-Wilbert Brooks-
Wilbert A. Brooks, Doniphan, died unexpectedly at his home at 8 a.m. Sunday, September 19. He was a yard supervisor for Kerr-McGee Forest Products at Doniphan Tie Yard.
The son of the late Wesley and Retta Brooks, he was born January 14, 1920 and lived his entire lifetime in Ripley County. Mr. Brooks was a member of the West Doniphan General Baptist Church. On December 22, 1941, he was married to Opal Lee Lay of Winona.
Children of that marriage include two daughters, Mrs. Linda Sue Murphey, St. Louis; and Mrs. Betty Day, Doniphan; a son, Don Brooks, Doniphan, four grandchildren, Steven and Tanya Day, and Kevin and Kerry Murphey, who survive.
On July 16, 1969, he was married to Erma Camden Maher in Doniphan. She survives, as do a daughter, Joetta Brooks, of the home, a step-son, James Hampton, Piedmont; and two grandchildren Kelly and Scott Hampton.
Also surviving are four sisters, Vergie Ward, Dorothy Brooks, Bonnie Carney all of St. Louis; and Ina Lay, Lemay; four brothers, Othel Brooks, Corning, Ark., Alfred Brooks, and Carl Brooks, both of Doniphan; and Marvin Brooks, Granite City, Ill.
Preceding him in death were four brothers, Elvis Brooks, Ivis Brooks, Luin Brooks and Orville Brooks.
Services were held Tuesday, September 21, at 3:00 p.m. at Edwards Chapel with Rev. Harold Allbrittion and Rev. Jerry Crowley, officiating. Interment was in Macedonia Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
