Somalia: Economic Aspects
The Somali post-colonial economy had four principal attributes. First, it's organization perpetuated a mismatch between the basic needs of the people and the external orientation of the productive structure. Second, it relied on conditional foreign loans and grants, as the sole source for investments and development, and this reinforced the economic status status quo. Third, very few public resources were directed to improving and expanding agricultural production. Fourth, the state, unsteadily controlled by factions of the elite, dominated the distribution of foreign aid. The centralization of investment in the hands of the governing clique led to misappropriation and misuse of resources and political instability.
These features of the old social system must not be a part of any program of resurrection.
The disintegration of sociopolitical order and the depressing light of millions of ordinary people in Somalia were preceded by a long period in which socioeconomic conditions markedly and progressively became worse. A pivotal element in the evolution of the present situation was the conflict between competing of the elite over the control and use of the meager resource of the country. This struggle starved the productive sector of the economy, which in turn intensified social cleavages and communal strife.
The crises of the Somali economy, then, resulted from a process of under accumulation of capital, which led to the dire situation faced by most Somalis. It is generally assumed that all sectors of the economy suffer from the same maladies and, therefore, that the countries in crisis. Such as monolithic conception of the problem often leads to a simplistic and types of crisis (e.g. specific to an industry, a sector, or a region) that coexist.
As the overview of this situation Somalia faced many difficulties long before the fall of the old regime. The first two major sections of this writing investigate different manifestations of the issue of capital under accumulation in two components of the Somali agrarian economy (i. e .exports agriculture and grain domestic production). This focus warranted because of the absence of a vibrant industrial economy and the fact that agriculture is the only productive area that holds a promise of growth and development in the immediate future, in terms of contributing to accumulation while providing for the basic needs of a significant portion of the population . Moreover, nearly half of the Somali population makes their living in agriculture and therefore constitutes a viable base on which to buildings is impossible.
Moreover, it is important to note here that there has been excessive and illegal fishing along the Somali coast by ships from Taiwan, Russia, Japan, Italy, ect. This is certain to endanger the health of marine life, as well as accelerate Somali impoverishment furthermore; any long-term development strategy must include a program of industrialization, without sustained improvement in the standard of living.
In addition, livestock production has been the dominant part of the Somali economy in terms of employment and foreign exchange earnings since the early 1960's. The health and vitality of the national economy was always contingent on the performance of this sector and will continue to be so in near future, albeit at reduced level. Consequently, a coherent understanding of the problems faced by the pastoral livestock sector is essential for ant attempt at reconstruction. To fully appreciate the dire condition of the crucial elements, we need to broaden our conceptual horizon in assessing the dynamics and the nature of the pastoral system.
In conclusion, this essay has traces the history of a Somali communal identity based on the clan structure. It has presented the birth of the Somali state and the causes of the Somali revolution led by Mohamed Siyad Bare. It also presented the Somali social life style based on clan structure. The paper has also argued that the Somali economic was relied on foreign loan and a lack of industrialization. The way forward could invove improved agriculture, fishing increasing industrialization, and the establishment of well functional political and social system.

CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN SOMALIA

The climate of Somalia ranges from tropical to subtropical and from arid to semiarid. Temperature
usually average 27.8 c (82 f), but may be as low as 0 c(32 f) in the mountain areas and as high as
46.7 c(116 f) along the coast. The monsoon winds bring a dry season from September to
December and rainy season from March to May. The average annual rainfall is only about 279 mm
(11 in).
In the term of air pollution, during droughts which are most of the seasons , dust carried out by
winds around the earth practically causes some forms of radio-actives and other air contamination.
As a result of this, approximately half of the Somalian citizens suffer from the well-known chronic
decease of (sanboor) sickness. Similarly, almost the rest half may suffer from Asthma, Allergic,
Gastric, Tubercles, Bronchus and some more chronic and serious ills. A better example of how their
health is affected happens when, in the traditional life, large heads of cattle are driven towards
watering points, it causes huge dust along the trail that is directly to be inhaled by those driving the
heads.
Therefore, as a matter of reality, besides the death of goats and sheep from air pollution and waste
disposal, there are uncountable number of people who normally die so. The looseness of the soil
resulted by that too, practically ensures the presence of dust in the air constantly. Thus, such
substance forms some kinds of pollution which is hazardous or potentially hazardous to human
health.
In the impact of civil war, pumps and motor arms used constantly left behind a complex types of air
pollution mainly carbon dioxide and radio-actives as well as unclassified chemicals that explicitly
caused climate change. That is why a great number of Somalis usually die from many unspecified
serious sickness including diarrhea, jeoness, etc.
