Sammy's Story
Charles Richardson Samuel Fields
Was born on December 1, 1998, to Charles and Connie Fields. Samuel, as his parents called him, had a pretty good start in life his first day anyway. On the second day of Samuels life, he was looking kind of blueish, and his blood pressures were different from the top portion of his body to the bottom portion.
Dr Kinney of Madigan Army Medical Center of Ft Lewis, WA found out that Samuel needed a Coaractation Repair, Samuel was then immediatly sent to Children's Hospital in Seattle, WA.
This first surgery went very well and Samuel was sent home from the hospital on December 18th. He did great his first month home and then around mid January he started having some more troubles, and a Echo revealed he had a bicuspid aortic valve with stenosis. The repair for this was done by Angioplasty on January 28th. Samuel was 1 month old at this time and again all seemed well after the surgery.
Then in mid February he was hospitalized for two weeks. Samuel was two months old at this time and the doctors couldn't find a cause for his problems, then they discovered he had Mitral Stenosis and that eventually he would need his Mitral Valve repaired.
Long about March he got sick again, so they went ahead and did a Angioplasty on his Mitral Valve which was performed by Dr. Thomas Jones of Seattle Childrens at three months of age.
Samuel was diagonsed with an overall condition called Shones Complex sometime during the March hospital visit, this is a rare congentital heart defect. Not much is known about this heart condition.
Samuel held out until two days before Easter when he was hospitalized for complications and reflux. During this hospital stay Samuel contacted 3 different infections with the third one ending his life on May 4th, 1999. Samuel was five months old during this hospital stay and was in the hospital for a total of 36 days. He seemed to be declining the night before he passed on, when his mother spoke to the night nurses regarding this and asking that they call a doctor in, the nurses declined and said the mother was over reacting. She told them that by the end of the night they would have to ventilate Samuel, because his breathing was labored and he was showing signs of distress. The next morning, Mrs Fields was paged by the Cardiologist and told that her son had been put on a ventilator to help him breath. Her last moments spent with Samuel were at his bed side, as he squeezed her finger and smiled up at her, she then stepped out of the room and Samuel coded and passed away after 25 minutes of being bagged. Samuel died at 1:50 p.m at Children's Hospital in Seattle, WA.
You were our sunshine, our only sunshine
You made us happy, when skies were gray
You'll never no dear, how much we loved you
So please don't take, our sunshine away
The other night dear, as we lay sleeping
we dreamt we held you in our arms, When we awoke dear
we were mistaken, so we hung our heads and cried
You were our sunshine, our only sunshine
You made us happy, when skies were gray
You'll never no dear, how much we loved you
So please don't take, our sunshine away
We will always love you baby boy
And God hath given me "Gods Choosen one, Samuel"
Then God asked of me to give my child unto him
The tears came, the skies opened, and into my
Fathers arms, my child flew home to enternal grace.
In Loving Memory Of C.R Samuel Fields aka Sammy by his family
