St. Francois County Joint Communications - 911 Dispatch

St. Francois County Missouri is
located in the Midwest Region of the United States, in the Southeast Region
of Missouri. We are 60 miles South of St. Louis, Missouri on U.S. 67 Hwy.
Our county encompasses approximately 450 square miles and has a current
population of just under 55,000 people.
The St. Francois County Joint Communications
- 911 Dispatch was formed in 1993 and officially went online at 12:01am
on May 01, 1993. This project actually had a great impact on our county
in many ways.

First and foremost, it gave our citizens,
as well as people just passing through, an effective way to obtain emergency
services. In the past, there were several seven digit numbers throughout
the county a person would have to call when they needed help. If a person
was not familiar with the area or upset, often too many times they called
the wrong number, having to be transferred, which takes time. The implementation
of the universal emergency number 911 solved this problem. Our center also
has what is referred to as "Enhanced 911" which means that when a person
calls 911 we immediately have their phone number, a name, and most importantly,
the location they are calling from. Older 911 systems only displayed the
phone number, making it still difficult to get a location many times.

Secondly, it brought most of the emergency
personnel in this county together. With most of the county now being dispatched
through this one center, communication among all agencies has been greatly
improved. If an officer in one area is working on something and needs assistance
from an officer in another area of the county, we have the information.
In the past, the separate dispatch centers had to call one another all
the time to exchange information.

And last but definitely not least,
this also brought about a proper addressing structure for our county. In
the past, many rural areas were addressed with route and box numbers which
actually had no set pattern. Our addressing now is a numeric address with
a road name. For example, instead of Rt. 4 Box 1234-G, the address may
now be 2167 U.S. Hwy 67.
The St. Francois County Joint Communications
Center - 911 Dispatch handles all emergency calls and dispatches all emergency
personnel in St. Francois County with the exception of Police in the City
of Farmington, MO.
