Poebrotherium Lower Tooth, Early Camel Fossil, Badlands South Dakota, P273
: This is a fossil jaw section of an early camel, Poebrotherium wilsoni. Locality: Private land in Pennington County, South Dakota
Note that ruler increments are 1/16 inch.
Camelidae Early camels, Poebrotherium
The discovery of the early camel Poebrotherium in the White River Badlands was initially puzzling. Few complete remains were found and nobody expected to find such a primitive camel in North America. Ultimately it was determined that camels first appeared in North America during the Unitan NALMA of the middle Eocene. Their expansion during the late Eocene coincided with a drying trend that produced the first areas of grassless savanna in North America. The limb morphology of Poebrotherium includes very elongate axial metapodials, reduced lateral metapodials and sharp ungual phalanges that suggest early camels were adapted to a cursorial existence in more open habitats. Unlike living camelids which are digitigrade and have padded feet, Poebrotherium was unguligrade and its ungual phalanges probably bore deer-like hooves.
Early camels were lightly built and resembled modern llamas. Only two feet tall, perhaps 50 lb in weight, and without any derived features, their eyes were located farther back in the skull when compared with those of modern camels. Their ribs were also much lighter. Poebrotherium had a split toe, a variation that would later evolve into a pad underneath these toes that is still seen in modern camels. Poebrotherium teeth are less hypsodont and more primitive than any other camelid except Poebrodon. They are small and have a hollow triangular cross-section which later evolved into more distinct dental variations adapted for plucking and grinding vegetation Teeth toward the front of the jaw are reduced in size and peg-like. The skull of Poebrotherium is approximately 7 inches long and constructed of thin fragile bones. Because camel skulls are narrow and elongated, most have broken cheekbones and orbits when found, and complete skulls are a rare find.
Compared to other herbivores, camelids are relatively rare in the Eocene. This did not change until after the Chadronian NALMA when the remains of Poebrotherium wilsoni, the gazelle-camel, became abundant in the White River deposits of Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, and although camel remains are more common in Nebraska and eastern Wyoming than in South Dakota, their remains are still rarer than those of oreodonts. Living camelids from South America, including vicuna and guanacos as well as the domesticated alpaca and llama, do not have humps and probably resemble the early camels of the White River beds.

Spinosaurus moroccanus (Sail) Vertebra

WAS $550.00 SALE $385 (plus shipping).
USA Shipping: $____
----------
This museum-quality replica Spinosaurus (sail) vertebra was found in Morocco.
The giant sail structure on the back of Spinosaurus is probably its most recognizable feature. The sail was up to 6 feet tall and was supported by vertebrae with greatly elongated Spinous Process.
Spinosaurus was the biggest of all the carnivorous dinosaurs, larger than Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus. It lived during part of the Cretaceous period, roaming the swamps of North Africa. Spinosaurus was first discovered in the early 1900s by German paleontologist Ernst von Stromer. During the second World War, Allied bombs inadvertently destroyed the only significant remains of the sail-backed predator.
Two Spinosaurus species have been named based on the regions where they were discovered: Spinosaurus aegyptiacus Egyptian spine lizard) and Spinosaurus maroccanus (Moroccan spine lizard).
HOW BIG WAS SPINOSAURUS
In a 2005 study in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, researchers estimated Spinosaurus was 52 to 59 feet (16 to 18 m) long and weighed 7.7 to 9.9 tons (7 to 9 metric tons), based on extrapolations from skull measurements. However, other scientists took issue with the study's methods, and instead claimed the behemoth was 41 to 47 feet (12.6 to 14.3 m) long and 13.2 to 23 tons (12 to 20.9 metric tons), according to a 2007 study in the same journal. The partial Spinosaurus skeleton Ibrahim and his colleagues analyzed suggests the specimen was 50 feet (15.2 m) long and still growing
Spinosaurus means "spine lizard," an appropriate descriptor, as the dinosaur had very long spines growing on its back to form what is referred to as a "sail." The distinctive spines, which grew out of the animal's back vertebrae, were up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) long and were likely connected to one another by skin.
Recent fossil evidence shows Spinosaurus was the first dinosaur that was able to swim, and likely spent most of its life in the water, according to a study published September 2014 in the journal Science. "Spinosaurus had short hind limbs (like early whales and other animals that spent more and more time in the water), dense and compact bones (penguins show a similar bone profile in cross section), wide and flat claws and feet (possibly used in paddling), and a long and slender snout with conical teeth (perfect for catching fish)," said Nizar Ibrahim, a University of Chicago vertebrate paleontologist and lead author of the study.

This specimen was recovered from the Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation, Utah. Hippodraco was named by Andrew T. McDonald, James I. Kirkland, Donald D. DeBlieux, Scott K. Madsen, Jennifer Cavin, Andrew R. C. Milner, and Lukas Panzarin in 2010, and the type species is Hippodraco scutodens

Bravoceratops is an extinct genus of large chasmosaurine ceratopsid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Javelina Formation in what is now Texas, United States. Bravoceratops was a relatively large and heavily built, quadrupedal ground-dwelling herbivore. This discovery is significant paleontologically because ceratopsian dinosaur remains occur only rarely in the Javelina Formation, and Bravoceratops provides useful temporal and paleobiogeographic data to researchers about the proliferation of chasmosaurines from Edmontonian to Lancian time during the Late Cretaceous.
The genus name Bravoceratops means "wild horn-face", and is derived from the Mexican name for the Rio Grande, "Rio Bravo del Norte" (wild river of the north), and the Greek words "keras" (κέρας) meaning "horn" and "op" referring to the "face".
The specific name polyphemus refers to the giant cyclops Polyphemus confronted by Odysseus in the Greek epic poem, The Odyssey. Bravoceratops was described and named by Steven L. Wick and Thomas M. Lehman in 2013 and the type species is Bravoceratops polyphemus.

Dilong paradoxus
Dilong (which means 'emperor dragon') is a genus of small tyrannosauroid dinosaur. The only species is Dilong paradoxus. It is from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation near Lujiatun, Beipiao, in the western Liaoning province of China. It was described by Xu Xing and colleagues in 2004
The type specimen is IVPP 14243 (Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing), a nearly complete, semi-articulated, skull and skeleton. Referred material includes IVPP 1242, a nearly complete skull and presacral vertebrae, TNP01109 (Tianjin Museum of Natural History), a partial skull, and IVPP V11579, another skull that may belong to D. paradoxus or may be a related species. The type specimen of Dilong was about 1.6 m (5.2 ft) in length, but it is thought to be a juvenile and may have been over 2 m (6.5 ft) long when fully grown.
Dilong paradoxus had a covering of simple feathers or protofeathers. The feathers were seen in fossilized skin impressions from near the jaw and tail. They are not identical to modern bird feathers, lacking a central shaft and most likely used for warmth since they could not have enabled flight.
