In the comedy Happy, Texas, Illeana Douglas plays a kindergarten teacher whose life is turned upside-down when a pair of convicts roll into the sleepy town.
"The original concept was to have her wear tweed suits and horn-rimmed glasses. When she gets seduced, she would whip off her glasses and let her hair down. It was so terribly cliched," says Douglas.
"My mother was a school teacher and a Simplicity Patterns model. She wore the outfits to school and kept them in a huge closet.
"I rummaged through the closet and created my own outfits from her old teaching and modelling outfits. "When I looked in the mirror, it was pretty scary. This is exactly how I remember my mom from the 1970s."
