Amy Jo Johnson was born in the Cape Cod area. She started gymnastics at age 7. She performed locally, and internationally until her sophomore year. At age 16, she was participating in the Miss Teen Massachucetts. She also did some training at the Orleans Academy Playhouse in high school. She attended Dennis Yearmouth regional High School. At age 19, she moved to New York to pursue her career in acting. She trained at the Lee Stratsberg Theatre Institute and the Orleans Academy Playhouse. She moved to L.A. and hated it, so she went back to New York. She then later returned to L.A., and after a few weeks, she got the part of Kimberly in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.

Amy Jo likes to act, sing, and paint. At first she had trouble deciding which to do first. But she soon fell in love with acting. She is the lead singer/guitarist in her band, Valhalla. She sings, plays guitar, and writes the songs. They perform at night clubs and coffee shops all over town.

In her free time, she reads plays, paints, practices gymnastics, spends time with her friends and her adorable one-year-old American Bulldog named Lucy. In previous interviews she said she preferred the color purple but now she has is leaning towards yellows and greens. Her favorite author is John Irving. Some of her favorite singing groups are the Beatles, Tori Amos, Grateful Dead and Kate Bush. She likes almost all kinds of music except rap. But she says there are even a few exceptions to that. She feels that if she were any kind of insect it would be a butterfly, if she were an animal she would be a squirrel. Her favorite type of pet is a dog. Amy admits that Lucy reinforces this preference. Her favorite video game is Tetris. She has a butterfly tattooed on her left ankle as a sign of freedom. Her mom suggested this to her. Her hero is now Holly Hunter. The biggest influences in her life have been her mom, God, and her sister Julie Cleary. Julie lives in the Boston area. Amy also has a brother named Greig who lives in the Cape Cod area. Amy's Dad also lives in the Cape Cod area. Amy's father's name is Greig as well. Amy Jo also wants it known that she has never, nor will she ever, pose nude.
