My name is Barry Johnson and among my many
interests are espionage and cold war history. SPIES: Fact & Fiction was created on the 30th of December 1998, during
a very late night (or early morning) insomnia driven web surfing session in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. The second version was designed using FrontPage 98 on Saturday the 5th of June 1999 in
Scottsdale, Arizona. And updated again using FrontPage 2000 on Sunday the 29th
of August 1999. All my websites had a complete upgrade during the week of April 9th through the 16th in the year 2000. This time without the use of HTML text editors.
My obsession with spies (and astronauts for that matter) began while growing up in the 1960s. I watched everything I could on TV: Man From U.N.C.L.E., I Spy, Hogan's Heroes, Get Smart...
While in high school and college, I studied the history of espionage with an emphasis on the world wars and the cold war. I'm still studying to this day. It's now one of my lifelong pursuits.
The closest I ever got to experiencing anything like the life of a spy was when I worked from 1986 until 1998 in positions like Store Detective, Loss Prevention Manager for Meijer Inc in Cascade, Jenison, Grand Rapids, Greenville, Ionia, and Lansing Michigan; as an Asset Protection Investigator for Venture Inc in Houston, Texas; and as a Licensed Private Investigator for Discovery Detective Group in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Then I saw an internet web site in August 1998 and my whole life changed. Eventually I started work in the "new economy" and here I am with a new career in search engine optimization and positioning, competitive intelligence, advanced internet research, and network security, while playing with experimental web pages on the side.
Among my many crazy entrepreneurial dreams, I'd like to start a new Cable TV company: The Spy Channel -- The 24 Hour Cable Television Spy Network.
I hope you enjoy this site. Please feel free to visit my other pages. If you have any suggestions, please send me an e-mail. Thanks for visiting!
