Latics Anecdotes

JOY AT OLDHAM

When I found out I was going to work at Oldham for my Work Experience I was over the moon. I have been a supporter of the Latics for several years. I have just purchased my season ticket and I thought I would never get such a great opportunity. This is what I did during my week.

Monday; I started at 12:00pm and met John Platt. I would be working with him for the whole of the week. My first day included some office work and cleaning the junior Latics lounge.

Tuesday; I carried on with my office work. In the afternoon I went to two schools and did some football training.

Wednesday; I helped with a school tour around the ground. It was really good and interesting. I also went to another school football training.

Thursday; Watched the 1st. team training. I met Andy Ritchie, Scott McNiven, Paul Jones, Steve Whitehall, Lee Duxbury and my favourite player Craig Dudley. I also went to an after school club training.

Friday; I missed today because I was ill.

My week went great, and I loved it. I will never forget my week at Oldham AFC. John gave me a signed pennant and I was mentioned in the programme. This was the best week of my life so far.

URI GELLER’S INTEREST IN ATHLETIC

December 1998

[Uri Geller]

After much publicity about various attempts to take control over the affairs of Oldham Athletic, I decided to try to find out what transpired with the recent, much publicised attempt of Uri Geller. Rather than use my usual method of mind power for communicating, I decided to e-mail Uri for his views. Imagine my surprise when I received a letter of reply addressed to the Latics Supporters Club in Canada, complete with an autographed photo.

In his letter, Uri went into great depth about how his techniques have helped him and thousands of people around the world. Uri has also written a new novel called “ELLA”, which he claims will move you beyond your expectations and imaginations. Another claimed way of seizing control of your life and imposing your dreams on the world is “URI’S LITTLE BOOK OF MINDPOWER”. Unfortunately, it didn’t help by allowing him to seize control of Oldham Athletic AFC and impose the dreams of thousands of Latics followers.

Although unable to enter into specifics about the Oldham deal Uri does confide that he is still searching for the ‘right club’ but emphasises that when it does come along it has to come from the heart. If you are interested in reading more about Uri’s paranormal powers etc. visit Uri’s website, or if you are interested in his books they can be found at Amazon. Alternatively, if you wish to e-mail me at latics@angelfire.com I will send you the phone numbers of other sources of obtaining his books and 'Mind Power Kit'. No, I’m not on commission! I’m just repaying a favour as he was gratuitous enough to answer my questions about his interest with the club.

In his conclusion Uri asks us to Stay Positive and Optimistic but it’s a hard life for all Oldham Athletic supporters. We have seen our side slide from being in arguably the most prestigious and competitive football league in the world, to a relegation spot and heading for the third division. The third division is one step up from non-league football with automatic relegation for the bottom club. Let’s hope that a saviour does come along soon before it’s too late. Thanks for your time Uri.

The Chairman

THE CHAIRMAN'S VISIT

[plane]

6th. August 97 and the expedition begins with an 'executive first class' flight from Vancouver to London Heathrow. The champers is waiting as the fab four (The Chairman, Mrs. Chairman, 'Spot the Ball' and his wife, Carolyn) leave the snow covered peaks of Canada. After the overnight flight and a 'hotel hoppa' trip the intrepid explorers head north in a hired VW Polo, jet lagged but excited at the prospect of seeing their heroes once again.

The tired trio (quad wouldn't rhyme) HAVE to make a call at Oldham first to sample their first Holland's pudding in years. After four lots of pudding, chips and peas with gravy the next stop is the local pub to wash it down with a pint of ale. Who is standing at the bar in his plaid shorts? None other than Martin Platt from Coronation Street! Carolyn has a chat and gets him to sign her five dollar bill which Martin had hoped to spend on a few pints. However, the next jaunt is another drive north to Barnoldswick, home of 'The Bradshaws', to meet Mrs. Chairman's family.

Saturday comes. The Chairman and Spot head for Boundary Park whilst the women roam the town centre to enjoy the outside market, shops and Spindles. After a few in the Elevenways, a couple of donners and then a few more in the Elevenways, it's finally off to Boundary Park and the prospect of thrashing York City to go to the top of the second division. In the pub Spot was observant enough to spy the photograph of a true Latics fan with his personalised car number plates, which most loyalists would die for, hanging on the wall of fame between the two pictures of that "Redders penalty". True to form we miss the kick-off and the new song. I was still expecting Mouldy Old Dough! I couldn't work out the new chant which sounded like "get a wheelchair, Tommy". I eventually was told that it was "Neil Warnock's blue and white army". For Spot it was the first time he had ever been to a league match. I tried to explain the euphoria experienced when a goal went in. Before I had finished he was jumping up and down like a veteran after Garnett had popped in the first goal that the Latics had scored in the third level since 1974. Half time was spent socialising with fans who recognised the shirt and I wallowed in the positive comments about the Canadian LSC web page. All in all a successful start to the campaign and one which offered optimism for the forthcoming season.

Tuesday arrives. The deadly duo again head for Oldham after yesterdays visit to Manchester to tour Coronation Street (which was closed due to filming). The rest of the day was allocated to finding a cheap Latics shirt. No such luck! Even Spoilsports only had small and an extra small, hardly likely to fit a Chairman bulging with pride amongst other things. After a few in the Elevenways we set off, this time early enough to see the kick-off. It's a wonder Cilla wasn't there to shout Surprise! Surprise! We all agreed to meet back in the Elevenways after the game in case we got lost due to the huge following that Grimsby brought with them. We walked back together! The game was a non event in my humble opinion but the result was good enough to suggest that we might just have done enough to meet Tranmere in the next round. I was also proud to have witnessed the first goal since the return of the prodigal son. The night ended well enough with pompadums, onion bargees and a Ruby Murray of Madras quality.

Thursday is the day Spot and his wife have to return to Canada. Still no luck with the shirts although a few mates have a few irons in the fire. I promised to follow through. After the seeing off it was a trip to Windsor Castle to witness The Queen in residence (honest - the flag was flying). I was singing "flying high up in the sky......" and I'm sure she came to the window of the tower to give a wave of support for the boys in blue. I phoned another mate on his mobile but he was in Anglesey on holiday. As the lads were playing in Wrexham on Saturday I decided to call and have a pint in Anglesey. Off north yet again.

Saturday again. I had arranged to meet my reporter, Phil Costelloe, at 2:00pm outside gate number 40. As we had only previously communicated over the internet it was an historic moment for the both of us. Phil arrived 15 minutes early, pen and paper in hand, thankfully giving us time to quaff a few in the local watering hole before the game. At the match I was boasting that it was because of me that we had had such a promising start to the campaign. Me and my big gob! We were soon 2-0 down due to the Latics inability to defend from corners. I thought a coach worked on those things! After the break I was convinced that Warnock has passed the message on to the team that The Chairman was watching as they attacked the second half with such gusto that we were almost blown out of our 45 degree forward sloping seats. It was unfortunately to no avail as, soon after McCarthy's ray of hope, we were 3-1 down and heading for our first defeat of the season. Dejected and miserable for the first time since leaving Canada I now have the option of blaming the defeat on Spot (for going back to Canada) or Phil the reporter (for being there). My last game 'till who knows when? The only good thing to come out of the match was the fact that I heard one of my favourite songs of all time. When the St. John ambulance man ran onto the field and the Latics fans sang "Who's ate all the pies" I was emotionally taken aback. Whatever the reason it can't be my fault as I previously had two wins under my belt (amongst other things).

[england] To summarise the experience I am still impressed with England and the enthusiasm of the new breed of zigga-zagga boys currently resident at Boundary Park. Also on the positive side I can see that the game is heading back to the time when opposing supporters could walk to the ground together, with shirts and scalves showing, without the fear of someone jumping you from behind. Mrs. Chairman is convinced that the Government are putting something in the drinking water to subdue the peasants. I hope the trend continues as England is still a green and pleasant land. I was impressed with the cleanliness as I remember lots of litter. There are still some areas but on the whole I can see pride returning to the country. On the negative side I learned about 'twoccing', a new word for me. I couldn't believe that after three games into the season I still couldn't get a Latics shirt at a reasonable price. I went to the Latique two days before I flew home. Even they didn't have a shirt larger than small. They did promise that they would be in tomorrow. Another 1.5 hr. drive to Oldham finally unearthed a blue/red striped extra large shirt but forty quid is far too much to pay. I can return to Canada reasonably happy. Another bone of contention is the obscene fact that whichever town/city you visit you see a plethora of kids wearing shirts with Sharpe written on it. I was under the impression that he had resigned!

On the playing front I have to be honest when I say I know it is going to be a hard year. The sad part is that we do not possess any 'star' players like we used to do in the glory years. The Latics are in a deserved position and I only hope the management team are capable of building a playing team that Oldham can once again be proud of. Let's get out of the basement and bring some respectability back to the town.

20th. August 97, 2,300 driven miles later and a short 7,000 miles still to travel. At least I can be thinking what to write for my report when I return to the world of the internet. Good luck to you all. I'll be back!
The Chairman.

OLDHAM ATHLETIC AWAY AT READING - LOST 2-0

Awoke at 7am and got Nikki up 15mins later, 7:45 after 2 cups of tea and several toast we set off tor the bus, the 08:20 No59 for the short trip to Derker train station. 08:20 was 5mins Late but went quite fast and only look 15mins, another 15min. and a short walk and we got to Piccadilly Station, platform 5 to READING. 09:15, time to get a paper, some chocolate and cans of pop.

We ate our homemade sandwiches and talked, sometimes sharing a can and the headphones to the Walkman, the 3hr journey soon passed and we got off at Reading station and following my 'little map' made our way to the BUTLER INN our first pub on the way to the ground. The next pub, the ALFRED’s HEAD, was nice but a bit "iffy" safety wise, so only had the one drink, then a long walk to the ground with no open pubs in between, till we got to the home fans pub on the corner of their end.

We chanced it, but to our relief found it was full of Latics fans so me and Nikki talked freely and we had a good laugh. We went to the club shop to get my home badge but they had sold out so I will have to get one in Oldham! The weather was damp but it did stopped raining, so looking at the open terrace and the 5 pounds for children and 8 pounds for adults compared to 10 pounds sitting in very cramped conditions, I decided to save the money, enjoy the atmosphere and risk the rain.

Our fans where buoyant. The home fans where unusually obnoxious, remembering how great the Norwich fans where, not so long ago in a similar situation. It gladdens the heart to see so many young Laties fans both boys and girls going so far away to watch our team, but it also saddens me to see them suffer as we all do at the present time. The game, you've seen it before, you've read about it before, a disallowed McCathy goal, they score, an Andy Ritchie missed penalty, there you go again. Final whistle! The players come over, me and Nikki clapped them off as we made our way back to the Butler where we where greeted by about 20 Latics fans who didn't stop after the 2nd goal had gone in.

18:30 train to Piccadily changed platforms at the last minute so a mad dash by eveyone from one platform to the other. I got some refreshments, two cans of Guinness and a ham sandwich for Nikki. We wore and showed our colours with pride but when a group of lads got on at Wolverhampton I feared for our safety when they eyed our shirts and sat near us. My fears where unfounded and in fact we shared football talk with them till they got off at Stockport. Some where Man U. fans, Man City and Stockport but they said they didn't (go to many of their respective games, but it was nice to talk to them and I think having a beautiful girl next to me helped.

Piccadilly Station 21:20, phoned Sue to ask her to put some chips in the pan, then it was a run for the tram to Victoria where the train to Rochdale stopping at Oldham Werneth, Mumps, Derker and Shaw was about to set off. Phew!

Again, some nice conversation with the whole carrage it seemed, about the Latics, made us feel special to be at the center of attention for everyone. Our stop at Derker soon arrived and we set off on our last leg for home on a cold, starry but calm night. 22:15 arrived home, glad to be back, but what a day mixed with feelings of having had a good day socially but with the realisation of knowing now for sure that unless a miracle happens then we are doomed to the 2nd Division, Bradford and Grimsby MUST lose their last two games. Are there any cans in the fridge, Sue?

Good Night.

PAUL SHEPHERD PLAYS FOR LATICS!

In the 1996-97 season goalkeeper Paul Shepherd was at Boundary Park as cover for the injured Jon Hallworth. He played in a friendly game and after an impressive show was invited back for a further weeks trial. Paul is a graduate of Johnson Heights Secondary School, Surrey and is well known by many of the Canadian LSC members. He has dual Canadian and British nationality and has played for both Vancouver 86'ers and Dundee United. He also represented Canada in the 'Olympic Qualifying Game' against Australia. After the resignation of Graeme Sharp and Colin Harvey interest dropped. Unfortunately for Paul the same thing happened when he was at Kilmarnock for trials. The LSC wishes Paul every success.

Paul is currently back playing for the Vancouver 86'ers.

TETS MEETS ANDY RITCHIE

After a home game some seasons ago the 'fearsome four' decided, at the suggestion of Tets and after a skinfull, to try to gain access to the players lounge. Although a daunting task, Tets reassured us that it could be achieved. His training as leader of the Butlins escape committee was finally bearing fruit. After a quick flash of my Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers union card and some cock and bull story we managed to bypass the commissionaire, who was off guard thinking about tactics for his Monday-Friday job as a bouncer at Mothercare.

After about three glasses of 'refreshment' (they don't drink pints in there) and constant ear-ache from Tets about his hero, Andy Ritchie, who should walk into the room but the man himself. "Andy Ritchie just came in" exclaimed a delirious, knee knocking Tets. "Do you want to meet him," said I. "No! You can't....." said he "....can you?"

"Andy" I shouted across the crowded room, "come and let me introduce you to my friend, Tets". To Tets' amazement he strode over and I casually introduced them as if I had known Andy for years. That's the kind of bloke he is. After about ten minutes of grovelling I eventually managed to prise their hands apart. In Tets' eyes I became a hero that day.

So, if you are ever in Tets' pub ask him for a free pint from the man who introduced him to Andy Ritchie. And you know folks, this story is true...I know....I was that supporter......
