Let's begin with a brief biography..

For Mattias Ohlund, the NHL is a dream come true. "Ever since I was a young boy I wanted to play in the NHL. I guess Canadian and Swedish children have a lot of things in common," Mattias says. In 1997 (his first year in the NHL), Mattias became a rookie defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks. But at 21, he already has a lot of experience. He spent three years in the Swedish Elite League. That's where the best players in his home country play. Mattias did well even though he was a teenager playing against men. Still, he didn't know what to expect when he moved to North America. "The play is much faster in the NHL.The players are bigger and stronger. It took me a while to adjust." But it didn't take long for Mattias to prove himself. His coaches already think he's one of the Canucks best defensemen. He even got a chance to play for Team Sweden at the Nagano Winter Olympics. Although he enjoys living in British Columbia, Mattias sometimes gets homesick. "My family lives halfway around the world.I miss them. But I'm living my dream, and I know they are proud of me." (Mattias definitely has the ambition to become a legendary defenseman in the NHL no matter what odds life throws at him!)

  • Did you know...

...that Mattias was eligible for the '94 NHL Entry Draft by only 6 days?

(It seems to me that he was destined to play in the NHL)
...that Mattias is the captain of "The Canucks Fan Club" for kids that is sponsored by Shoppers Drug Mart and Coca Cola in Vancouver?

(That just goes to show you his continued dedication to kids...How admirable!)
...that Mattias was voted 2nd for the Calder Trophy?

(I'm still furious that he was thwarted by Sergie Samosov for the Calder Trophy! I think Mattias deserved this award...I smell a conspiracy among the voters!)
...that Mattias was one of the hockey players used in creating the NHL '99 video game by EA Sports?

    (Markus Naslund also participated.)
...that Ohlund was featured on a Cool Shots episode on April 17, 1999? He was on the segment called "Moriarity Minute."
(Luckily, I was able to tape that espisode. Seeing that espisode just made my day, and to think if I hadn't turned the T.V. on at the right time, I would have completely missed seeing my Matty. What Luck! He looks even better in his street clothes. Ohlund looked soooooo sexy in his green sweater and his black glasses! Not only that, he has this low, sexy voice that just makes you melt. (Of course that's just my opinion.)
Before this cool shots episode, I'd never seen or heard him on T.V. doing interview. I'm so happy I was able to "preserve" the interview on tape. For those Mattias Ohlund fans, who missed it, Ohlund was, in essence, describing the major differences between European hockey players--like himself--and North American hockey players. He observed that European players are far more superior when it comes skating and puck handling skills, while North American players play a more physical game because of the bigger ice rink...)
