The following information was previously presented as a WORKING HYPOTHESIS, and it has finally been proven, by DNA test results,
that this is the same EBENEZER who was a son of WILLIAM and
PATIENCE (see below).
1.EBENEZER BRUSTER I died Abt 1774 in ,Fincastle County, VA
(County abolished
1777).
Notes for EBENEZER BRUSTER:
1. EBENEZER BREWSTER (WILLIAM (4) m. Patience, BENJAMIN (3) m.
Anne (Addis)
Darte, JONATHAN (2) m. Lucretia Oldham, ELDER WILLIAM (1) m.
Mary) was born 1
Feb 1702/03 in Lebanon, New London, CT, and died Aft. Jun 1753.
He married
ELIZABETH DE WOLF 13 Nov 1721 in Lebanon, New London, CT,
daughter of CHARLES DE
WOLF and PRUDENCE. SOURCE-Marriage and children
"The Brewster Genealogy 1566-1907", Compiled and edited
by Emma C. Brewster

iv. ELIZABETH, b. March 7, 1729.

JEK NOTE: There is no death information for EBENEZER in Emma C.
Brewster Jones' book, indicating that he had
"disappeared" from the Connecticut records prior to his
death.
EBENEZER had a "second" wife who was the mother of
his children who established families of their own in
Virginia.
As far as the MAYFLOWER SOCIETY goes, they have NO further
information about EBENEZER (or his brother WILLIAM), and they
would be glad to consider anyone's application for membership who
can present a "documented" application.
The following documents may be the most "telling" background information available regarding EBENEZER and his brother, WILLIAM, which would have made it possible for each of them to remarry (or not) and establish second families.
In 1739, ELIZABETH BREWSTER, wife of EBENEZER, petitioned for
a divorce, which we can only assume was granted.
In 1749, MEHITABLE BRUSTER, wife of WILLIAM, also petitioned for
a divorce, which we can only assume was granted.

The Brewster family came to Beekman by 1746 and remained through
1790 but
appeared only at intervals. EBENEZER BREWSTER was noted on a 17
March 1746/7
road description near lot 2 and the Oblong. He adjoined Nathan
Birdsall's farm.
[SBP 1:343]. He was taxed from Feb. through June 1753 but had
been taxed in the
South Precinct from Feb. 1747/48 through June 1748. His
assessments were L1 in
both Southern and Beekman Precincts. A William Brewster was also
taxed there at
this time. He was quite wealthy. (An Ebenezer Brewster was born

SOURCE-Further evidence of location after Beekman Patent in the
Oblong, Dutchess
County, NY.
A TIMELINE:
1730-1741: COMFORT b. (probably in Dutchess County, NY)
1747: EBENEZER I, taxed in South Precinct in the Oblong, Dutchess
Co., NY.
1753: EBENEZER I, taxed in Beekman Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY
(his brother
WILLIAM also taxed there at this time).
1754: WILLIAM, brother of EBENEZER I, moved to Virginia per Diary
of Jabez
Fitch, Jr.)
1755: General Bradick defeated in Virginia.
1757: WILLIAM BREWSTER, brother of EBENEZER I, and his family
were run out of
Virginia by Indians. WILLIAM returned to the Oblong in Dutchess
Co., NY. [per
Diary of Jabez Fitch, Jr.]
1761: EBENEZER I, of Frederick Co., VA, borrowed money from
JOSIAH HULS[E] to
purchase land in Hampshire Co., VA. (per Kim Davis) NOTE:
Hampshire Co, VA,
was created in 1754 from Frederick & Augusta Counties.
Hampshire County is now
in WV.
1762: EBENEZER BRUSTER I, mentioned in the Order Book of
Frederick Co., VA,
dated 7-SEP-1762. [per Sam Finley Brewster, Sr., hereafter
referred to as SFB]
1764: WILLIAM, brother of EBENEZER I, who lives in the Oblong,
Dutchess Co.,
NY, makes a trip to Norwich, New London Co., CT, to visit his
relatives there.
He tells Jabez Fitch, Jr. of his second marriage, removal to
Virginia, and
return to the Oblong.
1765: EBENEZER I, of Frederick Co., VA, sold Hampshire Co., VA,
land to
NICHOLAS MC INTYRE. (per Kim Davis) Joe Ogle tells us that
EBENEZER I received
a land grant from Lord Fairfax of 118 acres in Hampshire Co., VA,
in 1765.
1770-1773: EBENEZER III, son of COMFORT, born sometime during
this period.
1774: EBENEZER BRUSTER I, d. Fincastle Co., VA. A Fincastle Co.
land entry
referenced "EBENEZER BRUSTER, heir to EBENEZER BRUSTER,
deceased." [per Joe
Ogle].
1777: COMFORT BREWSTER took Oath of Allegiance. [Virginia
Historical Magazine,
Vol. 46, p. 257].
1783: COMFORT BRUSTER noted in Montgomery Co., VA. [SFB]
1785: An unknown MICHAEL BREWSTER signed a petition to form
Russell Co., VA,
from Washington Co. [per Joe Ogle]
1788: COMFORT's son, THOMAS, m. SARAH DAVIS. [SFB]
1792: Virginia Census shows a BENJAMIN BRUSTER. [SFB and Joe
Ogle]
1792: COMFORT and sons THOMAS and EBENEZER III, signed petition
to Governor of
Wythe Co., VA, for further protection from the Indians. [SFB]
1793: EBENEZER (presumed to be II), JAMES, and JEREMIAH of
Russell Co., VA,
(now Tazewell Co.) signed petition to create Tazewell Co. [per
Joe Ogle]
1794: The tax list of Russell Co., VA, shows EBENEZER BREWSTER
II, household
as having 1 male over 21 tithable and 3 males 16-21 tithable
(perhaps the
above JAMES and JEREMIAH are among these [3 males 16-21]. [per
Joe Ogle]. What
is name of the third male?
NOTE per JE Killick [jeannieology@aol.com]: if JAMES and JEREMIAH
are 2 of the
3 males 16-21, that leaves us with one whose name is not
revealed,
b.1773-1778. Although he was old enough to be taxed, he must not
have been old
enough to sign the petition in 1793? Is he perhaps the ZADOCK who
appears with
JAMES in the 1810 Federal Census of Knox Co., KY?
1795: Another petition to form Tazewell Co., VA, is signed by
EBENEZER II,
JAMES and JEREMIAH. [per Joe Ogle]
1795: The Russell Co., VA, tax list shows EBENEZER II, JAMES and
JEREMIAH each
having a household of 1 male over 21 tithable. [per Joe Ogle].
1796: The Russell Co., VA, tax list shows EBENEZER II and
JEREMIAH only. (per
Joe Ogle].
1797-1798: The Russell Co., VA, tax list shows EBENEZER II, JAMES
and
JEREMIAH. (per Joe Ogle].
1798: Another Russell Co., VA, petition to form Tazewell Co. is
signed by
JAMES only. This is the last reference Joe Ogle has for this
particular JAMES
BREWSTER. Is he perhaps shown in the 1810 Fed. Census of Knox
Co., KY?
1799: The Russell Co., VA, tax list shows EBENEZER II and
JEREMIAH only. (per
Joe Ogle].
1799: from page 36 of the Order Book for Wythe County for the
years 1799 to
1801, dated Aug. 13, 1799. The complete entry is as follows:
"On the motion of
Ebenezer Bruster who made and entered into bond according to law
in the sum of
four hundred dollars with Thomas Witten & James Sloan his
securities
administration of the estate of Comfort Bruster decd is granted
him." We can
assume that such business occurred quite shortly after Comfort's
death. So
Comfort probably died in July 1799 or early August. Usually this
sort of thing
falls on the eldest son, but our files show that Ebenezer is
younger than his
brother Thomas. (per Steve Jamison's research efforts,
11-FEB-1999)
1800: There is a listing and valuation of the various items in
Comfort's
estate that was filed with the court on 11 March 1800. The list
contains about
50 items beginning with Four head of cattle (9 pounds 6
shillings) and ending
with One pair of cards & spelling book (4 pence). The county
clerk was R.
Crockett and the three witnesses were William Brooks, John
Thompson and James
Sloan. (per Steve Jamison's research effots, 11-FEB-1999)
1800: By 1800, Tazewell Co., VA, has been formed. Records for the
first few
years are scarce. [per Joe Ogle].
1802: Apparently the land where JEREMIAH lived remained in
Russell County, as
he is shown in the tax entry there. After 1802, he is not seen
there again.
(per Joe Ogle]. Per Wilma Gibson, JEREMIAH may have removed to
North Carolina
and then to Tennesee by 1824.
1818: EBENEZER BREWSTER (brother? of COMFORT) dies in Tazewell
County, VA.
Children of EBENEZER BRUSTER I are:
2.i.COMFORT BRUSTER, b. Bet. 1730 - 1741; d. 1799, ,Wythe Co.,

SOURCE-Query 22-MAR-1998 via the Internet: "Looking for
information on Comfort
Bruster who died in Wythe County, Virginia in 1799. He had three
children:
Thomas, Zilpha, and Ebenezer. It is believed that he had a
brother Ebenezer who
died in 1818. Benjamin Bruster could possibly be his father or
another
brother**. We have not been able to go from this point. Would you
have any
information to help us? We are descendants of Thomas Brewster. We
would
appreciate hearing from you. Thanks! /s/ Wilma Z. Brewster."
**NOTE: At this
point in time, we believe BENJAMIN BRUSTER is actually a son of
Comfort--Per Joe
Ogle and Jeanne E. Killick.
SOURCE-Email from WilmaZBrewster 15-APR-1998:
"Tazewell County was formed in 1799 from Russell County and
Wythe County, so
Comfort could not have been born in Tazewell County as last
reported. Perhaps we
should check nearby counties in West Virginia as well as
Virginia."

Tazewell County Historical Society Newsletter, Vol 11, No. 1,
March 1998, pages
9-14,
"THE BREWSTER (BRUSTER) FAMILIES OF TAZEWELL AND MC DOWELL
COUNTIES" by Dr.
Thomas C. Hatcher, President, Tazewell County Historical Society.
In this
document, Dr. Hatcher refers often to the book "William B
Bruster,
Virginia-Tennessee, 1793-1853" 1966, by Sam Finley Brewster,
Sr., a copy of
which is in the Virginia Room of the Tazewell County Library,
Tazewell, VA. Dr.
Hatcher tells us that Sam Finley Brewster, Sr. presented the
hypothesis that
COMFORT BRUSTER was a descendant of the Elder William Brewster
through his son
JONATHAN, and his son BENJAMIN. It was after the third generation
that Sam was
not sure of the continuation of the line.
SOURCE-A Second Marriage? Dr. Hatcher, in the above article,
mentions that
COMFORT married 3-JUN-1777 SARAH DAVIS. Unfortunately, he does
not mention a
source for this statement.
SOURCE-Extending the Hypothesis:
We are extending Sam Finley Brewster's hypothesis based on
information found in
the Diary of Jabez Fitch, Jr. of Norwich, New London,
Connecticut. This
information, combined with the work of many other researchers,
leads us to
believe that COMFORT is a son of EBENEZER BREWSTER I, b. 1702/03
in Lebanon, now
New London County, Connecticut. See his record. /s/ Jeanne E.
Killick,
SEPT-1998.
Children of COMFORT BRUSTER are:
i. BENJAMIN BRUSTER, b. Bet. 1760 - 1770, ,,VA; d. Bef. 1840,
,Pike County, IN.

or his brother
Jeremiah. When I first found them, I thought I had found where
Jeremiah went to,
but my James was in Overton Co., TN 1840. Jeremiah s/o Jeremiah
went to IL. I
have heard from about three different sources that Jeremiah
married Susan and
then later the last name Millard was added, but I do not know
their source. If
you noticed I put wife unknown. /s/ Wilma Gibson

James P. states again that he thinks JAMES and JEREMIAH of Russel
Co., VA are
brothers, that JAMES left first and likely went to Knox Co., KY
and then on to
Sevier Co., TN. The JEREMIAH who was in Sevier Co., TN 1840 m.
BARSHEBA and
moved to Washington Co., ARK, BUT there is no absolute fact to
support this.
Hope this helps you with your work. /s/ Wilma Gibson

CYRUS of

"unidentified" son

Much more information on these lines has been collected and
compiled by many of you who are researching these lines. EBENEZER
BRUSTER I has been proven (by DNA results) to be the same who is
a descendant of the Elder William Brewster of Mayflower fame. As
you continue to document your lines, be sure to collect Bible and
cemetery records as well as vital records, land transactions, and
anything else that will help to provide the proof that you are in
search of.
I suggest that you begin collecting items of evidence such as
those shown
below.:
1761: EBENEZER I, of Frederick Co., VA, borrowed money from
JOSIAH HULS[E] to
purchase land in Hampshire Co., VA.
1762: EBENEZER I, mentioned in the Order Book of Frederick Co.,
VA, dated
7-SEP-1762.
1765: EBENEZER I, of Frederick Co., VA, sold Hampshire Co., VA,
land to
NICHOLAS MC INTYRE.
1765: EBENEZER I received a land grant from Lord Fairfax of 118
acres in
Hampshire Co., VA.
1774: EBENEZER I, d. Fincastle Co., VA. A Fincastle Co. land
entry referenced
"EBENEZER BRUSTER, heir to EBENEZER BRUSTER, deceased."
1799: From the Court Order Book of Wythe County, VA (1799-1801),
p. 36 "August 10, 1799--EBENEZER BRUSTER, administrator of
the estate of COMFORT BRUSTER dec'd asked to be released from his
bond." (Sam Finley Brewster). It is IMPORTANT to check these
records to see who became Administrator. A copy of COMFORT's Will
would be a definite plus! Perhaps he mentions his brother,
EBENEZER. If someone locates these records, please share the
information!
1818: EBENEZER BREWSTER (brother? of COMFORT) dies in Tazewell
County, VA.
Someone needs to locate and report some evidence of EBENEZER's
death. This information is VITAL to our search too. Perhaps there
is a Will. If someone locates these records, please share the
information!
I'm looking forward to your input of further evidence of these
peoples' lives to add to the TIMELINE, and I encourage discussion
of all pieces of the puzzle. It really does help!!

My interest in YOUR puzzle is through EBENEZER's brother, WILLIAM, who returned to New York, and is my own BRUSTER ancestor.
Be sure to check out EBENEZER's own web page EBENEZER, son of WILLIAM and PATIENCE. Once you are at that site, you can also check out the BREWSTER Surname DNA Project.
