This is my favourite of the direct-to-video sequels. I really do like this one. The songs weren't up to 'original movie' standard but no one would expect them to be, and they were catchy. Pretty much every original character (with the notable exception of Ariel's 6 sisters, who only had a cameo in the first scene) returned - even Max! - and the new ones were funny and likable ... yeah, I admit it, I loved Undertow! Melody was intelligent, funny and brave, a fitting daughter for one of the greatest Disney characters ever. My favourite scene with Melody? Her imitating Sebastian, of course! "Stop dat." There weren't major changes to anyone's character, which is also a definite plus. Flounder was still loyal and cute, Sebastian was still his babbling, grouchy self, Scuttle ws the same and even Eric, who was the most likely to be 'tampered with', remained true to the original - caring, adventurous and heroic. The villain, who reminded me strangely of a cross between Cruella de Vil and of course Ursula, was really a good one - better than I expected. And of course the voice (that of Pat Carroll, Ursula from the original Little Mermaid ) was great. I thought Ariel could have looked a little older, but I can understand Disney not wishing to change the appearance of one of their most major characters. All in all, Return to the Sea is an above-average film that no Little Mermaid fan should miss.
