Ancestors and Descendants of Jeremiah Annas
Of
North Carolina
There is little that is known about the earliest ancestors of a North Carolina clan of the Annas/Annis family, Jeremiah Annas, but what is known seems to be well documented. The general consensus is that the family originated from the early Virginia Annis family of Sir John Ennis and his son James Ennis of Athlone, Westmeath, Ireland.
Westmeath County is part of the Midlands Region and the province of Leinster. It is named after the ancient Kingdom of Meath (Old Irish: Mide). Athlone or Atha Luain: “The Ford of Luan” is a thriving historical town located in the in the heart of the Lakelands of Ireland. It stands on the border of two counties, Westmeath and Roscommon and links two provinces Leinster and Connaught. Traditionally the bridge of Athlone was the main crossing point between east and west overlooked by the landmark Athlone Castle, which dates back to the 13th century. It is one of the 21 walled, fortified cities of Ireland.
James went as a young boy of three to America with his father Sir John Ennis and family tradition states that James fought in the Revolutionary War. The records verify his service with the 9th Virginia Regiment of North Carolina Militia, Captain Thomas Snead, commanding, as of August 11, 1775.
James later bought land on the Catawba River in Burke County, North Carolina and moved there with his family in early 1780. The following comes from Affidavit of Willis Lyons Ennis dated 17 April 1937: "James Ennis was the one and only child and heir to all the Towns and Lands of Augha, Cashel, Momrach, Bananarow, Caldragh, Tullaghmore, Kmckullen, Gortnarne, Agapoloo, and Killacross, all situated in the Baron of Leitrim, and the County of Leitrim, Ireland".
This Annis lineage is under research and will be updated on a regular basis. The Jeremiah Annas lineage has descendants that have used many of the predominant spellings of the surname: Ennis, Annas, and Annis and are generally still located in several counties of North Carolina. Their history in the United States of America is both long and proud.

JEREMIAH ANNAS or ENNIS, SR. was born about 1764 in Augusta County, Virginia. Jeremiah's name is spelled several ways, including ENNIS in existing records. He went to Burke County, North Carolina with his parents in the 1780's and married in about 1806 to GRACE BEAN in Burke County. It was here that he raised his large family and died there about 1840. The records of Jeremiah and Grace's children are quite confusing because of nicknames and duplications (e.g Betty for Elizabeth and Mollie for Mary). The following list may only be partial.

JEREMIAH ANNAS JR. (JEREMIAH ANNAS, SR.) was born February 5, 1816 in Burke County, North Carolina, and died August 10, 1900 at Lovelady, North Carolina. He married in 1850 to SUSANNA CAROLINE ABERNETHY, daughter of BERRYMAN ABERNETHY and REBECCA DERR. She was born July 1, 1829, and died March 1, 1912.
Jeremiah and his wife, are buried at Sardis Cemetery, Hudson County, Caldwell, North Carolina.

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the Annas' from this clan from North Carolina at the Annis Family Reunion at Orlando, Florida in 1999. His name was Dyke Hamiliton Annas (Fritz, Theodore, Jeremiah Jr., Jeremiah Sr.) He was born December 31, 1931 in Morganton, North Carolina and he married Nancy Carolyn Connell on January 6, 1951 in Rhodhiss, North Carolina
Dyke was considerate enough to share much of his family history and was kind enough to write me a very nice letter. A wonderful man and if he is an example of the kind of person that comes from this family, than they are well represented.
