Miss Julie ****

DIR: Mike Figgis CAST: Peter Mullan, Saffron Burrows, Maria Doyle Kennedy

Along with "Timecode", September has been quite a month for Mr Red Mullet. Here he brings Strindberg's play to the screen in one of the best adaptations of a play in a long, long time.

Set on a midsummer night, it deals with the tension between Burrows' title character and Mullan's footman, and is a brilliant and cutting take on the relationship between the upper and lower classes and males and females.

The thrilling camerawork shows that a play adaptation doesn't have to be about talking heads, and the two leads give a couple of this year's best performances.
