
3/1/2005
Fraser, MI – The Motor City Mechanics of the United Hockey League announced today Danton Cole will take over behind the bench as the Mechanics head coach for the remainder of the 2004-05 season. Interim Head Coach Garry Unger will remain as the VP and Director of Hockey Operations.
“We regret what happened with our previous coach Steve Shannon. Steve Shannon is no longer employed by, or associated with the Motor City Mechanics or the United Hockey League.” Mechanics President John Tull said.
“Danton Cole is a "professional hockey coach" who brings a wealth of experience to the Mechanics organization. The United Hockey League is a competitive professional hockey league. To compete in this league you must have a coach that can recruit, coach, communicate with his players, respect the game on and off of the ice and respect the fans! Danton Cole is our man!” Tull stated.
Cole comes to the Mechanics after having coached the Grand Rapids Griffins for the previous three seasons. Cole also coached the Muskegon Fury to a Championship in 2001-02. A native of Pontiac, Michigan, Cole played four seasons for Michigan State before turning pro. Drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, Cole played ten season of professional hockey, including stints with the Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks and winning a Stanely Cup with the Devils. Cole amassed 118 points and 125 penalty minutes in 318 NHL games.
