Old Updates 1: Third

8/20/99: The Sun shines so brightly.
Gulp. I should have checked Fresco a couple of days ago. I don't have time right now to clarify, but the link below will answer all your questions. I will rant later.
Offical Update

Still want more, here's the offical script from Fresco. I guess you don't need me anymore. I have printed the script out at 35 pages, have you?

Ender's Game script!!!!

We have much to celebrate. Dance, read and enjoy. I will continue to update, oh yes I will.
P.S. Osment, you were just a little too late, that's all. What I mean is, Card talks about Lloyd and Star Wars.

8/12/99: Please, end this madness.
Honestly, sometimes I just don’t get it. Do they want us to go to this movie or not? In an e-mail that I received from a long time Ender reader and Depository regular, I was alerted that earlier this week Z-Score, the movie news publication, had news about Ender’s Game: The Movie.
On Tuesday, Z-Score’s news section had an article that CGI animated movies are the future of Hollywood. In this article, it listed films that were going to be computer animated. The three were Final Fantasy, Thunderbirds 2000, and Ender’s Game! Ender’s Game? Why was I not informed earlier?
If this news is true, I now know why humans cry. At the same time, this logic does make some sense. Obviously, the most exciting part of Ender’s Game is the null gravity battle room sequences - most especially Dragon Army. Trying to choreograph 40 or more children in the simulated weightlessness would be extremely difficult and costly. Imagine trying to film these children as they hang from strings in front of a bluescreen and make it look somewhat realistic. As we know, Card and crew seem to be pretty frugal about this movie and if they can cut cost, they will. However, it is certainly plausible that this is the new trend in movies. With Final Fantasy being released next summer, only time will tell if Card will really follow through with this idea. The good news is that I would take this kind of news with a grain of salt as it doesn’t really seem to be consistent with the other news I have gathered over the last few months.

8/9/99: Like I said....
Hello Yahoo people, if this is your first time at the depository, thanks for coming. Well, "The Sixth Sense" made 25.8 million dollars on its opening weekend. This figure is going to surprise a lot of people...including me. If I were Jake Lloyd, I would really get worried now; Card desperately needs a child actor that can actually convery emotional and dramatic response...and Osment is the man. Now, that Osment just jumped to an (A-/B+) star in Hollywood, its only a matter of time now.
Also, over the weekend, I have received some major info on Ender's Game: The Movie. I need to check it out a little. Come back later this week, it may surprise you.
Finally, for the audience that uses IMDB to get to this page, here is the yahoo proof of purchase.

8/6/99: A New Ender?
Lately, there has been less and less actual print about Lloyd playing Ender. The people I talk to say that Lloyd's performance in Star Wars did little to convince the powers that be that little man Jake is a serious actor that has the range necessary for Ender. Yesterday, I got an e-mail from DKNino@aol.com, a regular at the Depository. It seems that Lloyd may have new competition for the role of Ender Wiggin.
Haley Joel Osment is the main character in the new Bruce Willis movie, "The Sixth Sense." Most people may remember this kid from being Forrest Gump jr. in "Forrest Gump". While he may not have the name power of Lloyd, he certainly has some big critics behind him. Roger Ebert's opinion of Osment's performance in "The Sixth Sense" is everything a person would want from Ender:

"This isn't a role for a cute kid who can stand there and look solemn in reaction shots. There are fairly involved dialogue passages between Willis and Osment that require good timing, reactions and the ability to listen. Osment is more than equal to them." Comments Carrie Rickey in The Philadelphia Inquirer: "He carries the movie, a lyrical and eerie meditation upon loss and hurt and healing, like Atlas swatting away ghosts with his free hand. So transparent is Osment as an actor, and so rare, that the pain on his face stabs you in the heart."
If there is enough buzz about Osment's performance, look for him to quickly pass Mannequin Skywalker for the role of a lifetime, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin!

8/2/99: The First Review is in.
August 1st arrived yesterday and left today. But yesterday was a little different than most days. "Ender's Shadow" finally made the media rounds. Below is the CNN review. In the author's review, he mentions websites speculating on Jake Lloyd as Ender and this being a springboard to the movie. This author completes me. We begin a new era.

CNN Review: Very Positive

7/29/99: Ain’t nothing like a real thing
Cast Info: I apologize to the entire Ender’s Game community for such a long inactive period. Frankly, there has been very little information forthcoming about the new movie. From a interview with Orson Scott Card that I found buried at his official site, there is no confirmed casting of anyone except Jake Lloyd as Ender. However, I have seen Lloyd in a couple of interviews when he was promoting Star Wars, and when they asked him about his future plans, I never heard him refer to Ender’s Game. I am assuming he is still Ender, but now I am wondering, with the pretty steady backlash against him, if Card might change that to someone with a little more personality. We can only hope. If anyone has heard Lloyd ever refer to Ender’s Game during an interview, send me an e-mail and let me know.

From that same interview, Card speculated about the cast and I am not happy with some of his decisions. First, there is strong speculation that Graff will be played by a woman to have more balance in the movie (and to help its box office chance). That’s fine, I can handle that, but this woman better be ice cold, heartless, and not act like Ender’s mommy. So when Card said that he was thinking of Rosey O’Donnell or some other female comedian for the part, I was shocked! I am hoping that will change. At the bottom of this page, is my page devoted to the cast….who’s in, who’s out and who’s exist in my dream cast.

Ender's Shadow: Hopefully, the new "Ender’s Shadow" book will get the Ender’s Game community rolling again. I have already seen pretty decent advertising for the book at the big chain bookstores. Look for this special $3.99 edition of Ender's Game in bookstores now! It comes with a $4.00 mail-in rebate when you buy Ender's Shadow by 9/30/99

Before I sign off for the day, I would like to thank those people who have written me about Ender’s Game news or just their appreciation for the book. In the future, I hope to post some these comments and stories (with permission of course). Give credit where its due.

4/15/99: The real Ender's Game Sequel
The minute you finish "Ender's Game", you wish you could read it again for the first time. Now, after all these years, Orson Scott Carrd is going to give us this chance. I snatched this from the official site:

Now a new novel in the Ender's series, titled Ender's Shadow, will be appearing in August 1999 from TOR -- but it's not a sequel. Instead, it returns to the events of Ender's Game and views them from the point of view of another character, a street urchin named Bean. As with Rashomon or The Alexandria Quartet, Card discovers a new story in the midst of the old, when seeing it through other eyes.

Chapter One of "Ender's Shadow"

4/14/99: Ender's Game: The Movie
Quite simply, Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" is my favorite book. No, its not my favorite book from my childhood, it is my favorite book of all time. I have read it more times than I can remember and each time I do, I enjoy it even more. For those that are not familiar with the book -dread the thought- Ender is a child who has been employed by the government to kill an entire race of aliens. He is a genius amoung geniuses that does not enjoy killing and winning, but happens to be extremely good at it. Ender wants just to be a kid and we read as Ender overcomes his nightmare of a childhood. I have waited years for this book to become movie. And not just a movie, a movie that would be so good, it would be talked about and read about for years to come. I was aware that Card was working on the screenplay in secret for years to try to stay true to the book and make it adaptable for a two hour showing. Each time I would go to IMDB it would have a little ???? meaning "We don't know what is going on." I checked again the other day and it said "2000". Yes! Immediately, I had to see who would be playing Ender. This person would have to smart, likeable, and to truly understand the role, would have to understand every line he spoke. When I saw the name, my heart burned out like a Hazelwood Central High School Teacher. The good news at least it is not Freddie Prince. Thank God for that. Jake Lloyd. That fruit cake from Phantom Menace will be Ender. Now, maybe he will be okay in Star Wars because he just has to look scared and say ,"Will I ever see you again?". I mean is anyone going to that movie to see that kid? However, he is totally wrong for Ender's Game. Quite Simply, I think the kid is an idiot. I saw "Jingle all the Way" and I don't know what he was doing in that movie. He really didn't say any lines he just shouted all this dialogue and jumped up and down a lot. Please allow age to have straightened him out. This kid is going to have scenes where he kills people, longs for freedom, and thinks about the pain and triumph in his life. Lloyd will just make that puppy dog expression of his and say, "Will I ever have to kill people again?" Oh Brother. However, the problem even goes beyond that. What was Card thinking? Ender's Game will soon be called Lloyd's Post Star Wars mimi-project. There is no doubt in my mind that to compensate for Lloyd's inability to act and play roles, this movie will become just another special effects show boat. Ender's Game is of course about relationships and obstacles. Well, at least Lloyd can't go back and destroy the book that I care so much about. It might be sunny outside my window, but a cloud be raining on my head. All in all, while Ender Wiggin is my hero, Jake Lloyd might be my curse.
