So, you want a custom pony, hmm?

Great!

But you don't know how to do it?

No problem. All you have to do is comission me to make one for you!

Price ranges vary, of course, depending on what you want, just like anything else, but here's a rough guide.

Step One - Availablity

See if I am open for comission by checking the note at the top of this page. If it says I am closed, then I am closed. ;)

Step Two - E-mail

E-mail me at velvetrose@rocketmail.com with your request. Please have a detailed explanation of what you want or, even better, a picture. I will reply to all e-mails within a day or two in most cases. Please use the pricing guide below to figure out what it is you want.

Step Three - Payment

When a price has been agreed upon, I require half of the final price (not including shipping) to start. The reason for this is because I sometimes need to buy the baits and/or hair and I need funds in my Paypal account to do this. I accept Paypal payments of any kid EXCEPT E-checks. In rare cases, I will accept snail-mailed US POstal Money Orders. Under no circumstances will I accept personal checks.

Step Four - Assembly

Once your initial payment has cleared, I get to work. Under normal circumstances it takes me a little over a week to complete a custom IF I have the materials on hand. It may take up to two weeks if I need to find a bait on ebay or buy hair. Please keep in mind I do have a life outside of custom ponies and real life can ocassionally get in the way. If I am ill or if I have a deadline elsewhere, that takes precedence. I will, however, keep you informed of such occurences. And, as always, feel free to e-mail me with questions or concerns.

Step Five - Completion

Once I am finished your pony, I will e-mail you digital pictures of her from all angles. Upon your satisfaction, you paypal or snail-mail me the remaining half of the total price along with the shipping fee (Paypal is, again, much preferred). Immediately upon receiving the final payment, I ship your pony out to you! It is common courtesy to let me know when your pony arrives.

Note - All prices are in US Dollars

Confused yet? OK, here we go...

Base Price - This is the fee just to get me started.

Bait Price - This is basically dependent on what kind of pony you want. G3s are the easiet to come by, but I have to buy them new and am restricted by what's available in stores right now. G3 Earth ponies and Pegasus ponies are everywhere. The babies are a little harder to find. Hasbro JUST released adult unicorns. And, as right now, there are only two baby pegasus ponies, one is part of a very expensive playset and the other is released in a much cheaper set with an adult pegasus. Once adult unis and baby pegs are more widely available, the price of their baits will go down. Now, let's hope they start making baby unis!

G1s are harder to come by than G3s, but they are often cheaper. I am limited by what I have on hand or can find. I often have a few on hand. They often require full body paints since they frequently have marks that do not come off. If you want a specific G1 bait (say you want a Twinkle Eyed pony with green eyes, that limits me to about two or three specific ponies) I may have to go on ebay and find the pony in question. Big Brothers are one of the hardest baits to get, and often the most requested as well, so they are a bit pricier.

Deflocking applies only to G1 So Soft ponies, the ones covered in that soft fur. One very popular pose, the rearing pose, was only used for three ponies, all So Softs. In order to bait this pony, I have to take all that fuzz off. In order to to do that I have to spend a good deal of time soaking the pony in acetone (which stinks) and using tooth picks and Q-tips to get all the fuzz and glue off! It's very time consuming, but it can be done!

Note : If you want to supply the bait yourself, that's great! You just have to ship her to me and there will be no charge for a bait.

Body Color - If you want your pony to remain the same color that the bait is, there's no charge, obviously. This is a common option for G3s since they are usually new and have no marks. G1s, however, often have unremovable marks or cancer spots. If these can be covered by the symbols, not a problem. Otherwise, they need a full body paint. A full body paint means I have to I have to paint the pony all over with several thinned-down coats of paint. My method yields few, if any, brushstrokes.

A pearly coating is an option over either a base body color or a full body paint; it makes the pony look shimmery and shiny.

Dyeing is easiest, but is only applicable if I am making the pony darker than the base body color. It also seems to work much better on G3s than on G1s

A gradient is where the extremities of the pony (nose and legs) are dyed a different color, like a Siamese cat. Again, this works best on a pony that has NOT been painted since the dye is very hot and can melt of bubble the paint.

Unicorn Add-on is when I take the horn off of an already exisiting unicorn bait and sculpt it onto an earth pony or pegasus pony. I use a very strong apoxie to attach them. These ponies MUST be painted in order to make the horn, apoxie, and head all match. The price is a little expensive because I have to cannibalize another bait for the horn. Usually I use that horrid Moondancer pose since it's so fugly.

Symbols - A simple base symbol can be either on both sides of the pony or only on one side. A detailed symbol is one that has lots of a little details or linework involved. Twice As Fancy symbols are all over the pony and looks best if they are kept simple. Glittery symbols are completely or partially filled in with very fine microglitter, much like the original G1 Rainbow ponies. I can also incorporate Swarovski crystals into your design if you want a bit of added sparkle!

Hair - There are three kinds of hair that I currently use for customs. None is any "better" than the other, although they all offer different textures and options.

Saran hair, also called katsilk, is what Mattel uses on Barbie. It's very straight and silky and very soft. It does NOT curl easily and needs to be conditioned to prevent flyaways. It is available in a wide range of natural and fantasy colors. This is the most expensive option only because it is the most expensive hair.

Nylon hair is what Hasbro uses for My Little Ponies and for Bratz dolls. Left straight it is very glossy and shiny, without the slightly greasy feel of saran. It also takes a curl beautifully. There is an expanding range of colors available and can be matched to just about any color of hair that Hasbro used on ponies. (This is a good option if you want a baby pony for an adult that has no Hasbro-made baby.)

Kanekalon hair is very frizzy and fluffy when left untreated; however, out of all of the hair, it takes curls the best. This hair has a slightly rough texture and is the least expensive of the lot. Color choices are somewhat limited.

Extra long hair is for Rapunzels for the most part. The hair has to be plugged a different way and it's very time-consuming and uses twice the amount of hair.

Tinsel is an add-on to regular hair of any kind and gives the pony a bit more glamour and shimmer.

Note - Again, if you want to supply the hair yourself, feel free! However, you must be certain that there is enough hair for me to rehair your pony.

Plastic wings are exactly that and can be painted to your specifications. I do, however, find that simple designs work best. Whether or not I can do them is somewhat dependent on whether ot not I have the plastic handy. The same applies to feathered wings since I still need the plastic as a base.

Mardi Gras beads are little tiny, pony-sized bead necklaces that look like the necklaces thrown around in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. These are made from real Mardi Gras necklaces and, as such, I have a limited amount.

A pony mask is mostly for Phantom of the Opera customs, though they could be used for other purposes. To make them, I use the head from another pony, which is why they are so expensive. I basically have to cannibalize another bait pony for their face. How macabre... I feel like Hannibal Lecter.

Feathered wings are the same as the plastic wings except I glue marabou feathers onto it. The feathers are from several feather boas and I have tons of colors. No, they are NOT real bird feathers, as far as I know.

Twinkle Eyes are swarovski crystals glued over a pony's painted eye. This fee does NOT apply if the bait I am using already has twinkle eyes. These are very useful for making babies to the already exisiting adult TE ponies.

Shipping - I ship using USPS Priority Shipping. Delivery is in 2-3 days and is only slightly more expensive than Parcel Post (which takes up to 9 days). If you want insurance, it's another $1.50, but I find that largely unneccessary. For places outside of the US, I use USPS Global Priority Shipping and the price will depend on where in the wide world you are.
