More Return of the King

Starring

The power of the three rings is ended.

Now begins the dominion of Men.

This task was appointed to you, Frodo of the Shire. If you do not find a way, no one will.

So we come to it in the end,
the great battle of our time, in which many things shall pass away.
But at least there is no longer need for hiding.

~King Theoden The Return of the King Book V, Chapter III: The Muster of Rohan

The stars are veiled, there is a sleepless malice in the East...
The eye of the enemy in moving.

Things are now in motion that cannot be undone. Sauron has looked into the face of young Peregrin Took and mistaken him for the Ring-bearer.

It is before the walls of Minas Tirith that
the doom of our time will be decided

The way is shut. It was made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it. The way is shut.

The dead are following...I see shapes of
men and horses and pale banners like
shreds of clouds, and spears like winter
thickets on a misty night.

The dead do not suffer the living to pass.
You will suffer me.

Anduril, flame of the West...
forged from the shards
of Narsil. The man who
can wield the power of this
sword can summon to him
an army more deadly than
any that walk this earth

Hold your ground, hold your ground.
Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers.
I see in your eyes the same fear that will take the heart of me.
A day may come when the courage of men fails.
When we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship,
but it is not this day.
An hour of wolves and shattered shields
when the age of men comes crashing down,
but it is not this day.
This day we fight.
For all that you hold dear on this good Earth,
I bid you, stand Men of the West.

Then suddenly he beheld his sister Eoywn as she lay,
and he knew her.
He stood a moment as a man who is pierced in the midst of a cry by an arrow through the heart;
and then his face went deathly white...

'Eowyn, Eowyn!' he cried at last.
'Eowyn how come you here?
What madness or devilry is this?
Death, death, death! Death take us all!'

'Death! Ride, ride to ruin and the world's ending!'

~The Return of the King Book V, Chapter VI: The Battle of Pelennor Fields

He knows not to what end he rides,
yet if he knew he would still go on

Where will wants not, a way opens...

'Thank you indeed!' said Merry. 'Thank you, sir, though I do not know your name.'
'Do you not?' said the Rider softly. 'then call me Dernhelm.'

~The Return of the King Book V, Chapter III: The Muster of Rohan

Courage, Merry, courage for our friends

Whatever happens, stay with me. I'll look after you.

Ride now, ride now,
ride to ruin and the world's ending

Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

~The Return of the King Book V, Chapter V: The Ride of the Rohirrim

I would have you smile again... not grieve for those whose time has come.

Aragorn: Eowyn, why have you come?
Eowyn: Do you not know?
Aragorn: It is but a shadow and a thought that you love. I cannot give you what you seek.

'Farewell, Lady of Rohan! I drink to the fortunes of your House,
and of you, and of all your people.
Say to your brother: beyond the shadows we may meet again!

Then it seemed to Legolas and Gimli who were nearby that she wept,
and in one so stern and proud that seemed the more grievous. But she
said: 'Aragorn wilt thou go?'

'I will,' he said.

'Then wilt thou not let me ride with this company, as I have asked?'

'I will not, lady,' he said. 'For that I could not grant without leave of
the king and your brother; and they will not return until tomorrow. But
I count now every hour, indeed every minute. Farewell!'

Then she fell on her knees, saying: 'I beg thee!'

'Nay, lady,' he said, and taking her by the hand he raised her. Then he
kissed her hand, and sprang into the saddle, and rode away, and did not
look back; and only those who knew him well and were near him saw
the pain that he bore.

But Eowyn stood still as a figure carven in stone, her hands clenched at
her sides, and she watched them until they passed into the shadows under
the black Dwimorberg, the Haunted Mountain, in which was the Door of
the Dead. When they were lost to view, she turned, stumbling as one that is blind...

~The Return of the King Book V Chapter II: The Passing of the Grey Company

Your father loves you, Faramir. He will remember it before the end.

My lord, Osgiliath is overrun.

  • You wish now our places had been exchanged? That I had died and Boromir had lived?
  • Yes. I wish that.
  • Since you have been robbed of Boromir, I shall do what I can in his stead. If I should return, think better of me, father.

  • Is there any hope, Gandalf, for Frodo and Sam?
  • There never was much hope. Just a fool's hope.

    If the Ring is destroyed,
then Sauron will fall, and his
fall will be so low that none
will see his arising ever again.
But if Sauron regains the Ring,
    his victory will be swift
    and complete.

Courage will now be your best defence
aganist the storm that is at hand

    For Frodo

Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
    To hope's end I rode and heart's breaking;
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!

~The Return of the King Book V, Chapter VI: The Battle of Pelennor Fields

Pippin: I knew you'd find me.
Merry: Are you going to leave me?
Pippin: No, Merry. I'm going to take care of you.

Authority is not given to you, Steward, to deny the return of the king!

To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
West, west away, the round sun is falling.
Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me?
    I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;
For our days our ending and our years failing.
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.
Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling,
Sweet are the voices in the Lost Isle calling,
In Eressea, in Elvenhome that no man can discover,
Where the leaves fall not: land of my people for ever!

~Legolas The Return of the King Book V, Chapter VI: The Battle of Pelennor Fields

And thus it was that the Fourth Age of Middle-earth began,
and the Fellowship of the Ring, though eternally bound
by friendship and love, was ended.
