The 1891 Prophecies of Joseph Smith FULFILLED in the Bahá'í Faith
"There are those of the rising generation who shall not taste death til Christ comes." (Joseph Smith, General Conference, 6 April 1843, quoted in The Words of Joseph Smith, p.179)
"And the Lord shall be red in his apparel like him that treadeth the wine vat,..." (D&C 133:48, RLDS D&C 108:9c)
This is going to be perhaps the most important article you will ever read!
On February 14th, 1843, Joseph Smith said:
"The Holy Ghost is now [1843] in a state of probation which if he should perform in righteousness he may pass through the same or a similar course of things that the Son has." (Joseph Smith, The Words of Joseph Smith, p. 245; Sabbath address, Nauvoo, 27 August 1843)The term "state of probation" comes from The Book of Mormon, and refers to a mortal life on Earth (1 Nephi 10:21, Nephi 2:2,30, and 33:9, Mormon 9:28). Joseph Smith said that "now" (1843) the Holy Ghost was in "a state of probation" somewhere on planet Earth.
Where was He? Who was He?
In 1843 a Baptist named William Miller said he had calculated Bible prophecies and came to the conclusion that Christ would return in the year 1843 (he made a recalculation later than put it at 1844). Joseph Smith inquired of the LORD about this, and was told that if he lived until he was 85 years (1890-91) he would "see the Face of the Son of Man" (D&C 130). Joseph Smith would turn 85 on Dec. 23, 1890. For all but 9 days, he would be 85 years old in the year 1891.
The LORD had told Joseph the Seer:
"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that bring glad tidings of good things, and that say unto Zion: Behold, thy God reineth! As the dews of Carmel, so shall the knowledge of God descend upon them." (D&C 128:19)In 1843 Joseph Smith made the following prophecy:
"I was once praying earnestly upon the subject, and a voice said unto me, My son, if thou livest till thou art 85 years of age, thou shalt see the Face of the Son of Man--I was left to draw my own conclusions concerning this & took the liberty to conclude that if I did live till that time He would make His appearance or I shall go where He is--I prophesy in the name of the Lord God--& let it be written, that the Son of Man will not come in the heavens till I am 85 years old, 48 years hence or about 1890." (Diary of Joseph Smith, April 6, 1843, quoted in The Revelations of Joseph Smith, p.345)48 years "hence" of 1843 is 1891 (1843+48=1891).
In 1835, Joseph Smith had a vision from the Holy Spirit that the coming of the LORD would be in the year 1891. For all save a few days, Joseph Smith would be aged 85 in the year 1891. In the History of the Church for February 14, 1835:
"President Smith then stated that the meeting had been called, because God commanded it; and it was made known to him by vision and by the Holy Spirit***and it was the will of God that those who went to Zion, with a determination to lay down their lives, if necessary, should be ordained to the ministry, and go forth to prune the vineyard for the last time, or the coming of the Lord, which was nigh--even fifty-six years should wind-up the scene." (D.H.C. 2:182)In the Index (vol. 7) of the History of the Church , under "Second Coming", we find the following: "Joseph indicates would be in fifty-six years V2:182".
The early Brethren believed that Christ would come and establish His Kingdom in the year 1891; based upon this 1835 vision and the 1843 prophecy of Joseph Smith.
A few questions for you!
Q1. When will the Holy Ghost, Who is a Spirit-Man, come down to Earth to get a body?
Q2. Will the Holy Ghost perform some great Divine Mission on Earth, or merely come to Earth to get a body and work at some ordinary job or career?
Q3. Will the Holy Ghost be some great Prophet, or just an ordinary human being like everybody else?
Q4. Was Joseph Smith the incarnation of the Holy Ghost, or will the Holy Ghost be some other Man?
Q5. Do the 1891 prophecies of Joseph Smith (i.e. the Son of Man would come in the year 1891 in red apparel), have to do with the Second Coming of Jesus, or with the coming Incarnation (embodiment) of the Holy Ghost?
I would like to bare you my testimony of the following: I. Holy Ghost has already come down to get a body! He was born in Persian (Iran) in the year 1817, and died in 1892 in the Holy Land. He was a direct descendant of King David of Israel and King Cyrus of Persia.
II. He was not an ordinary man, but a Great Prophet Who wrote a number of divinely-inspired books and epistles! Today, He has over 7 million followers worldwide!
III. He was born with the name Mirza Húsein-Ali Núri (Arabic: "Prince Beauty Exalted of Light"). He had "Light" as a "covering" (sur-name). He took the name-title of BAHÁ'U'LLÁH (baw-haw-ohL-LAW); which in Arabic means "The Glory of God".
IV. He announced to the world-at-large that He was the promised "Son of Man" in the year 1891, wearing red apparel, on the northern slopes of Mount Carmel, in Palestine (now Israel).
V. His Eldest Son, 'Abdu'l-Baha (awb-dull baw-HAW), Whom many considered to be the reincarnation of Jesus, appeared in Salt Lake City in September of 1912, and knocked on the East Door of the Salt Lake Temple; wearing the glorious red robe of His Father.
Baha'u'llah (baw-haw-ohL-LAW) was a Great Prophet, higher and greater than other prophets (He was the Holy Ghost --the One Who inspired the prophets). He is the Founder of the Baha'i Faith; a world-wide independent world religion with over 7 million Baha'is (baw-highzz) in over 120 countries.
The Baha'i Faith is headquartered at the Baha'i World Center, on the northern slopes of Mount Carmel, in Haifa, Israel. The Holy Shrine of The Báb on Mount Carmel (right).
Q. What is the Baha'i Faith?
A. The Baha'i Faith is the Millennial Kingdom of God on Earth in embryo. Early Mormon apostles referred believed it would be established, somehwere on this planet, in the year 1891 They referred to it as "THE KINGDOM".
In 1891, in General Conference, Elder Charles W. Penrose (a Mormon apostle) said:
"Did not all the Prophets of old look forward to such a time, and did not our Savior send His disciples to proclaim that THE KINGDOM was at hand? He gave a great many parables concerning THE KINGDOM. He compared it, among other things, to a grain of mustard seed that grew and became the greatest tree on earth. That is, commencing with a small beginning, but, like all God's works, gradually growing and developing until fully complete. The prophet Daniel saw it as the 'little stone', cut out of the mountain without hands, which smote the great image and shattered its remnants to the four winds, and then became a great mountain and filled the whole earth, which is our birthplace according to the flesh and our future home and heaven. The earth fulfills the law of its creation and shall therefore be glorified and become a fit dwelling place for the sanctified, fit for the Presence of God and clothed with His glory. the Church and THE KINGDOM are not identical, although they are closely connected. In the Church is the Gospel of the Kingdom. It is a preparation for that Divine Government. IT will not be fully established until Christ comes, who is the King. As members of the Church we are commanded to be subject to the governments under which we live, as long as they exist, for 'the powers that be are ordained of God,' but we are approaching a time when all things on earth must give way to the HEAVENLY KINGDOM. The kingdom of this world are to become the KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS CHRIST. Let us prepare ourselves for the events that are coming, and when we pray: 'Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,' do our part in the work to prepare for its advent." (Collected Discourses 2:188-9, emphasis added)In the year 1890, in Conference, Elder B. H. Roberts (Church historian and Seventy) said:
"Before another General Conference shall be reached we shall have entered upon the year 1891. In the Book of Doctrines and Covenants, section 130, Joseph Smith was promised that if he lived until 1891, he would see the face of the Son of Man. On February 14th, 1835, at a meeting where certain Elders, they were told by Jospeh that they were called to go forth to prune the vineyard for the last time, before the coming of Christ, even 56 years should wind-up the scene. 1835 plus 56 years also brings us to the year 1891! These circumstances have called the Saints to believe that some great epock will open at that time--the year following the present [1891]. My faith in the matter is whatever the Lord has in mind to accomplish in that year will be performed. It may be something, however, that would scarcely create a ripple. The organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was one of the greatest events in the history of the world. It was organized with six members, and but little was known concerning it even in the neighborhood where it occurred, at the time. It may be that the greatness of what shall occur in 1891 will not be comprehended until succeeding years." (Collected Discourses 2:105-6)Many of the Mormons in 1890 expected Jesus to return in the clouds of the sky in 1891; with thousands of angels in tow, spitting fire-balls upon the wicked nations of the earth and wiping Jackson County clean of inhabitants so that they could return and build the city of New Jerusalem. Some even prepared hand-carts for the return journey. Elder Roberts told them not to expect such a dramatic occurance, but--like the organization of the Church at Farmington New York in the year 1830--what was going to happen in the year 1891 may even be unnoticed by those right next to the event!
Joseph Smith prophecied in the name of the LORD that the Son of Man would UNVEIL HIS FACE in the years 1891! IF even one of Joseph Smith's prophecies were false then he MUST be dismissed as a FALSE PROPHET and the Church false as well! There is no middle-ground! No excuses or explain-aways can be accepted!
The LORD toldMoses that if a prophet appears and prophesies a thing, and that thing come not to pass, then the LORD did NOT send that man, and he is a FALSE PROPHET! The LORD said:
"When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, you need not be afraid of him" (Deuteronomy 18:22)In 1886, Mormon apostle Moses Thatcher declared before a gathering of Mormons in the Salt Lake Tabernacle:
"Our deliverance will be within 5 years; the time indicated by Joseph's [Feb. 14, 1832] prophecy will be February 14, 1891." (Salt Lake Tribune, 10 April 1886)In 1887, the Mormon Church printed an distributed a book by Elder Robert Smith (a 2nd cousin of Joseph Smith), to be "used by teachers in Sunday Schools." Smith wrote:
Now, we will prove by the prophet Joseph Smith that the same year, 1891, is the commencement of the reign of righteousness. In Section 130, Doctrine and Covenants, Joseph was told that if he lived to be 85 years old he would live to see the scene wound up or the Redeemer on the earth. He was born December 23rd, 1805, and if we give him the 85 years, we could not count the year 1805, we should have to count 1806, as the year 1805 was mostly gone before he was born, therefore, we have 1806 and 85, making 1891; again in the year 1835 Joseph was told positively that 56 years would wind up the scene, which we believe was the reign of iniquity and transgression: 56 and 1835 are 1891. Thus we have abundant proof that that year will begin the reign of righteousness, and God's people be acknowledged, for the earth is to be given to them. He has said: 'Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.'" (A Series of Lectures on the Fulfillment of Prophecy, 1887, pp.39-40)On January 1st 1891, Wilford Woodruff (the 4th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) wrote in is diary:
"Jan 1, 1891. This is New Year's Day, and the year that has been looked upon by many as one of the more important years in the world." (Jounal of Wilford Woodruff, Jan. 1, 1891)Tens of thousand of Latter-day Saints, from Mormon apostles to rank-and-file Mormons, believed that the "Son of Man" was coming "in red apparel" in the year 1891 to establish "THE KINGDOM".
What happened?
When Jesus failed to appear in the sky over Salt Lake City in 1891, riding upon a cloud, the Mormons said: "The Lord has delayed His coming!"
Truly did Jesus say, "that evil servant shall say in his heart, My Lord delayeth His coming." (Matt. 14:48)
Truly did the LORD say unto Joseph the Seer: "...and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth." (D&C 45:26)
There are over 7 MILLION people on earth today that believe that the Son of Man (Holy Ghost Incarnate) did NOT delay His coming, but returned in His Glory and as a thief in the night in the year 1891!
Joseph Smith's Plan To Go To The Holy Land
In 1840 Joseph Smith sent Orson Hyde to the Holy Land to dedicate the land for the return of the Jews. When Orson Hyde returned to Nauvoo he told Joseph Smith of the fabulous white wines he had drank in the Holy Land. Joseph Smith prophecied that "IF" he be allowed to live he would "drink white wine" with Hyde in the Holy Land. (Diary of Joseph Smith, Jan. 20, 1843, LDS Church Archives)
Joseph Smith made plans for living and dying. He planned to make his brother Hyrum President of the Church, and travel to the Holy Land. In 1890-91 the Church had a few Armenian Mormon families in Haifa, as well as two missionaries of the Turkish Mission. Had Joseph lived he would have been there as well.
In the year 1891, while on Mount Carmel, Bahá'u'lláh wrote:
"The Voice of the Son of Man is calling aloud from the sacred veil: 'Here am I, here am I, O God, My God!' The Father hath come, and that which ye were promised in the Kingdom of God is fulfilled." (The Words of Bahá'u'lláh, p.104)In the year 1891 Bahá'u'lláh went from Akka to Haifa. He pitched His tent on on Mount Carmel and recited His Tablet of Carmel; which was His Great Annoucement to the World:"Verily I say, this is the Day in which mankind can behold the Face and hear the Voice, of the Promised One." (Gleanings 10:vii)
"He Who is the King of Kings hath appeared, arrayed in His most wonderous glory, and is summoning you unto Himself, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting." (Gleanings 211:cv)
"All glory be to this Day, the Day which the fragrances of mercy have been wafted over all created things, a Day so blessed that past ages and centuries can never hope to rival it, a Day in which the Contenance of the Ancient of Days hath turned towards His holy seat. Thereupon the voice of all created things, and beyond them those of the Concourse on high, were heard calling aloud: "Haste Thee, O Carmel, for lo, the light of the Countenance of God, the Ruler of the Kingdom of Names and Fashioner of the heavens, hath been lifted upon thee.'***CALL OUT TO ZION, O Carmel, and announce the joyful tidings: He that was hidden from mortal eyes is come!" (Bahá'u'lláh--The Word Made Flesh, p.64)The Face of the Son of Man Is Not The Face Of Jesus
Prince Husayn Alí of Nur was of royal Persian and Jewish blood. He was a descendant of ancient Persian Kings; one of whom married a Jewish princess of the House of David. Bahá'u'lláh was a descendant of King Cyrus of Persia and King David of Israel. He was born in the year 1817.
In 1843 He became the follower of Siyyid Muhammad Alí' Shirazi; a merchant in southern Iran who claimed to be the promised Imam Mahdi ("Rightly-Guided Leader") of Islam. He called Himself "al-Báb'u'lláh" ("The Gate of God"). He is known today simply as "The Báb" ("baub"). The Imam Mehdi would lead true Muslims to Jesus when He returned! The Báb gave Prince Husayn Alí the title of Bahá'u'lláh; which in Arabic means "The Glory of God". The Báb wrote epistles to His disciples where He said that One greater than Himself would come, and His name would be "B" and "H" (Arabic: "Bah" and "Hah"=BAHA which means "GLORY").
The symbol of The Báb was a five-pointed star. The word "Báb" means "gate" but also "five" in Arabic. His followers the Bábis would greet each other by embracing on five points on their body and whispering in each other's ear "Allah'u'Abha" ("God is Most Glorious"). The Báb gave The Bábis many new laws. When The Bábis made pilgrimages to Mecca they would carry their shawl over their right sholder, instead of their left sholder as Muslims do. The Bábis wore white turbans and often white clothes to distinguish themselves from Muslims (moose-lemz). Unlike Muslim women, Bábí women only veiled themselves during prayer. They prayed in circles instead of rows as the Muslims did.
The Báb was a "Siyyid" (descendant of the Prophet Muhammad) and wore a green turban (only siyyids wore green turbans); the color being symbolic of the green fig leafs of Paradise.
The Báb claimed He was the "return" of the Imam Mehdi; the young boy who fell down a well near Qom, Iran, in 126 A.H. The Bab declared He was the return of the Imam Mehdi ("Rightly-Guided Leader") in the Muslim year 1260 A.H.; 1000 lunar years from 126 A.H. when the Imam Mehdi disappeared. The Shi'ite Muslims believed that the Imam Mehdi would return to establish "the True Faith". The Báb claimed that His chief disciple, Mollah Husein (a different person from Mirza Husein-Ali Bahá'u'lláh), was the "return" of the Prophet Muhammad. Human souls do not return to this material world, but the Prophets do not have human souls. They are the Incarnations of the Names and Attributes of ALLÁH (The Essence of God). In the Holy Qu'ran, ALLÁH has 99 Names and Attributes. The Names are also Attributes. One of the Name/Attributes of ALLÁH is Al-Qayyoom ("The Self-Subsisting"). The Hebrew name for "The Self-Subsisting" is Yahweh (Jehovah). The Essence (ALLÁH) does not incarnate, His Names/Attributes do.
The Orthodox Muslims considered The Bábis to be heretics, and The Báb a "false prophet" and a "false mahdi". Muslims considered Muhammad to be the last of the prophets for all eternity. No prophets or holy books would come after him, but The Bábis believed that The Báb was a prophet just like Muhammad, and that He wrote Holy Books as well. To the Muslims this was UTTER blasphemy! The Bábis were heretics and blasphemers deserving of death! Mullas (Muslim clergymen) had thousands of Babis--men, women, and children--were slaughtered. Entire Babi families had their throats cut in their own homes. Babis were taken to the marketplaces and stoned to death, or they had the souls of their feet cut off and told to walk over fields of stone. Sometimes they had cuts made in their skin and lighted candles placed into them. Over 20,000 Bábís became martyrs.
Two Bábí teenagers whose parents had been killed on orders of the Shah (King) of Persia then attempted to assassinate him, but their pistols carried only bird-shot. The wounded Shah was infuriated, and called for the extermination of all Babis. The Báb Himself was arrested and imprisoned. He was declared a blasphemer and heretic and was sentenced to a firing-squad in Tabriz, Iran. Before His death a miracle occurred.
The Muslims clerics did not want a Muslim regiment to execute The Báb; because one of the sayings of the Imams (successors of Muhammad) said that Muslims would kill the Imam Mahdi. The Báb claimed to be the Imam Mahdi. The Muslim clerics did not want The Bábis claiming that The Báb's death fulfilled Shi'ite Muslim prophecy. So, they persuaded the representatives of the Shah to ask for a Christian regiment to execute The Báb (at that time the Persian empire included most of Armenia, which was Christian). An Armenian regiment stationed in Tabriz was brought in for the execution; 750 rifles.
The Báb was bound with ropes and suspended from a ledge. Thousands of people looked on. The command was given and the Christian Armenian regiment fired their 750 rifles at The Báb as He was bound with ropes. When the smoke cleared (this was before smokeless powder) The Báb was gone.
The only thing left were the ropes; which had burn marks of having been severed by the bullets! The crowd thought it a miracle, but the Mollahs (Muslim clerics) convinced the crowd that the 750 riflemen had purposely missed their mark. The Báb was unharmed. He was found later back in His cell, finishing His last instructions to His disciples. He was taken out again, but the Christian Armenian regiment refused to fire again; thinking that God had shown them a sign. So, a Muslim regiment was brought in, and this time the bullets found their mark. The ancient Muslim prophecy that the Imam Mehdi (the Promised One of Shi'ite Islam) would be killed by Shi'ite Muslims was fulfilled!
The remains of The Báb were later sealed in a air-tight lead coffin, and His remains were later taken to Baghdad, then Turkey, and finally to Mount Carmel in the Holy Land where He was buried. His Holy Shrine exists today on the northern slopes of Mount Carmel.
The Lord Shall Come In Red Apparel
Being of royal blood Bahá'u'lláh and His family were spared exectution; although He was imprisoned for 4 months in the Black Pit of Tehran. After release He and several thousand Babis were exiled to Baghdad. Muslim clergymen preached against The Bábis as heretics in Baghdad as well, and mobs burned the house and clothes of Bahá'u'lláh. The Bábis made for Him clothes out of red Persian drapes, and from then on Bahá'u'lláh wore only red apparel. The LORD told Joseph the Seer:
"And the Lord shall be red in his apparel like him that treadeth the wine vat,..." (D&C 133:48, RLDS D&C 108:9c)In 1863, Bahá'u'lláh announced to The Bábis that He was the B and H promised by The Báb. He was in fact THE FATHER Who had come down to Earth! While on earth Jesus said "The Father is in me, and I am in the Father," (John 14:9). "Jesus Christ" was not one Divine Being, but actually two Divine Beings in "one" body! He was literally "the Father and the Son". Jesus was the WORD of God incarnate. When He was baptized by John the Baptist, the Holy Ghost (Spirit of Truth) "overshadowed" Him (entered His body), and Jesus became "CHRIST".
"CHRIST" means the Father and the Son! This is what The Book of Mormon teaches (Mosiah chapter 15); that "Jesus Christ" was a combination of the Father (Spirit-Holy Ghost) and the Son (flesh).
Two thousand years ago "Jesus Christ" literally had the Holy Ghost "in" Him. The Holy Ghost possessed Him. That is why He was called "Christ". The word "Christ" is Greek for Messiah, and the word Messiah means "covered with oil": oil being the symbol of the Holy Spirit.
"Jesus Christ" was the Father and the Son in "one" body. But They would not return in "one" body!
Baha'u'llah (baw-haw-ohL-LAW) first revealed Who He was in Beghdad in 1863, to the followers of The Bab who were called Bábís (baw-beez). Most of The Bábis accept Bahá'u'lláh, but some did not. The Muslim clergy told lies about the Bahá'ís, and the Turkish government decided to exile Bahá'u'lláh and the Bahá'ís again; first to Adrianople, and then finally to the prison city of Akka, in the Holy Land.
Bahá'u'lláh lived in an apartment in a mansion, and the entrance of His apartment did not have a door, but a white veil.
In the year 1890 a Protestant missionary in Haifa, Palestine, the Rev. Henry Careless, head of Bahá'u'lláh and His claims and wrote this:
"The Bahá'ís are very numerous in this city [Haifa]. They contend that Christ has already come again a second time in this present man, Bahá'u'lláh, living in Akka--the same Spirit of God incarnate in all the prophets before Christ, then in Christ, then in Muhammad, now is incarnate in Bahá'u'lláh." (Studies in Babi and Bahá'í History 1:68-9)Also in 1890, a British professor of Middle-East Studies at Cambridge University named Edward G. Browne visited Bahá'u'lláh in Akka. He had travelled to Persia to study the religion of The Báb. He was told of the great miracle that occurred when The Báb was martyred in Tabriz, Iran. He was also told that most of The Bábis (followers of The Báb) now were called Bahá'ís (followers of Baha), and believed that Bahá'u'lláh was Christ returned IN "The Glory of God". Prof. Browne was fascinated, and was determined to meet Bahá'u'lláh and see His Face himself.
In April of 1890 Prof. Browne arrived in the Turkish prison city of Akka, 15 miles north of Haifa. He came to see the Face of Bahá'u'lláh. Bahá'u'lláh kept Himself hidden from the eyes of men behind a white veil that hang over the entrance of His apartment. Prof. Browne was taken to Him, and in 1891 published this account:
"...my conductor paused for a moment while I removed my shoes. Then with a quick movement of the hand, he withdrew and, as I passed, replaced the curtain (veil); and I found myself in a large apartment,....The Face of Him Whom I gazed upon I can never forget, though I cannot describe it. Those piercing eyes seemed to read one's very soul; power and authority sat on that ample brow; which the deep lines on the forehead and Face implied an age which the jet-black hair and beard flowing down in indistinguishable luxuriance almost to the waist seemed to belie. No need to ask in Whose Presence I stood, as I bowed myself before One Who is the object of devotion and love which kings might envy and emperors sigh for in vain!" (Bahá'u'lláh--The Word Made Flesh, p.62)
Bahá'u'lláh sat in a room in a mansion behind a white veil. He became known as "The Veiled One". People who wished to enter the Presence of Bahá'u'lláh had to pass through this white veil; usually after embracing upon the five points as they did as followers of The Báb. The Bahá'í poet Hafiz wrote the following (this rhymes in Persian):
"Behind a veil sits that moon-browed beauty; In the Muslim year 1308 A.H. (1890-91) Bahá'u'lláh came froth from behind that white veil; making His Great Announcement to the world via the Tablet of Carmel. After that time Bahá'u'lláh no longer kept behind the veil, but showed His Face to the world, and announced that the promised Kingdom of Heaven had come. He called His Cause "The Celestial Kingdom".
He has rent asunder the veils of the world,
Yet sits behind a veil--
And none approach Him save His brothers,
And certain favoured followers.
But from behind that veil
He issues forth letters,
Epistles, and books in reply
To men's questions and petitions."
(A Traveller's Narrative, p.355)
He wrote:
"Blessed is the soul that hath been raised to life through My quickening breath and hath gained admittance into My Heavenly Kingdom." (Lawh-i-Aqdas 24:10)Bahá'í Hand of the Cause (apostle) Mirza Abu'l-Fadl wrote:"We of a certainty, have had no intent in the Celestial Kingdom but to exalt His Cause and glorify His praise; sufficient unto Me is God for a Protector." (Kitab-i-Aqdas, p.82)
"Bahá'u'lláh--exalted and glorified is His Name!--hath alone claimed that, verily, His Appearance is the promised Manifestation of God, His Face is the Face of God the Adored, and His Day is the appointed Day of God." (Bahá'í Proofs,pp.134-5)
The Promised Comforter
The LORD said to Joseph the Seer:
"Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him; for HE WILL UNVEIL HIS FACE UNTO YOU, and it shall be in his own time, and in his own way, and according to his own will." (D&C sec. 88:68)Bahá'u'lláh wrote:"Ye were also in the beginning with THE FATHER; that which is Spirit, even THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH." (D&C 93:23)
"The COMFORTER is the promise which I give unto you of ETERNAL LIFE, even THE GLORY which I spake concerning the ten virgins." (D&C 45:56)
"...the Church of the Firstborn are those who have received the fulness of THE FATHER." (D&C 76:70)
"There are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even THE GLORY OF GOD, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical." (D&C 76:70)
"The COMFORTER Whose advent all the Scriptures have promised is now come that He may reveal unto you all knowledge and wisdom. Seek Him over the entire surface of the earth, haply ye may find Him." (Words of Bahá'u'lláh pp.104-5)In Arabic, Bahá'u'lláh means THE GLORY OF GOD!"Verily I say, this is the Day in which mankind can BEHOLD THE FACE, and hear the Voice, of the Promised One." (Gleanings 10:vii)
"Verily, He who is THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH is come to guide you unto all truth. He speaketh not as prompted by His own self, but as bidden by Him Who is All-Knowing, the All-Wise." (Lawh-i-Aqdas 11:4-5)
"Say, O followers of the Son! Lo! THE FATHER is come, and that which ye were promised in the KINGDOM is fulfilled." (Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh p.12)
"The Voice of THE SON OF MAN is calling aloud from the sacred veil: 'Here am I, here am I, O God, My God!' THE FATHER is come!" (Words of Bahá'u'lláh p.104)
The Millennial Kingdom
Most Mormons today believe that the LDS Church is the Kingdom of God on earth. Only it has the Priesthood; the authority of God.
In Jesus' day, the common people believed that the High Priests communed with God. They believed they were Prophets,Seers and Revelators. But God had not spoken with them in many generations. They put their TOTAL faith and trust in men instead of God.
Did not their high priests have divine authority? Were they not God's true priesthood-leaders on earth? Yes, and yes. However, they had no spirit of discernment. God was not speaking with them. He was speaking to others whom the Jews did not know.
Most Mormons believe that the Celestial Kingdom is on 'the other side of the veil'! This is true! But the Celestial Kingdom is on THIS SIDE of the veil too; as is the Terrestrial and Telestial Kingdoms!
According to D&C sec. 65:
"3 Yea, a voice crying Prepare ye the way of the Lord, prepare the supper of the Lamb, make ready for the Bridegroom. The LDS Bible Dictionary (in the back of all LDS Bibles) says:
4 Pray unto the Lord, call upon his holy name, make known his wonderful works among the people.
5 Call upon the Lord, that his kingdom may go forth upon the earth, that the inhabitants thereof may receive it, and be prepared for the days to come, in which the Son of Man shall come down in heaven, clothed in the brightness of his GLORY, to meet the kingdom of God which is set up on the earth.
6 Wherefore, may the kingdom of God go forth, that the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN may come,..." (D&C 65:5-6)
"Kingdom of Heaven or Kingdom of God. These terms are used in various combinations and with various meanings. Generally speaking, the kingdom of God on earth is the Church. Is is a preparation for the greater kingdom~ the celestial or kingdom of heaven." (LDS Bible Dict. p.721)According to the LDS Bible Dictionary, in the back of every Bible printed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the purpose of the Church ("Kingdom of God") is to prepare the way on earth for "the greater kingdom"; which is the "Celestial Kingdom" and the "Kingdom of Heaven" which is to established upon this earth as it is in Heaven.
When Persian Bahá'ís first came to America in the year 1900 they created quite a scene while walking around New York City in their Fez hats and colorful Persian robes. Both The New York Times and The New York Herald decided to find out who these strangely dressed foreigners were. The New York Herald ran frontpage headlines such as "These Believe That Christ Has Returned To Earth" and "Strange Faith Has Attracted Many Followers". One article read:
"Is Christ living in the world to-day? There are tens of thousands of person who believe that He is; that the Kingdom of Heaven has been established upon the earth, and that the prophecies of the Book of Revelation and the Koran are already in process of fulfillment. There are hundreds who claim to have looked upon the face and to have listened to the voice of the Divinity, and there are other hundreds who can exhibit personal letters said to have been transcribed by His own hand." (New York Herald, Sunday, August 12, 1900, underline added)Bahá'u'lláh first unveiled His Face and true station to all the World in the Muslim year 1308 A.H. (1890-91 A.D.).
According to Mormon apostles, the Church and the Kingdom are two separate and distinct earthly (as well as heavenly) organizations!
Joseph Smith prophecied ("and let it be written") that the "Son of Man" would come to the Holy Land and unveil His Face in the years 1890-91. Bahá'u'lláh did so. The D&C 133:48 says that the LORD would "be red in his apparel". After Bahá'u'lláh's house (and wardrobe) in Baghdad were burned by anti-Bahá'í mobs in 1863, female Persian Bahá'ís made Him a new wardrobe; all from red Persian Tarmi drapes. D&C 65:5-6 says that the very purpose of the Kingdom of God on earth (the Church) was to prepare the way for "the greater kingdom"; that "the Son of Man" would come in the brightness of "his glory" to and bring the Kingdom of Heaven with Him to meet the Kingdom of God on earth. The Heavenly Kingdom would be established upon the earth! D&C 93:23 says that "the Father" is "the Spirit of Truth". Bahá'u'lláh identified Himself as "the Father" and "The Spirit of Truth" (see D&C 93:23!).
Baha'u'llah (Whom Baha'is sometimes refer to as "The Blessed Perfection") died in 1892 and was buried under His mansion at Bahji, just north of Akka (Acre), Israel. After His death, He appeared to the chief imam (Muslim clergyman) in Akka. One Baha'i at the time wrote:
"After the death of the Blessed Perfection, one day the chief of the Muhammadan priests of Akka came to our Lord ['Abdu'l-Baha] and said he had seen the door of his room open and the Blessed Perfection came into his room." (Dwight Barlow Collection, note 43-A online)Baha'is do not believe that the physical body is resurrected after death. Rather, the ethereal body is released at death like a bird being released from a cage. The ethereal body is invisible, and can only be seen in visions. The physical body returns to dust: dust to dust. It is the ethereal body that is "released" at death.
According to the Gospel of Peter (an ancient Christian Gospel once accepted as inspired of God by the early Christians), the physical body of Jesus was not resurrected, but was removed from the Garden Tomb by two angels just a few hours before dawn; when Mary Magdalene and the other women came to wash and anoint Jesus' body. What Mary Magdalene and the other disciples "saw" for forty days was the ethereal body of Christ, not His physical body. All physical bodies return to the elements from which they are made.
The Spirit of Truth
Is Joseph Smith the Spirit of Truth promised by Jesus? He never claimed to be. But Bahá'u'lláh did claim it!
Jesus said:
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of Truth is come, he will guide you unto all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify Me...." (John 16:13-14)Bahá'u'lláh wrote:
"Verily, He Who is the Spirit of Truth is now come to guide you unto all truth. He speaketh not as prompted by His own Self, but as bidden by Him Who is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. Say, this is the One Who hath glorified the Son and hath exalted His Cause." (Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh, p.12)The Holy Spirit purported said to Joseph Smith:
"Seek me diligently and ye shall find me" (D&C 88:63)Baha'u'llah wrote of Himself:
"Seek Him over the entire surface of the earth, haply ye may find Him." (The Words of Bahá'u'lláh, p.12)The Bahá'í Faith offers eternal marriage. Faithful Bahá'í couples will be married in all the worlds of God. The "sealing" takes place not by any priesthood power, but by believing in Bahá'u'lláh; Who is the Holy Spirit of Promise who "seals" us to eternal life. Joseph Smith said:
"Obtain that Holy Spirit of Promise~then you can be sealed to Eternal Life." (The Words of Joseph Smith, p.15)The Visit of 'Abdu'l-Baha to Salt Lake City in 1912
Abbas Effendi (photo left in 1868) was the eldest Son of Baha'u'llah. He took the name-title of 'Abdu'l-Baha (awb-dull baw-HAW); which means in Arabic "Servant of Glory".
'Abdu'l-Baha (awb-dull baw-HAW) was a Man Who was never known to be angry. He was never known to be dishonest. He was the "Mother Teresa" of His day; famous in Europe and America among the Intelligencia; because of His teachings. He taught the following:
*Men and women are equal in the sight of God, and women should be allowed to vote and to work at jobs men do and be paid the same amount.
*Russian will become Communist (Russia was not Communist until 1917) and prove a threat to the world for several generations.
*The races are equal in the sight of God, and the Negro is not black-skinned because of any curse of God, but because they lived for thousands of years where the rays of the Sun are strongest. A black skin is a protection from the rays of the Sun; not a sign of any curse from God [Mormon leaders taught from 1848 until 1978 that Negroes were the children of Cain, under the Curse of Cain, and a black skin was the "mark" of the curse of Cain].
*Mankind should think of itself as one family, and should form a league of nations to rid itself of armaments, and to use the money spent on arms to feed the hungry and allieviate the suffering of the poor.
*Resurrection is not of the physical body, but of the heavenly form (ethereal body) which is released at death like a bird from a cage.
*Heaven and Hell are not geographic locations, but are inner conditions of our own souls that manifest themselves in the Afterlife.
*There is no unending eternal Hell; all souls will have an opportunity to progress in the Afterlife.
*Prayers of the living for the dead have a possitive effect upon the dead in the Unseen World.
*Baptism was an outward sign of an inward truth, but this ritual is no longer necessary; all that is necessary for salvation is the Baptism of the Fire of the Love of God.
*The more we suffer in this life, the less we will have to suffer in the Afterlife.
*Jesus was born of a literal virgin and the Holy Spirit (the Father) [i.e. there was no sex between God the Father and Mary as Mormon leaders taught in 1912].
*Jesus was the very Saviour of Man, and we are to look to Him for personal salvation.
*Baha'u'llah came to unite mankind into one Human Family; otherwise mankind is destined to destroy itself.
'Abdu'l-Baha was quite famous in His day. In 1911 He travelled to Europe, and in 1912 to the United States. In Montreal Canada He made amazing prophecies that came to pass only a few years after He made them. He predicted the advent of World War I, and the great Spanish Flu epidemic that killed over 50 million people in 1917-1918.
In September of 1912, on His way from Chicago to San Francisco, He stopped into Salt Lake City. He knocked on the East Door of the Salt Lake Temple in the red robes of His Father, but was, of course, not allowed to enter. He tried to meet with then Church President Joseph F. Smith, but was refused an audience.
A Mormon woman named Xorol R. Oliver saw the photo of 'Abdu'l-Baha in The Salt Lake Tribune, and believed that He was Jesus come in a "cloud" (a new body and a new name). She became the first Mormon to become a Baha'i. Months previous to His visit, her deceased mother appeared to Xorol in dreams; telling her that Jesus was soon coming to Salt Lake City "in a cloud". Not "on" a cloud, but "in" a cloud (veil).
In the Book of Acts, first chapter, the Disciples of Jesus are gathered on the top of the Mount of Olives just outside Jerusalem. Jesus appeared to them, then they see Jesus (His ethereal body) in a vision; ascending into a cloud. Two "men" in white appear, and tell the disciples that "this same Jesus whom you have seen go up into heaven will come again in like manner as ye have seen him go up into heaven." (Acts 1:9) From this Christians expect Jesus to return "in a cloud" or perhaps riding a cloud, or perhaps suspended in the sky during a cloudy day over Jerusalem, or every place on earth where a Christian exists (even ships at sea that have Christians on them). This would mean that Jesus would have to "descend" over hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of cities, towns, villages, and ships at sea; anywhere a Christian might be. Other Christians believe that the Lord will come in the a "cloudy sky" but invisible to all but those "raptured" who will fly up into the sky to meet Jesus in a cloudy sky.
Mormons believe that Jesus will come "in a cloud in the sky" perhaps over Jerusalem, perhaps over Salt Lake City, perhaps over Jackson County Missouri; the place they believe that the City of New Jerusalem will be built during the Millennium (1000-year reign of Christ on Earth).
"A WORD which God hath adorned with the ornament of His Own Self, and made it Sovereign over the earth and all that is therein." (The World Order of Baha'u'llah, p.135)The Faith teaches that Prophets are Manifestations of God, the incarnations of the Names and Attributes of God. The Holy Qu'ran, the Holy Book of Islaam, lists 99 Names/Attributes of ALLÁH. The Essence of God does not incarnate, but His Names and Attributes do. They are called "Prophets". They are infallible, and thus do not have ordinary human souls.
Besides the Prophets are Seers: ordinary men and women who converse with angels. Seers are fallible humans; as fallible as any other, but they can converse with angels, and make prophecies.
Besides Prophets and Seers is the WORD of God. The WORD has a unique station; that of Mediator between the World of God and the World of Creation. The WORD also sometimes incarnates upon this planet.
Baha'is do not believe that human souls can reincarnate on this material planet. Human souls have only one life on this planet. Other mortal probations on other planets is possible; one probation per planet. But the Manifestations of God (the Names/Attributes of God), and the WORD of God can return; since They do not have ordinary human souls.
The Holy Spirit told Joseph Smith:
"When the Savior shall appear He will appear as a man like ourselves." (Doctrine & Covenants 1:35) I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God; wherefore, gird up your loans and I will suddenly come to my temple." (D&C 38:8) "And the Lord shall be red in his apparel like him that treadeth the wine vat;...." (D&C 133:48)Brigham Young told the Mormons, in General Conference, in 1857:
"Jesus has been upon the earth a great more times than you are aware of. When Jesus makes his next appearance upon the earth, but few in this church will be prepared to receive him and see him face to face and converse with him, but he will come to his temple." (Brigham Young in the Tabernacle, General Conference, Salt Lake City, 1857, Journal of Discourses 7:142)Baha'is believe that Baha'u'llah was the Incarnation of the Holy Ghost, or Spirit of Truth, on Earth.
Mormons still await the "Day" that the Holy Ghost, Whom they believe is a Spirit-Man Who has not yet taken a body, will "come down and get a body" and perform some Great and Holy Mission on Earth.
The Baha'is know that that "Day" has already come!
Shoghi Effendi & Joseph Smith
Before His death in 1921, 'Abdu'l-Baha appointed His eldest grandson, Shoghi Effendi (shawg-kee ef-fen-dee) to be the Guardian of the Faith, meaning the Governor of the Faith and the Interpreter of the Holy Writings of the Faith. Shoghi Effendi (1897-1957) ruled the Faith until his death in 1957. Many Baha'is believe he was a Seer. He prophesied of the Holocaust, the Internet, and possibly the 9-11 terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City, years or decades before this things became reality.
Shoghi Effendi told Baha'is on several occassions that Joseph Smith was "A Seer, not a prophet minor or otherwise". In the Baha'i Faith a "Seer" is any ordinary man or woman who converses with angels, but who are not Prophets. A Prophet is an inspired infallible man under the influence of the Holy Spirit. A "Seer" is a fallible man or woman who sees visions of angels. Seers may prophesy just like Prophets, but they are not infallible.
The Baha'is would not believe that the President and Apostles of the LDS Church are "Prophets~Seers~Revelators"; they do not prophesy-see-revelate! They are "Prophets" and "Seers" in name only.
Shoghi Effendi was once asked if The Book of Mormon was history or parable. He said it was "a matter for historians to pass upon"; suggesting that the book was a non-historical divine parable (like the Book of Jonah) and not a literal history of Jews in ancient America.
If a divine parable, the Nephites (nee-fights) would be a symbol of the white race in America, and the Lamanites (lay-man-nights) were be a symbol of the colored races of America. The Book of Mormon says that the Nephites were "utterly destroyed" by the Lamanites 400 years after Jesus visited them; because of their "pride" and "whoredoms" and materialism (love of wealth and worship of money). Perhaps the book is a prophetic parable about the future of America or perhaps the future of the Mormons in America?
'Abdu'l-Baha visited the Mormons in Utah in 1912. If you take 1912 plus 400 years it comes to 2512 A.D. At the beginning of the 26th century, the white race in America will be a small minority; like the Nephites in The Book of Mormon. Will they become prideful and arrogant and lovers of wealth like the Nephites in The Book of Mormon? Will their fate be the same?
"Zion" means "stone monument". The Salt Lake Temple, a granite monument which Mormons used to refer to as "Zion" in 1912, faces East; the direction from which they believe Jesus will "suddenly" (unexpectantly) come to His Temple and knock on the East Door.
Summary & Conclusion
1. The "Face of the Son of Man" appearing in 1891 refers to the Holy Ghost Incarnate (Baha'u'llah) not to Jesus. Joseph Smith saw Jesus' face in 1820 and again in 1836 (inside the Kirtland Temple). Why would the LORD promise that "if" Joseph Smith lived to 1891 he would "see the Face of the Son of Man" (D&C 130:15) when Joseph Smith already saw Jesus' face twice? It makes no sense at all unless the "Son of Man" refers to the coming incarnation of the Holy Ghost.
2. Joseph Smith said in 1843 that the "Holy Ghost is now in a state of probation"; a term meaning a mortal life on this planet. Somewhere in 1843, the Holy Ghost was a mortal Man.
3. Baha'u'llah appeared in red apparel; because His wardrobe was burned in Baghdad, and Baha'i women made for Him a new wardrobe our of red Persian drapery.
4. The Baha'i Faith teaches eternal marriage for those who reach an "exalted state" of spirituality in this life. No priesthood "sealings" are necessary. Joseph Smith said that the "sealings" done in the Temple are not true sealings, but "symbolic" of the "true sealing" which takes place by the Holy Spirit of Promise (Who is Baha'u'llah).
5. The Endowment Ceremony symbolically points to Baha'u'llah: the Lord Behind the Veil, Who sat behind white veils in His room in Akka, Israel. Nobody could enter His presence without knowing certain secret "signs and tokens". His Kingdom is the "Celestial Kingdom of God" on earth.
6. "Jesus Christ" was a combination of two Divine Beings in one body; the Father (Spirit of Truth), and the Son (WORD of God). They dwelt in one body 2,000 years ago as "Jesus Christ". They would return 1800 years later as a literal "Father" and "Son".
7. 'Abdu'l-Baha was the WORD! He came to Salt Lake City in September of 1912, but only a few Mormons--those with accute spiritual insight (a third eye) could "see" (recognize) Him. He came not riding "on" a cloud (as Mormons expected), but "in" a cloud (veil). He knocked on the East Door of the Salt Lake Temple, in the red robes of His Father, but was not let in. He tried to meet with Mormon Church President Joseph F. Smith (the newphew of Joseph Smith), but was rudely refused an audience. Brigham Young said in 1857 that "few" Mormons would recognize the Lord when He came to them.
8. Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Faith, several times referred to Joseph Smith as a "Seer"; meaning a non-prophet who speaks with angels. Baha'is cannot accept Joseph Smith as a Prophet; because a "Prophet" in the Faith means an incarnation of a Name/Attribute of God; an infallible human. But Baha'is can accept, or reject, Joseph Smith as an inspired but fallible Seer. They cannot accept The Book of Mormon as infallible "Scripture" but they can accept, or reject, The Book of Mormon as a non-historical divine prophetic parable about the future of America.
9. Baha'is are promised eternal marriage and eternal families and eternal life "if" they reach an "exated state" of spirituality in this life; by truly accepting and following the Holy Spirit of Promise, Who is Baha'u'llah~The Glory of God.
Joseph the Seer said:
"Obtain that Holy Spirit of Promise~then you can be sealed to Eternal Life." (The Words of Joseph Smith, p.15)Right: 'Abdu'l-Baha in His Father's red robe, as He may have appeared when He knocked on the east door of the Salt Lake Temple in September of 1912.
"I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God; wherefore, gird up your loins and I will suddenly come to my temple. Even so. Amen." (D&C 36:8)
"Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you that mine eyes are upon you. I am in your midst and ye cannot see me; But the day soon cometh that ye shall see me, and know that I am; for the veil of darkness shall soon be rent. Wherefore, gird up your loins and be prepared." (Doctrines and Covenant, 38:7)
"I am in your midst but ye cannot see me. And the day cometh that you shall hear my voice and see me, and know that I am. Watch, therefore, that ye may be ready." (Doctrines and Covenant, 50:44)
"When the Savior shall appear we shall see Him as He is; as a man like ourselves." (D&C 130:1)
"He is the Son of God, the only Door, the Lord of Mankind!" (Assadullah [personal secretary of 'Abdu'l-Baha] in Sacred Mysteries, p.74)
"Many sitting in the congregation today will stand in the flesh [still be alive] when the Lord Jesus Christ visits the Zion of God [i.e. Salt Lake Temple] here in the mountains of Israel." (LDS Church President Wilford Woodruff, Conference Reports, April 1998, p.57).
"And the Lord shall be red in his apparel like him that treadeth the wine vat,..." (D&C 133:48, RLDS D&C 108:9c)
Dear Seeker of Truth,
The 1891 prophecies of Joseph the Seer have been fulfilled! Jesus Christ, the "Father and the Son" (Mosiah 15:3, Ether 3:14) has returned as a Father and a Son! They have a Message for you! Come hear ye Them! GO IN PEACE!
