Katie Couric
Co-host of Today
Katie Couric has been a co-host of Today since April 5, 1991. She joined the program in June 1990 as its first national correspondent and then served as substitute co-host from February 1991 until becoming permanent co-host. She is also a contributing host for Dateline NBC.
Couric graduated with honours from the University of Virginia. She lives in New York with her two daughters, Elinor Tully Monahan and Caroline Couric Monahan. Couric, whose husband died of cancer in 1998, says a major reason she's staying at NBC is that her schedule allows her to spend much of the day with her two daughters, even though the early mornings can be rough.
"It's hard to get up every morning for 10 years," she tells AP, "but if you love your work, once you wipe the sleep from your eyes and get in the shower, it just becomes another day."
Katie has also hosted The Tonight Show (usually hosted by Jay Leno). On the show (which was extremely cool, even if I do say so myself), Katie got to interview the wacky Mike Myers (“Ants don’t like cucumbers. Termites don’t like cinnamon. In fact most of your chitinous exoskeleton pests, don’t like condiments of any sort.”), the evil dude from American Idol, got sung to by Robbie Williams, and got a surprise visit from her good friend Dr. Phil. She blew the audience away with her hysterical jokes (with the help of the writers, and some help from her daughters – “What did the snail say when he climbed onto the tortoises back? … Whee!!!”) And she got a shot at being Paula Abdul while playing American Idol, which ended up with Kelly Rowland singing one of her songs.
Everyone who watches Katie on NBC Today falls in love with her, and idolises her. So if you want to see Katie in action, watch NBC Today on channel seven, Tuesday to Saturday mornings, from 4am to 6am (check your TV guide since times sometimes vary).
