Descendants of Daniel Nugent (d. 1924) and
Margaret Russell (d. 1933)

September 2017: Well, with a trip to Ireland only two days away, I figure it's time to update the old website. For like the first time in about 15 years. Or as much as I can get done before I leave. Wonder if I'm the only one in the world still using Angelfire, and html?

Genealogical note:

The grandchildren of Daniel and Margaret Nugent are my father's (Michael Slator's) first cousins, and are my first cousins, once removed. Their children are my second cousins.

Personal note: Developing and maintaining this Web site has been a labor of love. It has taken many hours of work over the last several years and will continue to do so in the future, but the rewards are great. I've learned so much about my heritage, and I've had the good furtune to make contact with many, many relatives in Ireland, Australia, Scotland and here in the U.S. that I never knew I had. Among those I've heard from are:

  • Billy Larby, Alice Roche, Aelish Tuite, Ena (Corbett) Griffin and Danny and Bridey Nugent, from Ireland
  • Gary Hirons and Kevin Hirons-Brown, from Scotland
  • Sheila (Tuohy) Fitzgerald, Jill (Nugent) Rogers, and Jim Nugent, from Australia
  • Jimmy Walsh, from New York City
  • John Griffin, from St. Louis, Missouri

I've even been in contact with several Canadian World War II veterans who served with my uncle, Danny Slator. Danny who enlisted in the Canadian army at age 16 under my dad's name, and was killed in August 1944. A couple of the men I've heard from knew Danny personally, or knew about him.

But I've been frustrated by my inability to learn much, if anything, about my grandfather's brother and his parents, Daniel Slator and Helen (nee Lewis) Slator. And I know nothing at all about their lineage. I even hired a couple of genalogical researchers in Ireland awhile back to conduct reasearch on my grandfather, but they turned up little information other than about the medals he earned serving in World War I. I don't even have a Jack Slator's birth certificate.

Elsewhere on this site I've included essentially everthing I know about Jack Slator's family. The discouraging part of this whole process is that I'm out of ideas about how to get at this information. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone reading had information to share, or advice about how to get it myself.

Background notes:

  • Michael Nugent's father (name unknown) had a brother named Daniel, who lived for a time in The Railway Hotel, Cardiff, Wales.

  • Michael Nugent had a brother Patrick (Pakie) who married Pidge Russell (no relation to Margaret Russell). Michael and Pidge had two or three children. (Source: Billy Larby, via Aelish (Larby) Tuite.)

  • I recently learned that I have distant relations in Australia. I've been in contact with Jill Rogers (nee Nugent) and her brother, Jimmy Nugent, of New South Wales, Australia. They are great-grandchildren of James Daniel Nugent Sr., who was a brother to my great-grandfather, Michael Nugent. James Nugent had a son, James Jr., who had a son named Patrick Michael Nugent. Patrick married Queenie Madlene Barter, who had Jill and Jimmy and the rest of their family. Jill is married to Jim Rogers. Jimmy Nugent, recently sent me a vast amount of information about the Nugents, which I hope to add to this page soon. I believe Jill and Jimmy are my third cousins, since our common ancestor is a great-great-grandparent. For information on the Australian Nugents, click here.

  • I recently learned the following information about Jack Slator and his family:
    • Jack was apparently baptized Catholic, not Protestant, as previously thought
    • Jack's father, Daniel, married Helen Lewis
    • Daniel Slator and Helen (or Ellen) Lewis were natives of Ireland
    • Helen (or Ellen) Lewis died in either 1911 or 1913, at age 62, from kidney problems
    • Daniel Slator died in 1914 at the age of 67, of "old age"
    • Jack's only sibling was named James, who died in World War I
    • When Jack was a child -- possibly after he turned age 13 (in 1905) -- his family moved to England, probably to Liverpool. Jack began an apprenticeship as a shoemaker.
    • Ernest George Larby, husband of Anastasia Nugent (my great-aunt) served in the U.K. army during World War I, according to my Aunt Helen.
    • Katie Nugent and F.J. Hirons had a daughter named Margaret, in addition to a son named Arthur. Below is a photo of Katie and Arthur.
    • I've had contact with Gary Hirons, who lives in Dundee, Scotland, and is a grandchild of Arthur Hirons.
    • I have recently been contacted by Kevin Hirons-Brown, of Glasgow, Scotland, UK, who is one of Arthur Hirons's children. Kevin has kindly provided some of the information below about the Hirons family.
    • I've also been in contact with Ena Griffin from Tipperary, Ireland, who is a daughter of Margaret "Maggie" Nugent. (See #7 below.)

  • Margaret Russell had two siblings, Ann, who never married, and James, who was a member of the Fenian Brotherhood. James was killed in 1867 at age 20 in a Fenian uprising in Ballyhurst, which is one mile from Tipperary. He is buried in Lattin churchyard, which is five or six miles from Tipperary. There is a monument to him there. (HISTORICAL NOTE: On March 5, 1867, an abortive Fenian uprising against English rule took place in Ireland. The unsuccessful rebellion by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, known as the Fenians, gave Australia its final generation of convicts. The 1999 book "The Great Shame and the Triumph of the Irish in the English-Speaking World" by Thomas Keneally tells the story of the Irish shipped to Australia.

1F.J. Hirons is listed on the "Debt of Honor Register," which is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The CWGC was "established by Royal Charter in 1917. Its duties are to mark and maintain the graves of the members of the forces of the Commonwealth who were killed in the two World Wars, to build memorials to those who have no known grave and to keep records and registers, including, after the Second World War, a record of the Civilian War Dead."

According to the CWGC, FJ Hirons (#3049) was a rifleman with the 3rd Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He was killed on Monday, August 16, 1915, and is buried in the LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was survived by Catherine Mary Hirons, of 10, Cashel Rd., Tipperary.

The name of my uncle, "Michael Joseph" Danny Slator, who died during World War II, can also be found on the CWGC's Debt of Honor Register.

Thank you to Danny Nugent of Tipperary, Billy Larby of Dublin (and Billy's daughter, Aelish Tuite), Ena Griffin of Tipperary, and Jimmy Nugent of New South Wales, Australia, for providing much of the above information.
