10/15/2004
Despite excitement of opening ceremonies, Mechanics fall 4-1 to Kalamazoo.
Fraser, MI - The Motor City Mechanics opened the season with a bang. A crowd of 2,871, fireworks and Karen Newman singing the National Anthem highlighted the opening ceremonies. The Fraser Figure Skating Club performed as well as an appearance by the Fraser Honor Guard.
After a scoreless first period, with the Mechanics going 0 for 2 on the power play and the K-Wings sitting 0 for 1, Andrew Luciuk of Kalamazoo put one past the right shoulder of Motor City net minder Rod Branch at 16:04 of the second period.
The Wings took a 2-0 lead when former NHLer Zarley Zalapski capitalized on the power play at the 7:27 mark of the third period. Faron Duthie scored and Zalapski picked up his second goal of the evening just 31 seconds apart to put Kalamazoo head 4-0. The Mechanics got on the board with just over a minute remaining in the third period. Blair Manning recorded the first goal in Motor City history.
In goal, former Michigan State University standout Chad Alban had 27 saves for Kalamazoo. Branch stopped 34 shots between the pipes for the Mechanics. The Mechanics play the Fury tomorrow night in Muskegon before returning home on October 22 to play Kansas City.
