DANTII NIN AAN AQOON, MARA DUUG AH HORTEED BUU DHAMAADAA!

Modern Somali coastal towns
Until the late nineteenth century the history of horn of Africa is essentially the history of the great Somali expansion from the north, and of the rise and decline of Muslim emporia along the coast.
The movements in the hinterland did not accomplish the gradual enlargement of their territory by the Somali only, nor were events on the coast without their effect in the interior.
Certainly the evidence at present available leaves no doubt that the gradual expansion over the last ten century of the Hamitic Somali from the shore of the Gulf of Aden to the plains of Northern Kenya is one most sustained, and inits effects, far-reaching movements of population in the history of North-East Africa.

Whatever those people originated, the Arabs were first people allocated in the Somali coastal town and it is a necessary to consider first the early phases of Arab settlement along the Somali coastal town. At the some era, indirectly if not always directly, the absorption of Arab settlers seems to have precipitated, the movements of Somali expansion.

There is a little doubt that Arabian penetration along the northern and southern Somali coats is a great antiquity. It probably antedates the Islamic period; and certain shortly after the hegira Muslim Arabs and Persians were developing a string of a Somali coastal settlement.

Typical of these centers of Arab influence in northern Somali are the ancient ports of Zeila and Berbera. Zeila first appears in the record of the Arabs geographers the end of ninth century.
This town was politically the most important of the Arab settlements in the north and owed its economic prosperity, at times considerable, to its geographical position as one of the chief ports of the Abyssinian hinterland in the trade with Arabia and the Orient.

Zeila was originally the center of the Muslim emirate of Adal, part of the state of Ifat, which lay in the plateau region of eastern Shoa.
Berbera, however, conserves the name in classical times to the northern coast as whole, is probably of similar antiquity, but its history is much more obscure; it is first mentioned by Arab geographers in thirteen century.

Thereafter, beyond the fact that during the period of Portuguese domination in the Red Sea the town was sacked in 1558 by Saldanha, little is known of its history until three century ago.
Similar obscurity surrounds most of the history of the ancient port of Mait, on the eastern coast in Erigavo district, and one of the principal centers of early Somali expansion.

While these northern Somali coastal centers were developing, Arab settlers were opening, or consolidating, a similar series of ports in the south. Of these the most important were Mogadishu, the so-called present the nation/s capital, Brava, an Merca- all commercial towns largely dependent for their property upon the entropy trade between Abyssinia, Arabia and the market of the East.

Thus, in both the north and south, by the tenth century a ring of coastal emporia had been created, largely as a result of Arab enterprise, and through these ports Islam and Arab trade had gained a foothold which, consolidated and strengthened in succeeding centuries, was to become the foundation for Muslim expansion in North East Africa.

Late sixteenth century, it commenced European interest in Somali coastal towns. Over century, both north and south Somali coastal towns were established and maintained a central states and were both incorporated in the Ottoman Empire. In 1854 circa Richard Burton visited in Somali coastal towns.
By the time Zeila and Mogadishu was independent Muslim principality and governed by Ajuran and Geledi in the south and Hajji Sharmarke by north Somali coastal towns mainly Zeila. While in 1855 Zeila and Mogadishu continued the coastal tradition of instituted authority under a Somali governor.

The governor for Benadir coast as a whole was stationed at Brava, which compared with Mogadishu impressed Gullian with its prosperity, Thus the city of 5,000 souls, was effectively led by two personages, one a Somali and the other an Arab who spoke some western languages. The Western partition of Somali territory as whole took place in Coastal towns. French, British and Italian colonial competition in Somali Territory took place…To a large extent the coastal and hinterland traditions had merged, and the center of political pressure had swung from the coast to the interior.

The new external links between the coast and the outside world, served in the following decades of the nineteenth century to pave the way for a new colonial impact in which the pressure was mainly from the coast towards the hinterland….

CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN SOMALIA
MARINE POLLUTION
Somalia is blessed with a long resources-rich coastline, extending for about 3,335 km, borders the Gulf of Aden in the North, Indian Ocean in the East to South and Kenya in the South. It is the longest and most full of natural resource coastline in Africa.

This coastline is very fresh of use, perhaps deposited to the posterity. But it dares, nowadays, to be an international garbage can, whereby foreign vessels indiscriminately pollute it sharply without discrimination.

Proportionately, every month tenths of indigenous people die in or around every seashore area of the country from direct and immediate effects of unknown and unexpected poisonous substances which is, really, catastrophic blowout.

For instance, in Eil-dher, a small town in Galgadud region, in April 1996, the seashore water put out a blue-black collar effluence which is oily-liquid with unprecedented proportion.

In addition, a large number of sealed strange containers were seen floating out. The residents haphazardly and curiously tried to investigate it.

consequently, many were killed as they were to open or destroy such containers. Another event was when the same containers appeared on the Adale seashore in 1992.

The common source of Somalian marine pollution is that caused by external diffuses of pollution from seabed activities and ocean dumping (land based pollution is also there increasingly) which is deliberate disposal into Somalian sea water.
