Matinee (1993)

"John Goodman (Arachnophobia, Always) stars as a gimmicky film producer (loosely based on 1950s schlockmeister William Castle, the man behind such B-movie classics as House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler) who tries to cash in by releasing his latest horror film in Florida against the backdrop of hysteria surrounding the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Cathy Moriarty (Casper, Raging Bull) co-stars in director Joe Dante's (Gremlins, The Howling) outrageous paean to big-bug creature features."
Airs occasionally on the SciFi Channel and USA Network

The black-and-white film within the film "Matinee" stars William Schallert in his long-time movies role as a scientist who calmly explains that a man exposed to radiation is mutating into a giant ant/man, a Mant.

Jesse White, who appeared in Twilight Zone episodes including the 1-hour pilot (as the bar owner in Pearl Harbor the morning of 12-7-41 who thinks time-traveler William Bendix is a trouble-maker & throws him out) appears in this one as a theater-chain owner, and Robert Picardo (the doctor in Star Trek Voyager) is the nervous theater manager, who is secretly building a fallout shelter in its basement. Kevin McCarthy (of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers fame) has a cameo. Rated PG
